10 Things Americans should know about Iran
Someone has taken the big war drums out of storage. They continually play and pound out the same beat. It is a rhythm of noises--a cacophony if you will-- which are familiar to anyone who paid attention to the prior eight years in this country. The loudness is bellicose. It hurts the ear and a sense of decency because it is foul. We, as a country, were lied to and told that Iraq had mobile biological weapons. We were told that once the smoke cleared---we were warned about a mushroom cloud during the run up to the war-- we would find a stash of weapons.
When the smoked cleared what we found is our government printing billions of--if not trillions of-- greenbacks to pay for the war and to pay off the people who had every right to be mad as hell with our government for destroying their country. Dear Iraqis, please forgive the stupidity of our government. Our government had no problem funding an illegal war but it is hard pressed to find money to pay for the care of its citizens. Maybe the war was ultimately waged against us? Look at what we have to show for it: Nada!
Dear Iraqis, a fairly large number of Americans are mad as hell with our government too for lying and trying to make the war against you palatable. It left a bad taste in our mouth too.
Dear reader, Mr. Cole has given us ten reasons why we shouldn't even be thinking about a war with Iran. Mr. Cole really doesn't have give us ten reason because it seems like we can't afford health care.

1849 and Old Grouch:
I'm sorry to intrude, on this thought, which has value.
But please, your moral compass is needed on Jan Tessier's blog about Polanski and child rape. I trust both of you.

I have considerable respect for Juan Cole, but here, he has understated the long term threat from Iran or the evidence that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons capability. While I agree that Iranian talk is more bellicose than its actions, it remains a nation oppressively governed by hard line ideologically inflexible theocrats. It would be unlikely to engage in first use of nuclear weapons, but entirely likely to become embroiled in regional conflicts where its ability to project a nuclear threat would permit it to impose its ambitions on others. Furthermore, acaquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran would encourage a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, and would make a mockery of attempts anywhere for international pressure to hinder the nuclear ambitions of other states - a very unfortunate step in the wrong direction.
I believe we can dismiss as fantasy the notion that Iran only seeks nuclear techonology for peaceful purposes related to energy. Iran is almost the last nation on earth that needs nuclear power, given its oil reserves, its incessant lying about its program to date, and the obstacles it must overcome to develop a nuclear-supported economy.
There is certainly no excuse to push for a military response to Iran's nuclear quest, but there's no evidence I'm aware of that such a response is being contemplated in the U.S., or would be sanctioned by us if launched elsewhere. There has been some saber rattling by Israel, but again with little evidence that the Israeli government is seriously contemplating an attack on Iran. More likely, Israel is trying to pressure the U.S. to put economic pressure on Iran with the expectation that we will be more likely to do that if we are worried that Israel would attack Iran unless we act.

There is no fantasy in the fact that we knocked off the Iraqi government and it played right into the hand and strengthened the Iranian government. For every military action there is an re-action. We get pulled deeper into the muck. We have tunnel vision.
If we can contemplate endless wars we certainly can contemplate health care.
