CNN Does Fact Checking

avatar

Just watched CNN do a fact check, live and on air, of the charges Palin made about Obama hanging with terrorists.

CNN refuted it completely and also referred to Palin's use of the plural form, 'terrorists'. CNN said they requested from the McCain campaign information about the use of the plural form asking what other 'terrorists' they meant. CNN said the McCain campaign declined to respond.

This is my first recollection of any network doing a direct fact check about such a charge by examining the past and present excapades of Bill Ayers, who Palin has alleged is a terrorist.

If this is any indication of how the cable networks might react to the sleaze the McCain campaign is launching they might want to rethink their tactics.

Wow! The MSM is beginning to take on its patriotic duty!

That's the value of Obama keeping things mostly positive until now. He's branded McBush as the liar he is.

John King, is that you?

Yes. I saw that yesterday, actually --> Fact Check: False. It was an easy check: Palin quoted the NYT and if you read their article you'd know that Obama doesn't pal around with Ayers.

I think the Media have been very unhappy to be denied access to Palin and to have McCain avoid them of late, to boot!. They are mad and that helped them fall off the tree and start "seeing" and "calling" what has been obvious for a long time.

They are fed up and they're turning on McCain.

No, they ARE NOT "turning on" McPalin. They are simply telling the truth.

They are, in other words, simply telling the truth about the America-hating Republican candidates.

Yes. But why now? What's in it for them? Did they really just get honest all of a sudden? Mmmm...

avatar

Do we really care why CNN did an honest fact check?

The facts in this cycle are basically good for Obama and bad for McCain. I don't care what the motivation for truth-telling is, as long as it happens.

Paranoia asks about motives, then when answers aren't forthcoming, fills in the blanks.

Thus we get your questions, "Why now? What's in it for them?"

And on the other side we get, "The left-lib-rul biased media is attacking us!" -- and you play into that by encouraging THEIR paranoia. Thus they are given excuse to WHINE, WHINE, WHINE -- and to engage into sliming others.

Do you always hung negative labels on those who view things differently from you?

Plus, their 401(k)'s are in the shitter too.

The "too close to call" meme for this election is becoming increasingly difficult to uphold, if all one has to go on are the polls. The drama is gone.

I don't think MSM is acting out of anger. It's ratings. Palin the screw-up is the story now. The vice presidential debate wasn't most watched in history because folks wanted to hear about the issues. They watched to see if Palin would crash and burn.

The media always loves a train wreck, especially if there's film. And if they have to put a few pennies on the track to make things happen, so be it.

That's it exactly. The MSM is realizing that they can sell more papers by playing up the shameful, outrageous nature of McCain's campaign, than by trying to pretend that it's a close race.

CNN did....what??????

I guess it would be a good idea to give them kudos for doing so as they usually hear from me about not doing things like that.

avatar

Yeah....well you should see the crap Faux news is spouting right now, about his early community organizing career and associations. All really negative and I'm sure completely misconstrued stuff. I really hope that the only people that pay any kind of attention to Faux News is the ignorant Republican base. I hate this crap and really can't wait until the landlslide on Nov. 4th.

Why do you suppose Fox News is allowed to be so extremely partisan and not be considered an arm of the Republican party and currently a part of the McCain campaign? It's not a valid news source.

I'm hoping this campaign and Obama's popularity will shine a light on this in the minds of moderates who watch that channel. I know it's a long shot but Fox is just extreme these days.

avatar

I detest Faux so much that I actually got up and changed the channel in a breakfast area in a hotel, after checking with other patrons in the room. Why do hotels insist on having Faux "news" on their TV sets, gosh darn it?!?

McCain / Palin and republicans won't be able to escape the realities of their policies over the last two or three decades. Their chickens have come home to roost and will crap the place up for sure.

Voters won't remain apathetic over this. The market meltdown has gotten the attention of most every voter all across the country. This is making people take a harder look at what has happened and to try and ferret out the reasons. It isn't all that hard if you take the time to actually look to understand the genesis of all the mess. It will fall on republicans and bury them on 4 November. The misdirection of the McCain / Palin campaign will only make things worse for republicans. Voters will realize the tactic is just a means to obscure and to avoid having to discuss and possibly justify the republican record. Republicans know they can't have that discussion because of how thorughly they have screwed things up. The Bush and McCainmobile is screaming downhill with the brakes out. The crash at the bottom is going to be horrendous. We have to hope the collateral damage isn't too severe.

lol.

The McCain campaign sacrificed one error for another in choosing their vice presidential debate strategy last week. In hopes of trying to put a band-aid over the Sarah Palin problem and save her from making a complete fool of herself, the choose to have her continue with her Republican convention speech/Hannity interview infomercial and totally blow off Gwen Ifill and having a true debate. They went on the attack on Ifill who is pretty much unanimously agreed to be a journalist of impeccable credentials and very well liked.

Blowing off Ifill who was trying to do her job as debate moderator and help American voters get a real look at Palin made the MSM see that they and the people they try to inform were getting an honest to goodness slap in the face. And by the disrespect they saw coming out of the McCain campaign and amplified through the right-wing hate machine via Drudge, they saw a good person and fair journalist with the best intentions in mind get bludgeoned for political purposes.

She also attacked Katie Couric repeatedly in public. Katie-f-ing Today Show, lovable sweetheart whose husband died of cancer, Couric! Couric was doing her job and rose above expectations (even of the McCain campaign who like their fantasy of a Charlie Gibson "Barbara Walters-like" interview were looking forward to a fluffy Today Show type happy piece).

If the McCain campaign will not come clean and will keep Palin sequestered unless in a friendly infomercial environment or rage field right wing radio nut defender, they know that they are going to actually start doing some real work in the final month of the campaign. McCain has gotten off incredibly easily and has gotten a pass that Obama has not.

Palin and the McCain campaign showed journalists that they don't have to be the New York Times bad mouth, kick and violate. They will go low enough to beat down anyone if it serves their purpose. Attacking Couric and Ifill was the equivalent of taking a puppy and a bunny and gutting them in front of children.

They media is alright if political camps are beating up each other, but when they start going at them as McCain should know since he wrote about it in his stupid mavericky book, then they're in a lot of trouble. MSM get fact checking.

avatar

I hope the other news organizations will follow, especially those that were denied access to Palin. It's fair and reasonable for them to do their own fact checking if the candidate(s) refuse to answer questions. If the McCain/Palin campaign cries foul, then they can refute the "facts" by presenting their candidates for questioning.

avatar

This must be a threat to people like Candy Crowley and the Annenberg factcheck thing. If you cannot find five things for one candidate to cancel five things for the other-----then checking facts becomes a substantive exercise of judgement, rather than a careful marketing strategy for meaningless self-perpetuating filler.

Because---sometimes---believe it or not---one side is more irresponsible than the other when it comes to the truth of what they say.

Will anyone be surprised if they say that they have to find an equal number of wrongs that Obama has said before they can give more examples of McCain's lies?

Not really surprised.

I am glad to see that CNN shows it can have a "fact check" that does look at the substance of the charges made by Palin. The charges were false and made up by Palin and McCain. In fact, Obama was 8 years old when all these things took place. And is has been stated and proven that Obama does not have a relationship with Ayers. The charges made by Palin about Obama shows the character of Palin and McCain. The cable networks and press are afraid to confront Palin about any campaign policy or about herself. Palin hides behind the word "sexist". As a woman there has not been any "sexism" done in any way towards Palin. There is enough corruption in her time as governor 18 months)(. If I remember right now there is an investigation being done in reference to her influence of a firing of a person in her administration. She and the McCain campaign have tried to stop the investigation, but a federal judge has ruled that the investagation go fourth. This shows that both her and John McCain have no ethics and constantly lie about Obama because they are behind in the polls. I am glad that the public outside of her supporters of the far right side of the Republican party can see Palin and McCain for what they are.

The Universty of Illinois at Chicago must be a terrorist organization by thier standards.

William Charles "Bill" Ayers (born 26 December 1944)[1] is an American elementary education theorist and former leading 1960s Marxist. He is known for the violent nature of his activism in the 1960s and 1970s as well as his current work in education reform, curriculum, and instruction. In 1969 he cofounded the radical Marxist organization Weather Underground which was active during the 1960s and 1970s. He is now a professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, holding the honor of Distinguished Professor.

It would be a great day if someone in the MSM asked Palin about Troopergate (why didn't Ifill?) or, assuming they are no longer allowed questions, talked about it independently. Unless the Alaska Supreme Court is bought and paid for (possible, it's Alaska), Friday will bring some bad news for Palin.

Wouldn't you consider people who want to have Alaska secede from the United States (and take all its oil and natural gas with it) to AT LEAST be traitors? Maybe not terrorists, but traitors for sure.
