"To me, that is the extreme position. Not, not my position of just, um, wanting that culture of life to be respected and not wanting government to sanction the idea of, um, of ending life."

According to this page from the University of Alaska (http://justice.uaa.alaska.edu/death/alaska.html), the state hasn't had the death penalty since 1957. Last serious effort by the state legislature to change that was 1998. Doesn't look like the page has been updated in a while so there may be something newer out there.
According to a blog site (http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/8/30/142329/567), Palin responded to a question from the Anchorage Daily News this way while running for Gov in 2006:
