90 Accomplishments of Pres. Obama Which the Media Fails to Report On!
|
"Professor Watson writes Hi friends, I am always being asked to grade Obama's presidency. In place of offering him a grade, I put together a list of his accomplishments thus far. I think you would agree that it is very impressive. His first six months have been even more active than FDRs or LBJs the two standards for such assessments. Yet, there is little media attention given to much of what he has done. Of late, the media is focusing almost exclusively on Obama's critics, without holding them responsible for the uncivil, unconstructive tone of their disagreements or without holding the previous administration responsible for getting us in such a deep hole. The misinformation and venom that now passes for political reporting and civic debate is beyond description. As such, there is a need to set the record straight. What most impresses me is the fact that Obama has accomplished so much not from a heavy-handed or top-down approach but from a style that has institutionalized efforts to reach across the aisle, encourage vigorous debate, and utilize town halls and panels of experts in the policy-making process. Beyond the accomplishments, the process is good for democracy and our democratic processes have been battered and bruised in recent years. Let me know if I missed anything in the list (surely I did). Robert 1. Ordered all federal agencies to undertake a study and make recommendations for ways to cut spending 2. Ordered a review of all federal operations to identify and cut wasteful spending and practices 3. Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women 4. Beginning the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq 5. Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB 6. Ended media blackout on war casualties; reporting full information 7. Immediate and efficient response to the floods in North Dakota and other natural disasters 46. Closed offshore tax safe havens 47. Negotiated deal with Swiss banks to permit US government to gain access to records of tax evaders and criminals 48. Ended the previous policy of offering tax benefits to corporations who outsource American jobs; the new policy is to promote in-sourcing to bring jobs back 49. Items 8-11 are either flat out false or such transparent window dressing that they are little more than meaningless gestures... if that.
Item #8 in particular is simply untrue. The Obama administration, if anything, is even worse than the Bush administration regarding FOIA despite the President's pledge on his first day in office that transparency and the rule of law would be "the hallmark of my administration."

Like the four I quoted, most of the "accomplishments" in this silly list were also accomplished by George W. Bush.

I figure if you are going to sophomorically hang out on this blog, just waiting to pounce on every kind word about Obama, you should be treated as the impulsive children you are.
You guys remind me of a couple 3rd grade bullies who think they are picking on 2nd graders.

Great list, Angellight. Thanks. I think I might have to question #8-11 as well. I don't see much transparency, and I have to believe the lobbyists know the secret passageways to the inside of the White House.
But otherwise, it's pretty impressive. Your professor says he's done more than FDR in his first months, but if you look at FDR's record regarding necessary Depression-era social programs, the man was a dynamo compared to Obama.

And another nit-pick. I'm pretty sure Obama didn't build the swing set with his own two hands. I remember him being pretty impressed at how fast it went up. I'm not sure he even ordered it.

You have to put these things in perspective. Many of the "accomplishments" are nothing more than executive orders and while laudable are not exactly difficult to achieve and would more than likely have been done by any Democrat in the White House. The President signs thousands upon thousands of these and it is simply a matter of his own discretion. One such executive order he could sign but has ducked responsibility for is one repealing "Don't Ask Don't Tell" in the military.
Here are a few more questionable items on the list of "accomplishments".
21. The prison at Guantanamo Bay is being phased out
That’s the promise but not an accomplishment as there is, as of this date, no actual plan to keep the promise, only recently has the idea of using a prison in Illinois surfaced. This one has quite a way to go before becoming a reality and thus, an accomplishment.
22. US Auto industry rescue plan
Well, there’s been a bailout and a takeover but no actual plan is in place other than to have the government monitor getting GM and Chrysler back on their feet.
23. Housing rescue plan
This is a cruel joke and nothing to be touting as an accomplishment by Obama. Foreclosures have not slowed at all from this time last year. 10,000 homeowners are losing their homes DAILY!!!!!! What little by way of plans the administration has offered are highly bureaucratic, poorly administered and reaching very few people. The Obama administration has put all it’s eggs on housing in the basket of the Wall Street bankers who are not loaning the money we’ve given them with no strings attached.
25. The public can meet with federal housing insurers to refinance (the new plan can be completed in one day) a mortgage if they are having trouble paying
This is not an accomplishment at all but another cruel joke. Few people have benefited from this too little, too late plan designed to help only a very small percentage of homeowners.
26. US financial and banking rescue plan
This is called an accomplishment? It is a debacle! Obama and his administration should be ashamed for this poorly thought out continuation of the disastrous Bush/Paulson giveaway to the people most responsible for the economic collapse: the big banks and bankers like Goldman Sachs.
27. The secret detention facilities in Eastern Europe and elsewhere are being closed
Except for Bagram where all the same illegal activities that took place at Gitmo are occurring under Obama except for the waterboarding. People are being indefinitely detained with no charges and no evidence. Those lucky enough to finally be released are reporting abuse now just as before.
28. Ended the previous policy; the US now has a no torture policy and is in compliance with the Geneva Convention standards
One hopes this is true, but this is unclear with respect to the US being in compliance with the Geneva Conventions. They say we have a no torture policy but refuse to call any of the torture techniques used under Bush torture (except waterboarding). The ongoing defense of the Obama administration of both the architects and implementers of the Bush torture policy casts doubt on the veracity of this claim.
49. Ended the previous practice of protecting credit card companies; in place of it are new consumer protections from credit card industry's predatory practices
Another classic Washington bait and switch bill and an accomplishment in name only. The legislation hasn’t even taken effect yet so that most of the reforms included will have little impact on the public since many bad practices are grandfathered so that if the credit card issuers offer an opt out for current cardholders they can jack up the rates and keep the rotten terms which means, as a practical matter, the only real choice the consumer has is to cancel the card and not be able to get another one or to accept the unfair and outrageous charges and terms offered now. This is particularly true regarding usurious interest rates. They are jacking up the rates right now for existing cardholders even if when they got the card the rate was much lower. This bill may be listed as an accomplishment for Obama but was really just another accomplishment of the banks that issue the credit cards.
80. Changed the failing/status quo military command in Afghanistan
How is this an accomplishment? Changing the commander has done little to change anything in Afghanistan.
81. Deployed additional troops to Afghanistan
Why would escalating the unwinnable conflict in Afghanistan be a good thing that one would tout as an accomplishment? It’s a disastrous move.
82. New Afghan War policy that limits aerial bombing and prioritizes aid, development of infrastructure, diplomacy, and good government practices by Afghans
This “policy” has not prevented scores of deaths of innocent men, women and children as a result of drone and other air attacks. It is not an accomplishment.

There is a need to set the record straight. What most impresses us the most is the fact that Obama has used nationwide auto transport to have his cars transported. He has also accomplished so much not from a heavy-handed or top-down approach but from a style that has efforts to reach across the aisle, encourage vigorous debate, and utilize town halls and panels of experts in the policy-making process. The process is good for democracy and our democratic processes have been battered and bruised in the recent years.
