Racist Newspaper Attack on Obama by Virginia Republican
Bobby May is the McCain campaign chair in Buchanan County, Virginia and correspondence secretary of the Buchanan County Republican Party. Mr. May recently published a newspaper column containing an overtly racist attack against Barack Obama. Appearing in a local paper called The Voice,
May's column contained a number of inflammatory charges against Obama,
including the following on Obama's plans for America if elected:
"FREEDOM
OF RELIGION: Mandatory Black Liberation Theology classes taught in all
churches - raise taxes to pay for this mandate. Put Rev. Jeremiah
Wright in charge...."
"DRUG CRISIS: Raise taxes to pay for free drugs for Obama’s inner-city political base...."
"2ND
AMENDMENT: Under Obama will only apply to gang-bangers, illegal aliens,
Islamo-Fascist terrorists, and Senator Jim Webb’s aide...."
"FOREIGN
RELATIONS: Appoint Rev. Al Sharpton as Secretary of State, Jesse
Jackson as UN Representative, and let Bill Clinton handle all other
"foreign relations" ... As long as Hillary doesn't find out...!"
"THE
WHITE HOUSE: Hire rapper Ludacris to “paint it black.” Taxes to be
increased to buy enough paint for the job plus spray-paint for
graffiti...."
"THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES: Raise taxes to send $845
billion, most of it to Africa so the Obama family there can skim off
enough for them to free their goats and live the American Dream...."
"NATIONAL ANTHEM: Change to the "Black National Anthem" by James Weldon Johnson...."
"US
CURRENCY: Update photos to reflect US diversity; include pictures of
"great Americans" such as Oprah Winfrey, Ludacris, Sheila Jackson-Lee,
Paris Hilton, and Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson (Obama's new
Secretary of the Treasury - 50 Cent refused position after learning
that he would lose his crazy check if he accepted the nomination)...."
"US
FLAG: Replace 50 stars with a star and crescent logo; red stripes
changed to green to represent Obama’s tree-hugging radical
environmentalism and his lack of experience. Flag lapel pins, having
become a substitute for “real patriotism,” will henceforth be
banned...."
At the end of his column May challenged Obama to meet him on "County Talk,"
a Friday morning talk show on radio station WMJD 100.7 in Grundy VA. It
seems Mr. May is quite the local mover and shaker in Buchanan County
Republican circles: In addition to his work with The Voice and WMJD, he has also appeared in the Virginia Mountaineer with other local Republican leaders.
Complaints and expressions of disgust at Mr. May's comments can and should be directed to the following:

This story has already attracted the attention of the Los Angeles Times and blogs such as the Daily Kos,
and with lots of further attention could become a major embarrassment
to the GOP and the McCain campaign. The GOP and the McCain campaign
should be pressed to acknowledge Mr. May's statements, to condemn and
apologize for them, and to remove Mr. May from any official party or
campaign role.

Thanks for the link, Mark.
This reminds me of so much similar stuff put out by very ignorant people in the South and elsewhere in years gone by. That guy they were mourning a few months back did similar things in his youth in Virginia: opposition candidate dancing with black women, etc.
Nothing changes I guess. Ignorant families raise ignorant children who become ignorant parents. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Puts a knot in my gut, but what can one do. Many folks feared this campaign for this reason, they knew it would waken that beast of ignorant feelings that puts out such columns. Too bad the party of Lincoln and T Roosevelt has attracted so many like this.

What can one do!? One can take it as an OPPORTUNITY to SPEAK PUBLICLY ABOUT THE RACISM.
It's about time that were done -- that we had the "dialouge on race" this country desperately needs.

Can you people in Virginia SHAME retiring Senator John Warner in coming out publicly and endorsing Obama / Biden or is he also a racist? No one with any soul or any conscience or any intelligence could possibly continue to support McCain / Palin. I live in a very blue state, but those of you in red states should do the same...try to put the pressure on repug Senators and Reps to publicly endorse Obama / Biden. I would think their continuing support of the repub ticket would be political suicide.

John Warner is not a racist. He has endorsed Democrats in the past. As far as I know, he has not endorsed McCain in this race.
His endorsement of Obama, in the current neck-and-neck VA race, might well decide the whole shebang.

They are trying there hardest to change the subject as quickly as they can. You think the Mc camp doesn't know about this? PUHHHHHHHLEAZE, they want nothing more than to talk about race.

Then let's talk about race -- with greater enthusiasm, and in opposition to them, than McPalin can handle.

This has the smell of race baiting and it strikes me that the editors of the newspaper that printed it are complicent.
The McCain camp hasn't been able to rile Obama and "demonstrate" his poor character. Perhaps some of McCain's surrogates believe they can stir up some good old fashion rioting with this kind of incendiary stuff and then blame it on Obama. If they can't make stuff about Obama's character stick, maybe they can get at the character of Obama supporters.
The goal here is to whip up something to really fear.

"The goal here is to whip up something to really fear."
Racism is like a thread. Pull the thread and the garment unravels exposing that which is under the garment.
The counter goal is to help the racism expose itself for what it actually is: fear of one's own (dark) shadow.

I have e mailed this out and asking all to contact the McCain and other entities noted in post. I believe we need to address this quickly and vehemently (albiet respectfully) immediately.
Please, send this out to all including other MSM media and make RNC and McCain denounce this ugliness.

Respectfully!? Screw that: one doesn't deal with racism respectfully; therefore one doesn't deal with RACISTS respectfully.
There is nothing in either TO respect!

Get ready for more of it. I imagine this kind of trash will be coming nonstop until Nov. 5. Once this election is over, I hope never to see or hear from another republican.

ohn Warner is not a racist. He has endorsed Democrats in the past. As far as I know, he has not endorsed McCain in this race.
Get real. Just the other day a reporter forwarded me something sent by the McCain communications staffer in Virginia, announcing a press conference call in which Warner was going to explain "why Obama and Biden are wrong for Virginia".
He may or may not be a racist, but he's a Republican hack through and through. He's still being given undue credit for not having endorsed Oliver North for Senate fourteen years ago.
Buchanan County has next to no people in it. It's nowhere, Virginia, and believe me, I know: I live in next to nowhere, Rockbridge County. The McCain campaign will almost certainly disclaim any hand in this, but they've sent the signal through their mainstream press interviews in the last few days that it's fine to tear down Obama with whatever smears come to hand.
The Dem task in western Virginia is to keep the margin reasonable; there are too many stone racists here to expect an African-American candidate to win (especially when no white Democrats have won in years and years). The point of sleazy garbage like May's column is to make it uncomfortable for white voters who might have been considering Obama to admit publicly to doing so.

That is moronic, he is a REPUBLICAN. You can't fault him for endorsing other Republicans. It's a completely moronic premise.

for the record, here is the email I sent. I imagine it will have no appreciable effect, but it helped cleanse my soul a bit
**
Dear Sir or Madam:
At the risk of stating the obvious, the recent column by Mr. Bobby May is a complete an utter disgrace to all Americans. There can be only two possible explanations for his comments
1. He meant every word
2. He thought it was interesting, perhaps humorous, piece of satire.
In either event, he is clearly a pathetic, intellectually bankrupt, and spiritually vacuous individual who should serve no part in a political campaign. It is no wonder with Republicans such as Mr. May, that the GOP faces a shrinking electoral map and will over the next several election cycles find themselves on the wrong side of history.
One last note:
As Senator McCain's campaign has centered on his honorable and noble service as pilot in the Vietnam conflict, perhaps Mr. May should explain his comments in light of the number of African-Americans who also served their country honorable and whose only memory is is engraved on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. This is assuming that either Sen. McCain or Mr. May has a single shred of decency in their souls.
And again, at the risk of stating the obvious: we both know the answer to that.

My Email:
First let me say that as a DIRECT descendant of Dred Scott and as a Helicopter Pilot in the US ARMY, I am really disgusted to read such trash and just down right racist comments coming from a so-called professional! Comments like this make it really difficult to believe in the Republican Party. Yes, we know that this is really just one rotten and destroyed seed among many; but this incident isn't isolated. Why is it that whenever there is word of some sort of voter suppression that it just about ALWAYS involve a Republican? Why is it when someone makes a not so positive comment about Palin or McCain, they are all of a sudden liberal and left wing? Yet it's considered truth and good reporting when it's done by a Right Wing reporter or talk show host?
Your candidate is attempting to run on this new found "change" platform and the so called Maverick image. Well let me tell you, comments and incidents like this undermine his campaign more than ANY of his actions alone. This is exactly the change that America wants and needs. A change for attitudes of hatred and malice; a change from the ignorance that continues to grow like a fungus in the wild; a change where people are just people and not always associated with the color of their skin. But see, this is the exact type of change that you are afraid of. You cringe when you see interracial couples walking the street... praying silently to yourself that you're glad that it isn't your daughter. Lo and behold, in many instances it IS your daughter... you just don't know it! But this email isn't meant to bring insult to your daughters... no more than having people like you as their father brings.
Now my prayer is that the good Republicans stand up as MEN and WOMEN as ONE COUNTRY UNDIVIDED and denounce not only his words but also this man!! Because it is words like this that continually DIVIDE our country.

It took about two minutes to compose an e-mail of protest and cut and paste it into an e-mail to each address listed.
These two bounced:

bcrp@naxs.net
I would encourage each of you to do the same and to ask everybody in your addressbook to do the same.
This is the text that I used:

On August 17, I wrote a post entitled "It IS about race, and we'd better talk about it."
I'll spare you all but the most salient points, in light of what still is occurring—and arguably escalating:
I got a little flak for posting this, being told discussing racism plays into the Republicans' desire to link Obama with Wright, Farrakhan, etc. I didn't agree then and I sure as heck don't agree now.
From the "uppity" implications to the outright slurs, this is a spade that needs to be called a spade (irony angrily and deliberately intended).

Agreed absolutely.
I've been a civil rights activist for 50 years. From experience it is actually simple: one deals directly with the racsim, or one compromises with and placates and ultimately justifies it.
Being silent about it allows the haters free speech without opposition. Being "respectful" of the disreputable is being complicit in and enabling of the disreputable.
The racists want to raise the issue of race? Great! -- let's get all their "reasonings" onto the table, in broad daylight, and critically evalaute them together. Or even only in thier faces. Expose the "turns to ash when hit by sunlight" racism for what it is: hogwash based ultimately in fear of one's own (dark) shadow.

The Republican ticket is so bankrupt of ideas, I think they will hang themselves. I think this may be an election where H.L. Mencken'squote: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.", may be the exception rather than the rule.

If working class and middle class whites choose to buy into this propaganda sleaze then they deserve the government they get. I hope they won't turn around and whine about their economic plight. Republicans, like Bobby May, are good at exploiting white fears while they are making off with fat bank accounts, like bandits, even as the middle class continues to slide into poverty. It really does not matter whether a person is black, white, brown or whatever. If a person can't feed his family, hating on another a person, of a different race/color, will not put food on the table, or help save enough money to send the kids to college. Choosing a white candidate, who doesn't even know how many houses he and his wife own, may be psychologically gratifying, but it would not guarantee food on the table, or fighting off an unfair foreclosure. I am really hoping that this will be the year when white working and middle class people will wake up, and resoundingly say that they will no longer buy into the Republican party fear mongering, hype and despicable lies. I am hoping that this will be the year that people of all races vote for their interests instead of the Republican manufactured fears.

As awful as these comments are, let me put in in perspective for you. I live not too far from Grundy. While most of SW Virginia is considered rural and hickish by the rest of the country. That how the rest of SW Va looks at Grundy. It makes Wasilla look like NYC in terms of progressivness, and while there are some great people from Grundy, it absolutly no surprise that something filled with this kind of bile would come from there.

I just called the editor of the paper and he defended everything said in the column. He literally told me there was not one false claim in the column and it was 100% turthful. He also stated that it was Bobby Mays' column and he could say anything he wanted. Of course, being a good Republican hack, he then stated that the entire economic meltdown was Bill Clinton's fault. Since the editor fully supports this column, it is time to see if there are any national companies advertising in the paper and put a financial hurt on his butt.
