Prompting at the debate

avatar

When Sarah Palin walked off the stage from the debate, I clearly saw a Blackberry in her hand.  Could this have been the reason she spent so much time looking down at the podium prior to her answers?  Was she being prompted by test messaging?  Did anyone else notice this?

Wow, good catch. Bush's backpack wire is so 2004.

this needs to be exposed!

In Alaska, they said she used to 'blackberry her way through all the meetings' (can't find that quote, but it was somewhere on mudflats, I think) - so maybe she was just so disinterested she was sending cutesy texts to her friends?

or yes, she was being paged.

cool trick. Gets round all the liberal bloggers with wire-blocking technology

sigh

that it should come to this....

On the other hand... if the woman did this poorly by cheating... it's just one more adjective in the list of her sins of hypocrisy. I really think she's Toast no matter what. But this should be exposed if it's true.

I'm surprised she would carry it off herself instead of having one of her handlers retrieve it for her.

If she was using one, would Biden have been able to see it from where he was standing? He's tall enough that I would think he could.

Actually, I can explain why she spent so much time looking down and was apparently distracted during the debate.

I was making a last minute check of the mic wiring at her podium when I suddenly realized the debate was starting. Rather than disrupt the debate, I decided my best move was to stay under the podium.

There I was, inches away from the knees of America's MILF.

This is not an appropriate venue for describing how I spent the next 90 minutes. That will have to await my memoirs.

Typical.

You're with one woman your whole life. You've got history. You've grown old together. You pledge your commitment. And then you just up and leave her when the first hot new thing comes along.

Like I said. Typical.

Hilary, you are now officially my favorite poster on TPM by far.

It's the pheromones, clearthinker. Keep you from thinking clearly. Mystery is, how does she do it over the web?

avatar

It's the pic.

Keeps you from thinking clearly? Well that certainly explains why you wanted Hillary Clinton over Obama. Thanks for the explanation.

She's been done wrong by yet another Bill. Kismet.

Oh, you've got to be kidding. I thought she was reading notecards. Joe was scribbling his talking points while she talked, but she never picked up a pen.

Does anyone have footage of the blackberry?

avatar

No, but there's plenty of footage of Biden holding a pen. Looks like he's right-handed.

Now we know why McCain invented the Blackberry!

I don't see it in this video, but maybe someone handed her one after it was all over? If she had one during the debate, I'd think it would have been pretty easy to see because she would have had to have left it on the podium when she stepped away. Right around the 4:00 minute mark.

Also, there are photographers directly behind the podiums (behind the glass). After viewing the video a few times, I'd say it's highly unlikely Palin could have used a Blackberry during the debate without being seen by the photographers.

I am sure that she was reading something from time to time.

If you look at some of the footage from the debate, there is what appears to be a wire loop behind her right shoulder. At first i thought it was her hair extensions, new for the debate, long enough to hide a mic. but it is an arc, not a strand. Look at the footage. It certainly looks like a wire. I didn't notice the hair/wire thing until it was pointed out to me after, but during the debate, especially early on, she kept looking down as if listening intently. Could have been reading but not from notes as she wasn't shuffling cards that I saw. The point is that her performance was so much better, though manipulative, than her previous exposures. What's scary is that it is quite imaginable that she would be encouraged to cheat -- and that people would not be astonished if she had done so. We never did find out about the Cone of Silence, either. There was discussion but no resolution and finally, it went away.

Her performance was NOT better. The reason she was able to fool many people into thinking it was better was because Ifill totally sucked and never followed up on anything. Imagine the Couric interviews with no follow-up questions from Couric. That's precisely what you saw at the debate.

She sucked. She will always suck. If they can keep her away from the press until after the election, perhaps no one will find out.

A few follow-up questions I'd like to ask her:

1). Who are a couple of your favorite writers at the Wall Street Journal?

2). Specifically, why do you read the Economist? What is your favorite thing about the Economist?

3). Do you ever read Pat Buchanan's magazine? You do? Name it.

4). You mentioned recently that you're a Federalist? Would you consider yourself paleoconservative? Why?

You forgot 5.) Your place or mine?

You, Billy, are a dirty old man!

BTW, I ran across a picture of John McCain's old Brazilian flame. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/03/mccains-brazilian-girlfri_n_131774.html

It puts him into perspective when you realize that this is the age of woman he would be married to if he hadn't robbed the very wealthy cradle!

Ifill's questions were simply terrible- and don't blame it on any pre-debate comments made by Republicans. She was also terrible in the 2004 VP debate between Cheney and Edwards. Google for those transcripts if you don't believe me.

Her questions the other night were convoluted, confusing, unnecessarily complicated, and were NOT "debate watcher friendly." She gave both candidates ample opportunities to go off the topic and did not keep them under control- something that helped Palin much more than it did Biden.

I'm a high school teacher, and my teaching methodology professor would have given me a failing grade if I had designed a lesson using the kinds of questions Ifill used.

I have watched and enjoyed Ifill in a smaller setting on the TV show she hosts, but she looks like a deer in headlights when she is on the big stage. She should never be allowed to moderate a debate on her own again.

I agree completely; they weren't even questions -- they were just topics that anyone could just blow through. Of course, when Palin said she didn't care what the moderator wanted her to do, Ifil should have said, "Then I will stop you right there and let Senator Biden give a further comment."

That would have been a lesson for Palin that she would never forget.

I watched part of the rerun this afternoon and she did use a pen cause you could see it. The podium was at such an angle that Biden couldn't see if she had a Blackberry. I didn't see them walk off, which is when I saw the Blackberry in her hand, this afternoon but I am beginning to think that Todd handed it to her so that she would have instant access to her Presidential partner when he called to tell her how "wonderful" she was. I think the fact that there were cameras behind them speaks to the fact that those manning those cameras could see if she were using a Blackberry. I didn't see a wire in her hair though either.
