This Just In: 7 Palin aides to testify in abuse-of-power probe

This story appeared on the AP wire at about 8:53 pm eastern. Here is an excerpt:

Seven aides to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have reversed course and agreed to testify in an investigation into whether the Republican vice presidential nominee abused her powers by firing a commissioner who refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law.

One can only wonder what the implications are.

Per Anchorage Daily News: Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg announced today that seven state employees will now honor subpoenas to testify in the legislative investigation of the Troopergate affair.

Colberg is quoted as saying it's due to judge's ruling, but MOST INTERESTING is there is no mention of upcoming appellate court hearing (last reported to be on Wednesday).

Of course, odds of getting subpoenas served and hearings scheduled before then are slim. And, the final report is to be published tomorrow.

And there is a petition circulating to recall Colberg, 'Palin's' personal pick for Alaska Attorney General. (I'm signing it!)

Waiting to hear McCain's camp, who is paying for attorneys and appellate court costs, spin on this latest development.

What about RECALL of Palin? Is that still NOT being done!?

How did Talis Colberg become AG of Alaska? He looks like an out-of-work frat boy. What the hell is going on up in Alaska?

avatar

He was appointed by Palin.

And he had more to worry about than recall: it is a CRIMINAL offense to "induce" a person to ignore a subpoena. He was in effect advising those subpoened to IGNORE the subpoenas.

Perhaps this about-face represents Governor Palin's tacit acknowledgment that she will be coming back to Alaska?

My guess is: wow, another delay tactic. The independent investigator's report is scheduled to come out Friday, and an Alaskan judge's ruling on the timeline last Thursday refused the Republican request to push it off. Interviewing 7 new key witnesses will take time, but to issue the report without interviewing them would look foolish, render the incomplete report politically 'defensible' by the McCain camp as 'not capturing the whole story', and give credence to the bogus "partisan investigation" charges.

I bet the 7 witnesses will have really tight schedules and have a hard time finding a good time to make themselves available prior to Nov. 4.

I hate crap like this. It's just so obviously a defensive chess move trying to be passed off as 'doing the right thing'. Why is this faulty spin logic still possible? grrr...

"I bet the 7 witnesses will have really tight schedules and have a hard time finding a good time to make themselves available prior to Nov. 4."

Do you know the meaning of SUBOPOENA? One COMPLIES with it in accordance with the issuing body's terms, not at one's own convenience. The person subpoenaed's "schedule" is suspended as concerns that of the issuing body.

Right, sub poena, from Latin, means under punishment; if you don't show you get punished.

Hey JNagarya and Sotadeoros--
Do you know the meaning of SUBOPOENA?

Yep. Though I am thrilled with the vote of confidence expressed in the question.

One COMPLIES with it in accordance with the issuing body's terms, not at one's own convenience. The person subpoenaed's "schedule" is suspended as concerns that of the issuing body.

Cause that's just what happened last time.

Seriously, guys, do you really believe that these 7 witnesses are now super excited to cooperate with this investigation? That they're not going to hide behind a 'strong willingness to cooperate, but gosh, darn it, i wish it weren't so, but i've got jury duty/dad in the hospital/hockey playoffs that day' posture?

They've got nothing to lose.
