McCain the Self-Proclaimed Military Expert
I know the Rolling Stone Article touched on it, and I know this is going where noone dares go - but I understand why John McCain should get our respect, thanks and be revered as a hero for his time spent in service and as a POW, but can someone please explain how being a horrendous pilot (5 crashes - undisputed that anyone without McCain's connections would've lost their wings) and a POW qualifies you as a foreign policy/military expert?
All recent evidence - whether it's his judgments in 2002-03 re Iraq War, his pronouncements regarding Iran, his judgments re Afghanistan and Pakistan, his view re diplomacy - indicates that he'd be a terrible commander in chief with little tolerance for actual constructive diplomacy.
Am I missing something?

I don't think you're missing anything. The Rolling Stone article was devastating, assuming assuming the the facts are true.
McCain used his connections to get into the Naval Academy, stay in the Naval Academy, get into flight school, staying in flight school, and to get into the War College. There's very little in his life that he's done on his own merits.
Yes, he was a POW, and should be honored for that. But so were a lot of other men. Not that I would criticize someone for what they did or said while being tortured, but some of the other POWs did not sign statements or give information as McCain did.
