It is a fascinating exercise performed by The Whiner Yellow WASP loser, as many of his cluster of Yellow WASP losers buzzed around to watch their leader circle around in every smaller circles, until he finally disappeared entirely, up his own vocal hole.

I've been thinking a lot about that line of study, too. You see, I have family members who are full-tilt-boogie right wingers. And it bothers me that they are so willing to surrender their judgment and their freedoms to this authoritarian worldview and submit, seemingly without question, to the Republican Party's orthodoxy even though their platform is increasingly immoral and incoherent.

To set the record straight - I have never liked the Lakers or much of anyone from California. I was a 6'ers fan especially with the glorious Dr. J, and even liked Barkley elbowing around skinny guys while being selected Most Valuable Glowerer year after year. Oh shit, I did like Wilt (who was really from Philly - see?) even when he played for the Lakers, mainly because of doing grannie shots from the free throw line. So Lakoff? Takeoff. Ahhh, good to see you holding me to my principles Clearthinker. Thank you much. Now, where was I? Well, first off, I was having my Thanksgiving. You see, it's held on a different day here. But you are correct, let me push aside that pumpkin pie & proceed to the important matters discussed herein.
Oh. What's that? Why my comment was the 2nd one posted here! Thinking this post could become yet another contribution to the Race To The Bottom - accelerated by attacking people by naming them in the posts themselves - I thought I'd tap the 1st commenter on the shoulder, and ask why they were one moment saying " Billy, I couldn't agree with you more" and the next, well, her comment at the top speaks for itself.
But you're right. I should have gone further. Liam, my friend. You've said on another post that you are old, and Irish, and your style here is along the lines of the sorts of debates they have in Irish pubs. I happen to love Ireland (the name I use - a family one - should be a small giveaway), and in the post that aroused you yesterday, suggested we should share a bit of love for the Irish, and linked to a Pogues song. Which you gracefully reciprocated.
But. Here's the thing. It is the English that hound people down every hole. A bit silent, grim, and brutish. Whereas the Irish will arrange a chair artfully over your head, then help you up, brush you off, buy you a drink, and as soon as they know you're well, repeat the cycle. But there's some humour with it. And after a bit, the whole thing becomes a bit of a dance, in which we skip the chair-breaking part. At last, the last time I played hockey (yes, ice hockey) in Dublin, that as how the dance was done.
My point? You don't like Billy. He doesn't like you. At this present juncture, everyone seems to be doubly wound up because of the Election and the Crash. Not a good time, being had by any. Billy is - I believe - trying to point out that the effects of this time are making people run in a herd. (Or "hive.") Myself, I'm inclined to think people are, in fact, running about. The Republicans certainly are (and that's frightening enough), but when Obama's supporters begin, it doubles the danger. Watch the man himself, and you'll see how much he strives to be cool & calm. That's for a reason. Because he will have NO chance if both sides begin milling about.
Bottomline? Say what you will to or about me. I simply don't think it's helpful to name people in a POST. If they wish to argue in the COMMENTS, then I tend to stand back, and let them go - unless piling on seems to be taking place. That distinction is, I believe, a useful one. Within the comments themselves, I think the procedure is that one contributes or argues etc., and then, if engaged, the exchange of insults (the wittier the better) takes place. Landing on a post simply to exchange insults is probably not desirable.

I thought about posting here but given the political terrain I've staked out I didn't think my rejection of liam's post would be worth much. Liam, I think, is motivated by 2 desires. First to silence the opposition by bullying and second, a desperate desire to attain the status of the rec list.
It just pisses him off to no end that billy gets his posts up on the rec list so often and that his posts so often generate so much dialog. Not only do billy's rec'ed posts usually generate well over a hundred comments but billy is one of the few people here who can generate well over a hundred comments on a post that doesn't move up to the rec list.
Even in this miniscule little portion of the internet the green eyed monster rears its head.

As to Billy Glad's post, I thought it was provocative but hardly over the top. I happen to agree with Billy, or at least I think Billy would agree with me, that the charges of racism being bandied about in this election are unseemly and counterproductive, and I think much of such charging has been the lifeblood of what Billy refers to as the Hive. Still, I reiterate that, if folks wrote about unilaterally when you were not already part of the comment thread, then that was inappropriate.

The irony on TPM lately is we currently have a blog speaking of the "goodness of people" which immediately degenerated into name calling (and from the side who were proposing that people were inherently good).
Many of the posters here like to ascribe to a certain set of values which they simply don't practice in real life. Hence, they get upset at the viciousness of McCain/Palin, but will continue to say things like "rethugs", "repugs", or "Republicans are fascist".

Bingo! Always seemed to me that a lot of this kind of behavior is out of a desire to get back at all those conservative talk radio shows by making liberal versions of them on the internet.
What people like that don't get is that some of us were never looking for more talk radio noise/hate/food fighting but were hoping that we could find some internet forums which were looking for something different from that paradigm, that we didn't want a liberal version of talk radio hating and whipping up anger and ideological solidarity.
Who knows, they may be right that a liberal version of talk radio hate is what's needed to effect political change in this country. I happen to doubt that. But even if they are right, can't we have a few places where we don't have to play that game? Where people actually are disdainful of playing that game?
I have always basically ignored the liam types. I suggest others who want to avoid talk radio/Palin rally-type behavior do so as well. Though he/she does not fit the classic definition of internet troll, some of the modus operandi are very similar, and the "don't feed" rule is operative, I think.

P.S. I mostly don't bother to get into questioning Billy Glad's behavior because he has a real complicated way of challenging poor behavior, sometimes to good effect and sometimes to bad effect, and to do so would just get me dragged into high school type crap I'd rather just ignore. I will say this though: one of his downfalls as to being effective is that he feeds trollishness too much. Over and over, I've watched him feed, then I watched him get bummed about the results of the feeding. Don't feed, ignore, that's the solution. Since there is a pro-Obama group here that thinks they own the website, that's hard to do, since they can gang up on you and try to make a straw man out of certain people, and then those people feel they have to clarify their stance (I know that's happened to you, and it's certainly happened to Billy.) But Billy's solution of taunting such a group is a no-win in mho, it just invigorates them, just like a troll just loves snagging someone to taunt him.
Plus in a few weeks, any political rationale for "we must see Obama pom poms from all at all costs" enforcement will disappear on this site. Then, oh goodie, hives will reorganize, and we can go back to people getting labeled Republican trolls because of their position on health care or labeled AIPAC supporters or anti-Semites because of their position on Israel. :-)

Ever go back and look at comments you wrote and wish you never got started? I think what liam did was wrong, and I posted write after reading ranger's comment about "hating" Billy, but I do wish I would have just looked the other way. I have encouraged this foodfight, sharpened divisions, and have really convinced nobody of anything. Other than that, the play was great.
I was thinking, by the way, about something you wrote yesterday which is tangentially related to this thread, and it was about the Josh of old and the Josh of new (a Josh who now runs a website where a post like this becomes acceptable). I started reading him consistently in 2002. I recall his blogs about North Korea and then Iraq, and I remember how impressed I was by his non-cookiecutter approach to these issues in a time of intense partisanship. Ultimately, like most of us, I believe Josh concluded that military intervention against Iraq was not in this country's interest, but Josh didn't get there without weeks and months of intensive discussion of what all kinds of folks, including Ken Pollack with prominence, were saying. He was liberal, but he was objective, and he was truly valued.
How does he return to that now that he has this cash cow and now that he has staked out a position with respect to our next president that is defined at the core by unconditional and unqualified support?

Just words liam. I have never defended our nominee? Just yesterday, in the very thread you base this drivel of a post on, I wrote that Senator Obama's election will be a great victory for race relations in this country, although I also stated that the evils of racism in the form of unequal opportunity will remain and we must continue the fight. If that is not enough of what you consider support, then so be it; I don't work for you.
Further, as I stated, if folks wrote about you, then I also stated that that would be inappropriate. Why don't you step back from the precipice of taunts, although taunt away at me if you must, and highlight those comments which drove you to this promotion of hate in the form of a post? That would probably be a more productive way to express your displeasure. And, by the way, where I come from, the United States of America, it is the charger of wrongdoing that bears the burden of backing up his or her indictment. Show us the comments that drove you to write this; I implore you that that would be a more productive apporach.
Finally, liam, I am very well satisfied with the support in the real world that I have given to the nominee. Talk can be really cheap liam. Beyond talk, people at this website who post here are aware first-hand of the fundraiser I co-hosted that, to date, has raked in 113,000 dollars for Senator Obama's campaign. In the real world, Senator Obama's election is critical to this union lawyer, because at the threshold only Senator Obama will sign the Employee Free Choice Act and reinvigorate the labor movement in this country.
That said, I don't have to go along with what everyone else writes, even if you and your blatant thought-controlling tendencies would have me write otherwise. You have exposed yourself as never before.

I'm done Billy. I hope you understand and appreciate that I didn't do this for you. I have stuck my neck out and subjected myself to the fancy-penned but fundamentally mean assaults by liam for the integrity of this community. I do so sanctimoniously and proudly. I am satisfied with what I have done. While liam's post rises on the recommended list, I am satisfied and that liam has been left to defend himself/herself. Before my intervention, it was apparently OK for one person to actually announce that he hated you. Now, there is only silence, which suggests to me that, at least for the moment, people undestand that there is no place on this website for the hate-filled nonsense penned by liam in this particular instance. I am both sanctimonious and satisfied with my efforts this morning.
And, now, it is a beautiful day in Manhattan, and if I wish to preserve my marriage, it is time to go out and play.

Billy Glad is a Right Wing Republican. Always has been. He was playing the Limbaugh game during the primary, trying to get Hillary nominated, because they felt she would be easier to defeat in the election. Looks like Billy and Rush were right, as things now stand.
Only a fool, or a Ditto head type would not acknowledge that Billy's frame of references are all right wing ideology, including nuking Iran, and how "Truman lost China" Bob Bullock was his mentor he said. Well guess what Bob Bullock was also a mentor to George W. Bush. Billy has team up, on several occassions with some of the most virulent racists that have posted on here. Fogu2, for one, and he even lamented when Fogu2 posted that he was leaving TPM
Every since the end of the primary, Billy has not even bothered to conceal h the fact that he is a right wing Republican. Hell, he has praised McCain every step of the way. Take a gander at how he went orgasmic about McCain's stupid mortgage proposal, and demanded that all Democrats sign on to it. Of course, after McCain's proposal crashed and burned, and McCain had to bail out once again from yet another wreck, why Billy went silent. Billy laid into "the hive" for resisting McCain's plan, then skulked away with McCain from the wreck.
Any one who thinks that Billy is a Democrat is either a fraud, or a fool. Only you can tell, which you are.
I do love how you just tried to spin it as; Billy is just a Maverick. God how we love that type these days.

First: sometimes I really like some of the things you say in comments and blogs. You're capable of coming up with some amusing and clever stuff.
Now. After making the mistake of sticking my nose into other peoples' fights, I've adopted a more aloof attitude and let people carry on without making my own damn unsolicitied comments. But since your blog sort of brings it up and thrusts it in everyone's attention, I'll throw this in (as someone who tries to avoid "choosing sides" in warring factions) -- I really wish you would just ignore Billy Glad if he gets under your skin so much. You two seem to spend a LOT of time sniping at each other.
Posts like this -- that call out and make fun of specific posters here (unless it's done in a genuine spirit of fun and good-natured affection, and this post is NOT) -- make a lot of folks here uncomfortable.
If you feel that Billy Glad is behaving badly, let HIM deal with the effects his behavior with the rest of the community.

Liam, I salute you. One of the funnier posts in recent rec. reader blogs. I've been reading the Hive manufacturings of that maligning Yellow WASP with some anger. I've watched the WASP slime a lot of posters on these reader blogs.
Interesting, is it not, that WASP slimes people like KateO, DF, Genghis, articleman and others and bslev, quinn and others make nary a defense on their behalf? But the minute WASP shows up as an object of criticism on a thread, WASPs defenders rush in to defend him.
So mavericky of them.
I will say, I never expected to find Clearthinker here defending WASP.

Your points of view are very black and white.
Where am I defending Billy Glad? I'm merely pointing out that Bruce correctly states that many here -- even some of the in-crowd -- do not practice the type of values that they find so lacking in others.
I will point out that I don't recall Billy typically resorting to name-calling.
But we all come here for different reasons. I come to sharpen my arguments, think a bit broader, and, yes, to help enlighten others -- and that doesn't mean everyone has to be the same political stripe. Some of the lesser well-behaved folks come here to make "friends" -- which is why some do want to inhabit the echo-chamber. We choose our friends as a reflection of ourselves. This is the reason for the banding together of some of the groups we see.
It's laughable that often these same people extol the virtues of "diversity" only to act in a way to suppress calmly stated, but differing opinions.

I'm always amazed when TPMers respond to people like BG and other trolls. The arguments devolve into pettiness pretty rapidly and more and more frequently become ad hominem attacks. In the end the only thing that has been accomplished is to bring joy and satisfaction to the troll for time well spent.

Just having a bit of fun. Did you ever see those news reports where the local law officials let certain people know that they have won, and they show up to claim their prizes.
I just wanted to sort out who is supposed to be in "The Hive" and who are the ones who are considered not to be in it. Looks like they have dropped in to shows us the "Mavericky" brand on their Yellow WASP asses. It makes it so much easier to sort out, once you know who the Queen WASP has placed her stamp of approval on.

When all the shouting was over with, not one of his cronies, or even he, ever even attempted to refute what I posted, that he opposed Senator Obama all the way, and has had nothing but praise for Senator McCain, but yet he wants to be able to boast about we having elected a black man, even though he never wanted to see him elected.

Billy's an instigator, and I don't mean that in a bad way. His posts usually push boundaries and generate genuine dialog, even when you don't agree. Sorry I missed Billy's post yesterday because there was an actual conversation going on there, unlike here where like most of Liam's posts it's just sloganeering and insults to the people who do not agree with him.
