Would an automatic registration prevent call-ups for jury duty as one commentor suggests? (There is something preposterous about the way people avoid jury duty. If we can't manage that civic act, how are we going to pull together for the things to come?)

Indeed, it is Ms. Angelou's velvet voice that electrifies her written word. Her cadence, rhythm, and tone vivify anything she speaks. She could read the classifieds and make them sound magnificent.
She may not pen Shakespearean sonnets, but I wouldn't knock her artistry in any way; she lives a poem and brings an audience along for the ride. It's an absolute wonder to hear her deliver the goods.
I've heard that Dylan Thomas could move listeners in much the same way. Not bad company.

Nice to read these rational thoughts after a.m. conversations with my very wealthy employer. He is infuriated with the changes Obama will bring. He claims his taxes will go up because he's being forced to "spread his wealth" to poor people and "others" who can't manage life or work hard. He claims the government is forcing his hard earned dollars into a charity program.
Clearly, my attempt to suggest that the health of an entire organism is required for any of it's parts to maintain viability, were ill spent on angry, deaf ears. He says it doesn't matter to him personally because he'll be dead before any "good" can be realized in his own coffers.
Lovely perspective.
It would make me laugh if I didn't realize he's not the lone ranger. However, how does one influence such illogical perspectives? I'm clueless.
As long as the horizons are limited and low, she's a dandy siren for her equally savvy brethren.

My night was spent between telephones, computers, and televisions. First calls to/from my beautiful daughters who have wind in their sails like never before.
The most emotional chats were between my sister and myself. We remember different days when there were still signs on drinking water fountains that said "white only," and certain people weren't served at lunch counters. Our high school made the evening news because of the race riots there; particularly when the library was burnt down.
We cried quite a bit, Sis and I.
Superficial apparitions often don't mean much but the image of a black family in our White House is so stunningly extraordinary 40 or 50 years beyond the times I recall, there are no words that can properly articulate the magnitude of it.
It goes so far beyond the symbolic aspect, as well. Barrack Obama is an extraordinary human being; capable, brilliant, thoughtful, wise. He is the absolute antithesis of the moral bankruptcy of the mean spirited, small minded louts who have drained our treasury and wasted our young soldiers and innocent lives.
I'll be shedding tears off and on right through 1/20/09; no doubt about it.
I'm always proud to be an American because of the remarkable documents that bind us, but rarely proud of the government that runs the show.
Now, I'm proud of the whole shebang...for at least a nice little stretch.
Grace to President Obama and the United States of America.

It would be nice if Obama has it in the bag before the Daily Show/Colbert Report concludes. See how far I've moved toward the outer loops? I cannot believe this day is real. I'm so tired, but I can't imagine going to sleep later, either.
It's a weird I can handle.

I am so glad to have a place at TPM to watch this ship come in.
This is history in the making, too, and I often forget that. The page has long since turned from the hackneyed robber baron media outlets to the new wave cresting here and at a few other notable places.
A grateful nod to you, Josh and crew. And another to all of the bright minds who have shared their knowledge, wisdom, and thoughts.
It's an amazing day that I appreciate beyond expression.
