An Open Letter to Sheriff Mike Scott (Middle Name Unknown) of Lee County, FL

After months of daily reading at TPM, I post my first blog....an open letter to Sheriff Mike Scott, of Lee County, Florida who introduced Sarah Palin today at a rally in Estero/Ft Myers.  But before doing so, rallied the troops by yelling, "On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened."   Yes, I have heard Sen. Obama's middle name evoked many times as some sort of racial slur or prejudiced obscenity but never so hatefully, by an elected officer of my home state.

And so I share my letter to Sheriff Scott, which I e-mailed to him this evening and I encourage you to also drop the Sherriff a line at sheriff@sheriffleefl.org

Subject: Feedback on your public appearance

Sheriff Scott-

As a Florida resident for nearly 40 years, I was ashamed to watch your hateful comments replayed on the national news networks today.  You are an elected official, representing all of Lee County, not just the most prejudiced factions of the Republican party.

Hearing you scream into the microphone, "On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened," was sickening and an embarrassment to our state.   If as an elected law enforcement officer, sworn to protect all Lee County residents, you must wax partisan this election season...can you not do it with even a smidgen of decency?  What happened to words like "honor" and "duty" and "respect" in your oath of office?  They were nowhere to be found in your 10 seconds of fame.

It is an embarrassment to the Ft Myers area to see you, uniform and all, spitting into the microphone hateful, divisive words.  Truly a low stoop for such a high office that you are privileged, up until now, to hold.   You want to step into the spotlight to introduce Sarah Palin?  Have at it--enjoy yourself--but do it with some dignity, knowing you are an elected representative of a very diverse county and state.   A state that will most likely vote for Obama in less than 30 days.

Your image was so offensive to me that I googled your name, found your site and looked up your e-mail address.   I have now spent 20 minutes of my evening expressing my Floridian voice to let you know you made a BIG splash today.  Wow.  Replay the tape...something to really be proud of, while our nation teeters on financial collapse and John McCain promises a respectful campaign, out come you in your neatly pressed uniform to show America how bigoted and ignorant the white South is in 2008.  What's that old saying your beloved Gov. Palin is fond of using to describe folks like you, oh yeah, "The good old boys network."  Well, you showed 'em, Mike....the legend lives on in Lee County.

My only consolation is that I live in Escambia County and didn't take a job in Ft Myers last year when offered by the VP of my company.  Oh, and that Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States.  Yeah, that will help me sleep soundly tonight.

Good luck in your next election.  Judging by the 10 seconds I saw tonight, you'll need it.

Thanks for doing this!

I just wrote a message to Scott too.

Good job. Let us know if the sheriff jerk replies to you.

Hurrah for you! I'm a kindred soul. I don't spend time blogging, but was so upset by Mike Scott's display that I found myself online this morning, searching for the uniforms name, and looking for ways to express my concern. Here's my take:

So I turn on the news Monday morning and - what a way to start the week! I was shocked to see a uniformed official making a blatant and ugly statement designed to endorse one political candidate and slur another. This was on official, charged with serving the taxpayers of his county and/or state, fear-mongering on their dime. I'm wondering if there are legal ramifications. He represents the taxpayers when he is in uniform - and his actions imply the police department endorses a political candidate. Can we, as taxpayers, file suit? Or at a minimum, demand a public apology?

And then there's Palin... I get a chill when she accuses Obama of palling around with domestic terrorists. Would this type of administration usher in a new era of McCarthyism? Will the witch hunt be on for domestic terrorists and their sympathizers? Perhaps dissenters will be shut down and any police officer that refuses to "play ball" will be dismissed. I, for one, do not want this type of administration in power - or their gung ho sheriff knocking on my door.

I'm not sure what the rules are for policemen but I do know that military members are forbidden from wearing their uniforms at political rallies.

Cheers, LilFlVoice, Zemer and Synchronicity. And great question...it seems like being a hate propagandist in a public, uniformed appearance would be an ethical violation for an elected official. I will look into this.

Reading Sheriff Mike Scott's bone-headed, stubborn defense of his use of words is possibly more infuriating than the original action. Does he think we are stupid? I know it's a familair assumption of the right...in the vacuum of ignorance, every violation of truth and trust can be dutifully accepted, re-packaged, even vindicated.

The only reason Sheriff Mike Scott of Lee County, Florida, uses Barack Obama's middle name at a political rally is to rattle a divisive, cultural saber, making an issue of this "different" name, allude to that rascally devil Saddam and of course, all at once, race bait the crowd. It is to take a word, a name, and use it as a cultural, racial, religious dagger while decidedly shoving it into the hearts and minds of the American people. It is disgraceful and Sheriff Scott defending it as simply an inexplicable desire to use Obama's full name is even more shameful. Liar. Bigot. Sore Loser. Ex-Sheriff.

Jess,
Takes guts to write like you did being from Escambia. Spent 15 years there and my props to you!! I agree with your sentiments, Scott is an embarrassment to law enforcement everywhere. An officer should keep his/her politics outside of official duties!!

Thanks, anjinsan! I just found Sheriff Mike Scott's re-election site. Can you believe he is actually running this year for another term and acting so defiant and unapologetic to his constituents in Lee County?

To email him at his campaign site, go to: mike@wewantmike.com.

We don't want mike! I wonder if wedontwantmike.com is taken??? Maybe I should check....and post my open letter there!

well yes it is available.....wedontwantmike.com now points to this post and will be a site devoted to covering this story and his re-election bid later today! spread the word and send the link!

Well done. This sort of behaviour needs to be dealt with, rather than encouraged and then ignored as McCain's politics would do so.

Thanks for that letter. It was time well spent.

You'll be gratified to know that CNN just played the sheriff's introduction and clearly tied him to the racism that followed. The sheriff will be issuing a public apology soon, I suspect.

Sheriff Scott may be in for a much rougher ride than will be satisfied by a simple apology:

A federal investigation is being opened into the actions and comments of Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott at a rally for Gov. Sarah Palin in Estero on Monday.

Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney at the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, wrote in an e-mail to a third party that her office will be investigating under the Hatch Act, which governs political activities of certain elected officials.

The complainant stated the sheriff violated that act because the sheriff’s office receives federal money, engaged in political activity while on duty, engaged in political activity while in uniform, wore political buttons while on duty and used political influence or authority to interfere with an election.

HA! Serves him right. Whether not he gets off the hook, he's been spanked. A-hole deserves it.

I went to the link you provided, and these lines are pertinent:

Sheriff Mike Scott defended his use of Barack Obama’s middle name, “Hussein,” while on stage Monday at a rally for vice presidential hopeful Gov. Sarah Palin.

“I absolutely, unequivocally don’t regret saying it,” Scott said. “In order to be a speaker at this event, I had to give my full name — Michael Joseph Scott — to the Secret Service, even though I’m the sheriff of Lee County. So why would I apologize? Is there some kind of double standard here where I have to give my full name, but I can’t use his?”

Scott was one of several people who spoke before Palin’s arrival in front of a standing room-only crowd at Germain Arena.

When Scott took the stage, he declared the world had three types of people, “the ones who make things happen, the ones who watch what happens and the ones who wonder what happened. Let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”

The arena, about three-quarters full at the time, burst into screams and applause.

No matter how much they deny and protest, using Obama's middle name is simply code to stir up fear, xenophobia, and racism and to justify the ignorance that spawns them.

The problem for them at the moment is that one of their fears is justified: that their regressive, untruthful candidates are not going to win.

Thank You; see ignorance of the "law" is no excuse.

Early this am I e-mailed the AG of Florida with this exact complaint. Possible hate crime instigation? By a public servant(?) in uniform no less. What a scary sight, it turned my stomach. I am old enough to remember Hitler, in uniform and screaming hate.

avatar

I took the liberty of posting the sheriff's email address and campaign address on other sites and asked people to bombard his sorry ass with letters of disapproval of his disgusting behavior.

avatar

Thank you for writing to this pathetic officer. This hate speech has run its course in America and it is time for it to be called out and buried deep. We want a new direction for our country and a new
higher level of discourse starting NOW.
Obama has a very nice gentlemanly nature that will serve as a good role model...and we can leave this kind of hatefulness behind forever.

avatar

just wrote a sarcastic email to the so-called public official, commending him on his efforts to divide people and inspire racial bigotry. It is exactly the fuel for our more righteous fire.

Wow--incredible news. I am so glad to hear Sheriff Scott may be held accountable for the abuse of his office in spreading divisive, racist propaganda. I will stay tuned and add all these links to the new site I am creating tonight....www.wedontwantmike.com.

I'm not a Florida voter. I'm an old retired school teacher with an old retired husband. We have a small RV. And defined benefit retirement income(s) that, for the moment anyway, seem relatively stable. And we have time to travel.

But we're picky about where we spend our money. And Lee County now heads the list of places where we won't be parting with cash.

I hope the racists who elected Scott can support his projects. I prefer to spend my money in a place that recognizes that we have a constitution.

Thank you for the leg work on this. I found the man disgusting, but hadn't considered looking him up and letting him know how I felt.

I have now added my e-mail to yours. Hopefully he will not be re-elected...Could you keep us posted on that?

I wonder if having an Obama sticker on your car is "probable cause" to the sheriff's department in Lee County?

PS. Nice going for an elected officer in a state that DEPENDS on tourism when half the country right (potential tourists and customers) have OBAMA stickers on their cars.

I used to live in Daytona.

---half the country right now----

avatar

I am sure that you fired off a letter of outrage to the Obama campaign after Obama told supporters to "get in people's faces". Right?

OBAMA's statement -- the statement of the actual top of the ticket -- was over the top, and offensive.

This campaign is going to get very ugly before it's over, and we have Obama to thank for taking it there.

I wonder why they call sheriffs and policemen peace officers? Wouldn't it be nice if that were really so?

Check out http://sheriffmikescott.blogspot.com

Thanks for all the great feedback. Way to go, lawatchdog1. I didn't create an official site for wedontwantmike.com yet...but I am starting to think keeping it routed to this active blog is best after all! Makes it easy it find. Keep the updates coming! And Obama wins the debate. Makes for a good day all around.

This is sooo Dumb!!!! Please deal with the simple fact that Obama's middle name is Hussein. It was not something Mike Scott invented, it is real. Who cares anyway, get a life. Why don't you try to focus on something that actually matters!!!

Tyler11-

Thanks for your feedback. Even McCain's official campaign publicly denounces the use of Obama's midle name in rallies as offensive. Sorry you do not, no matter what side of the fence you may sit.

I am not dumb, neither are the Republicans screaming "Hussein" into the mics at these rallies now that their candidate is losing. If it didn't "actually matter" as you say, why would they even waste their breath? Why don't they introduce Sarah Palin by her middle name? Hell, I don't even know it, never heard it uttered. Guess it doesn't "actually matter."

Hussein actually does matter. That's why it's such a popular topic this week. And the way it is being used as a wedge of racism and xenophopia is divisive and damaging, especially when used by an elected law officer like Sheriff Scott.

If you want to defend these nefarious tactics as simply the preference to use Obama's middle name, that's fine with me. Maybe you even relish in the hisses the sound of those two syllables elicit in certain crowds. That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. But correct me if I am wrong...you don't wear a uniform, representing a county in my great state and stand on a podium in front of thousands of people and scream Hussein like you've just scored a huge point with the Republican team.

This is what I take offense to, more than the ignorance and anger Sheriff Scott's motives represent, and apparently the Feds do too. We'll see what they find in their investigation into the abuse of power and violation of the Hatch Act.

Ok I live in Fort Myers, Florida, I was born and reaised here. Mike Scott is a good man and the best sheriff we have ever had. He is not a hateful person. You people DO NOT know him, so how can you pass judgement on him? If you were to actually go back and watch any interview he has ever done or any speaking engagement he has ever done you would know that is him. This has gotten out of control. There are people saying hateful things about him sending hateful e-mails, and yes if you dont live here than why make it you business? He did not do anything wrong you just do not know who he speaks. He has cleaned up Fort Myers, and he had attacked drug dealers and hookers should he be punished for that to? People are so small minded and they tend to put their oun little spin on things. I guess this country is rich, rich with stupidity. Im sure our for fathers are turning in their graves right now over how dirty this election has gotten. would this be an issue if obamas middle name was joe??? I THINK NOT!!! for people to encourage people to hate someone they dont know like this, and it started over people thinking Mike Scott was being hateful, whick he was not being by the way. So you encourage hate to fight hate, that is smart thinking. That is why this country is a mess not because of the people we vote for but becayse of hate. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. he never showed hate and he went through a lot mort than most people he was at the front line fighting for equal rights and he always told people not to hate that fighting hate with hate is wrong. If Dr. King was to act like like people are acting over Mike Scott would obama have the chance to run for president, Dr. King stood up for him. Dr. King knew this day would come when a man of color would maybe become president. It has gotten so nasty im ashamed. McCain is being linked to being just like Bush, whats the difference I will tell you the difference is that Obamas middle name is was true. Im one of the undecided voters, and i know as nasty as this election has been I hope an independent jumps in last min. Even early on in the election it was obama vs. clinton and that was really nasty, then it was obama vs. mccain and is really nasty. My 8 yr old acts like more of an adult than our canidates. There is an old saying prople in glass houses should not toss stones, another old saying is if you have nothing nice to say say nothing at all, or 2 wrongs does not make a right. Does any of them sound familier? Well just remember I dont know any of you that posted hateful comments, but dont judge people unless you know them and a 30 second sound bite played on national tv is not knowing him. Go to our local tv station and watch other events he made speeches at or watch is debate with Shope or watch an interview he has given to the media about a drug bust or crime needing solved the same night this happened 10-6-08 he spoke about Lee County commishioners cutting funding to the DARE program and just see who he is whe he talkes, you will have another view of who he sounded when he made the statement about obama, he was not being hateful thats how he talks. www.nbc-2.com or winktv.com before you pass judgement please do the reasearch. Thank You from a Fort Myers Florida native

The following is the email I wrote to Sheriff Mike Scott. I am not saying he is a good or not good man. I cannot judge. But I wrote the email because of my genuine concern of what perception can evoke:

... I was raised in Central Florida, know many officers in that area and have a deep admiration for the commitment that the police of Florida have to making our state better. The reason I am writing is in regards to the comments you made. I realize that from your perspective, as you have stated, you do not believe you have done anything wrong, but my concerns are that perception can sometimes become reality. I am not accusing you of being a racist, but I think that the tonality of the rally you attended certainly had a racial tinge in the air. Not all mind you, but some of the audience. To my dismay, this was not discouraged by you or your party. This is what fundamentally bothers me, as I was privileged to grow up in a racially diverse area and enjoy both the company and culture of different types of people. My father is a conservative ad I have never been political in the past, but as of late I have been inspired. I believe that Barack Obama is an example of the great diversity and accomplishments of our country. This has opened up a dialog among my conservative father and I that never existed in the past, and this is what's important. We are discussing the future of our nation and questioning how our government can be improved. But we are doing it in a constructive way, with understanding and respect of each others' views and party. This is what was lacking in your method of comment in addition to the rally. And what I don't understand is how you can be so angry towards a candidate that has devoted his life to furthering the education of our children. I want Barack Obama to be president because I believe he inspires action in others. What I cannot digest is that the comments from a Florida sheriff could potentially cause harm to another person's being, let alone a candidate for the presidency. Please in the future think of what influence you can have on others, and if Mccain is your man you are certainly entitled to that, but I am also entitled to my candidate of choice. God forbid if something were to happen, you would have to live with the fact that you were silent in regards to stopping atrocity. You would have to live with the fact that as that rally became more incensed with anger, you contributed to it. I wish you the best, as I do all Americans and patriots, and I hope that if Obama is elected, that you understand it is because of the great promise and hope of America that he got there.

If you read what I wrote above you post, If ya'll would take the time and go to our local tv stations and watch his interviews you would see that is how he talks. Mike Scott does alot in the Black community, he is not racist. He does his shopping in that area and talks to the business owners, he listens to their concerns and then he acts on them to make them safe. He is being judged by his tone, when that is his tone all the time. Some one on this site sate up a web site www.wedontwantmike.com the owner of that site dont even live here. Im just asking that ya'll watch some of his interviews on www.nbc-2.com or winktv.com ( His past stuff not just the video from monday) get a look at the person and how he is before sending him hateful stuff or saying hateful things about him. He did not try to sway voters. Obama and McCain and their running mates have said things just like that the only difference is Mike Scott (whos middle name is Joseph and he uses it all the time) said Obamas middle name. Some times a name is just a name. What makes this different is the small minds of people looking for something more. There is nothing to be read into it. Now there are 2 more people who used Obamas middle name that are in trouble, Thats crazy. The US is in such big trouble but ya'll focus on the petty stuff. if we are going to ruin the lives of 3 men for saying something that some people took wrong and made it into a racists issue then this country will always be divided. If Mike Scott and the 2 State Attorneys are getting in trouble for saying their statements than every one who holds an elected office that speaks at any rally for either Obama or McCain should get in trouble because they say the same statements. what good for one is good for all. The point Im tring to make is there is no bad motive in Mike Scotts voice when he made that statement, and move on and quit making a mountain out of a mole hill. Worry about the trash talk, and name calling going on between Obama and McCain and the lies that they tell people so they can get elected, because everything they say they will do for us if we vote for them if it does make it thre Congress it will not happen. so remember that when obama says he will give us tax breaks, or he can fix this counrtys money problems, or lower gas prices, or McCain when he says that he will do this or that congress holds the power to do those things not the president. If ya'll think either one of the presidental hopefuls care about us (well just our vote thats all) or they can relate to us your kidding yourselves. When was the last time you brought home 4 Million a year. When was the last time either Obama or McCain made $7.50 an hour or even $ 20.00 an hour, My guess is they have not had to live like that, When was the last time they we close to loosing their home because of all the layoffs? The need to bring our factorys back to the us and stop sending our work our of the country, well wait the president does not have that power. So do the research and see how people are and how they talk on a day to day basis before judgeing them. The way I look at it if Obama himself doesnt have is panties in a wod than neither should anyone else. Thank You from a Fort Myers, Florida Native

nascargrl4jj-

Thanks for your feedback as a Ft Myers native. I am not saying hateful things about Mike Scott. I am saying, as many of us here, that Scott misused his position of power as the Sheriff of Lee County to push an angry, divisive and many would argue racist agenda. This is wrong.

Mike Scott is an elected official and it is a violation of the Hatch Act to even appear on public-paid time, in uniform at a political event. He did this and it was wrong. It was misuse of power and his words and attitude were disrespectful and partisan.

You are exactly right, if Barack Obama's middle name was "Joe," it wouldn't be an issue. THAT IS THE POINT OF THIS ENTIRE POST. The only reason Sheriff Scott used Obama's middle name was to be divisive. If Obama's middle name was AOK with the Republican crowd, it would not be mentioned. Again, Scott didn't mention Sarah Palin's middle name, did he? Did he mention John McCain's middle name? No, because they are irrelevant. "Hussein" on the other hand...well that's a different matter to Sheriff Scott. And we all know why: it's an easy shot to take. Paint Obama as "different," scary, foreign, maybe even a terrorist of some kind (or friends with them) and start with screaming his middle name at a rally you have no business speaking at in your Sheriff's uniform.

McCain warned the campaign was going to get dirty this week..."tough" as Sarah Palin said. Well, I guess it has and Sheriff Scott has been a willing, wrong participant. Sounds like it has cast a huge shadow over all the great things you say he has accomplished. What a waste.

All that Sheriff Scott has to do is say, "I am sorry if my words or my presence in uniform at a partisan political event offended anyone." Like I said in an earlier post, his refusal to apologize and his stubborn defense of these actions is possibly worse than the original offense itself. He has made the matter far worse.

And no I don't live in Ft Myers. I live in Escambia County FL and have for 40 yrs. I have been to Ft Myers a dozen times and was offered a job there last year that I did not take. Again, I am not attacking the Sheriff or saying hateful words. I am bringing attention to behavior that is completely unacceptable for an elected official in my home state...behavior the Sheriff refuses to apologize for and until he does, it remains an issue of grave concern to me.

If you are such a strong supporter of Sheriff Scott, maybe you could express this concern to him and encourage him to apologize for offending so many people with what he has done this week.

Thank you from an Escambia County FL Native

Speak, just FYI--Sheriff Scott has shut down the wewantmike.com site. For one thing, he was starting to catch heat over his campaign song. He had some local hack re-record it with different (juvenile) lyrics, but didn't obtain any permission to use the material. Since he was always ranting about objectionable lyrics in rap songs, his theft of material from a Rasta man looked a little hypocritical.

Hey Starfish-

Thanks for the update! I had no idea about the "I Shot the Sheriff" controversial tune on Sheriff Scott's site. I can't believe they pulled his entire campaign site down. Seems like aplogizing for his antics this week and removing the Marley tune would be much easier. :-) Bizarre.

avatar

Scott may have had his IT wizards unplug the site, but the text is still cached in Google. He may be updating claims like these (from the site):

"Florida's Governor and Lt. Governor
Endorse Mike" and

"The News Press headlines note Mike's integrity...gone are the days of disgraceful headlines!"

What is disturbing is the "privacy policy" which can only be seen if you click the "email Mike" button. It seems that by merely viewing the site you are "agreeing" to having lots of personal data collected about you, but you're not aware of this unless you try to send Mike an email. Is this kosher?

Here's the statement. I've never seen anything like this before. Is it even possible to do this? Talk about the "thought police." Sheeesh.
