A Call To Action! Prepare for Voter Fraud, Suppression and the Stolen Electon

Recent and past articles have pointed to the fact that this election, like the past two, are likely to be tainted by all kinds of problems related to voter suppression, mistakes in the registration process, fraud and untrustworthy electronic voting machines.

What are we going to do? What CAN we do?

First, I suggest that we begin to point out these problems frequently - in all our favorite blogs and in letters to members of the Congress. We need to make this a story that people notice and that they are thinking about. We need to write letters to newspapers, write to members of the MSM, make phone calls and do whatever we can to make it clear that a stolen vote is unacceptable, and that there's already enough evidence that this election is in trouble to warrant concern.

Second, we need a plan. What are we going to do if Obama is leading strongly in the polls on Nov. 4 and on Nov. 5 McCain is declared the winner? I, for one, favor a national strike, and a national roll-call of everyone who voted for Obama. I am strongly in favor of shutting down the presidency until the situation is resolved, and never, ever again, letting the Supreme Court decide who is to be president.

But those are just my off-the-top ideas. What about you? Let's discuss what we can do to make sure that the legitimate candidate wins, and that our vote is not stolen again.

I hit the send button accidentally, so I want to add - Please rec this so we can all participate in the discussion, and please add your links to relevant articles if you can.

Let's work together as a group to share ideas and perhaps to implement a strategy to prevent another stolen election.

Thanks, all of you.

One thing that we can do is spread the word about the following:
If voter fraud is suspected:
call the Election Protection Hotline
at 866-OUR-VOTE
Their Web site is www.866ourvote.org
They also need volunteers.

You might also want to read the following article on protecting voter’s rights:
http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=protecting_voter_rights

Oh please. Concentrate on winning the election.

You must be unconscious. We have had four straight elections with serious voter suppression and every dirty trick and probably out and out criminality with voting machines.

Last night's Democracy Now had Greg Palast and RFK, Jr talking about the massive voter suppression underway in this election.

Diebold Diebold Diebold

scares the hell out of me. As a voter in a state affected (GA) I look at this in fear and wonder.

There is plenty you can do in Georgia to make sure you can vote on election day.

Election information from the Georgia Board of Elections:

That's the whole point is to incite fear amongst voters! This has been out for awhile and McCain Backers are a part of it, this is a longtime GOP stunt that happens everytime they think they are going to get thier ass kicked! They prey on the low-income, elderly, and uneducated. The truth will come out, it eventually does. If you want to make your vote count, then contact your local division of elections, check your status and vote! If you don't... then shut the hell up, cuz you have NO room to complain.

There are quite a few problems in the upcoming election. Whoever is behind it, it's real, and though I agree that everyone needs to double check their registration, it won't be that simple. It is a problem, and if you don't get that, then you weren't paying attention in 2000 and 2004.

Ironically, I just got email from a group that is suggesting action we can take. I am not advocating for it, but calling your attention to it. Check it out and see if it makes sense to you:

This was the topic of an NPR show I heard this afternoon. It is already in the air and a major concern... especially for those in the swing states.

Thank you for this post.

Just a reminder: This post isn't just to discuss the fact that there are serious threats to our democracy that loom over this election it's to do two things:

1. Post all the links and references you can find that detail the problems.

2. Suggest ways we can fight against these problems and ways to respond if, indeed, the vote ends up being stolen.

We already know it's a problem, and I would say that all of us are concerned. What I'm looking for is some TPM smarts to help clearly identify the problems and to suggest ways we can fight for our rights.

So, please, participate in sharing ideas. I'm sure you have some.

Thanks

Videotape it!

If you anticipate voter suppression bring your camera. If you see voter suppresion videotape it. Post it on youtube, send it to TPM, CNN, MSNBC, etc. If you see long lines at polling places in low-income urban neighborhoods, videotape it.

No one pays enough attention to letters and phone calls these days. If widespread voter suppression occurs and we want to prove it to the public, the public is going to demand video evidence.

Remember to WATCH WHAT YOU WEAR to the polls.

At first I thought this was a voter suppression tactic. But after hearing the subject brought up on Air America, it turns out to be true!

Some states consider t-shirts, hats, buttons with a candidates name/logo, to be against voting rules (similar to the rule that campaign signs must be 500ft away from any polling place).

It depends on your state, but to be on the safe side just remind people:

Don't wear Obama gear to vote!

avatar

Check your state rules before you go to vote. There is no regular rule on this--it varies state by state. Virginia has a rather strong rule against wearing materials with candidate's names on it, but Maryland allows voters to wear campaign materials while they are voting.

If you wear anything identifying your support for Obama where that might not be the socially popular thing to do, you are ASKING to be targeted and challenged.

Here is a link to my previous blog on voter supression and there is some information I later found in the comments to this blog:

Let's hope that Obama has a strategy to deal with the possibility of a stolen election. He's had a brilliant strategy thus far, so I'm guessing this is covered. If he doesn't have a strategy to address this issue, I'd be very surprised and disappointed. He's got plenty of funds and I'm sure he will have a professional, watchful eye at every stage of the voting process in order to oversee what's going on. If his people think a stolen election is taking shape or likely, perhaps he will address plans for such a possibility during this air time he's buying on TV:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/obama_campaign_buying_halfhour.php

I have definitely thought about this TV buy of Obama's. I have high hopes that it will be something stunning, as only Obama can provide. Keeping fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, I'm still in happy shock after reading the Esquire endorsement.

Another thought...the Obama campaign should be saving enough money so that if the election were stolen, he could activate his huge campaign network in the states in question, to re-record each vote on his behalf. Sounds monumental, but with good advertising and a 1-800 number, I think it could be done in short order. With names and addresses of those who voted for him, something could be done. I'm not sure how the leftover money thing works, but if he doesn't use the money, and he could send a small amount back to each supporter? What a novel move that would be--and just imagine the loyalty and trust it would build.

I would donate money to that cause, and I think millions more would do so, too.

What are we going to do if Obama is leading strongly in the polls on Nov. 4 and on Nov. 5 McCain is declared the winner?

Last night on CNN, James Carville said, "If Obama is up by 11 points now and McCain wins the election, I gotta tell ya, it's not going to be... things could get very... there could be... well, I'll just say that it wouldn't be a..."

He wanted to say that all hell will break loose. But he knew better.

I think there's less chance of this than in 2004 and 2000, but it's still good to be prepared. Probably a "flood the zone" approach will be necessary: calls to representatives at all levels, court cases, work walkouts and strikes, nonviolent direct action, etc. I don't know how much pre-planning is necessary other than to make people aware of the issue. I'm guessing it will be a bad idea to only wait for cues from the Obama campaign. Even if there are major shenanigans, they might proceed more cautiously than many of us would like (though I'd expect them to be more forceful than Gore was).

Speaking as an NYC resident, I decided back in 2004 that if some crazy stuff went down where Bush stole it again we needed to have a couple hundred thousand people down at Wall Street every day after that trying to shut down the exchange in a peaceful, nonviolent, but certainly civilly disobedient fashion (with a few thousand getting arrested every day and filling the jails). I think it would be quite possible to do something like that in a month if necessary, and given the last few weeks it might actually be a popular move - even among conservatives! Of course trying to shut down Wall Street for a couple of weeks is a radical thing to do, but if the election is stolen it will call for radical responses. Some national coordination would be needed, but a lot of the action would need to come from local initiative. New Yorkers and other residents of large cities and/or state capitals would probably have to play an important role.

But I don't think it will come to that (if it does, see ya at the barricades). On the flip-side, watch out for GOP accusations that Obama stole the election if he wins (c.f. their recent obsession with ACORN). Right now that outcome is far more likely and we'll need a different strategy for that.

Every vote matters because we need a voter supression/fraud proof margin of victory and the bigger the victory we can achieve the more united the country will feel.

The track record in Florida is dismal. I love the beach & hate cold weather, but at any election it is nothing but total chaos. You can't trust the machines, still no paper trail after eight years! If you hand deliver your balot you have to worry it won't be processed because it had no stamp. they use every trick in the book.

In 2006 I spoke up when I hand delivered with a stamp, that I felt uneasy about votes being counted, they said everyone does, now I worry because it will be thrown out because the stamp wasn't cancelled. If Obama wins FL it will be a miracle!

Between Palin & voting fraud nerves are frayed to the max.

Please forgive misspelling of ballot, not enough sleep lately.

The day after the election, we should all plan to hold a rally at a park either to celebrate or to protest. One way or the other, there should be a very large gathering to support each other and get going about turning this country around.

PS - Welcome everyone! It's a purple nation afterall.

Keep in mind the media is already putting out a likely scenario for an Obama loss if he is way ahead in the polls. That is the Bradley Effect.

The NYT ran a story on states purging voter rolls, sometimes illegally.

Could this be why the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Infantry division is now on active duty in the US, with a specific mission to quell civil unrest?

Connecting the dots...

I saw the President of Common Cause outline many voting issues last night on C-Span, many that I wasn't even aware of. Common Cause have released some emergency information for 10 swing states and will release information for all states soon.

PRESS RELEASE

Protecting the vote
October 9, 2008: Common Cause has launched a far-reaching "Protect the Vote" campaign in nearly a dozen states nationwide to strengthen and protect our nation's system of voting and assure that eligible voters are able to vote and that those votes are counted in this historic election. The campaign includes election protection work in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California and New York.

For California, at least the foreclosure issue won't deny the right to vote:

A spokeswoman from the secretary of state's office told The [Sacramento] Bee this week that people who recently lost their homes can still vote at their old precincts. Several local registrars confirmed that they will allow voters to cast ballots either where they used to live or, by provisional ballot, at their new address without re-registering.

(For those who don't want to risk it, there is still time to re-register: the deadline is Oct. 20.)

Bobby Kennedy Jr and Greg Palast have a number of ideas in a comic book form at http://www.gregpalast.com/sbyv/

On radio programs they have both urged everyone to use early voting where possible, so that if there are registration or ID problems they can be worked out before election day. They also say DO NOT accept a provisional ballot (significant numbers end up in the trash). The other recommendation was not to use a mail in ballot because the election boards can invalidate them for a whole variety of questionable causes (like a democratic zip code).

Kennedy and Palast: "The election has already been stolen. Now we have to steal it back"

I just wanted to share something about the vote that a friend called to my attention. It's really worth clicking this link from The Economist:

Thanks Raider for a great topic and post. You a Palast fan? Im reading What Happened in Ohio at the moment on vacation in Mexico.

I would contribute to organizations that will help challenge suppression in courts now, such as the purging and the caging in MI. Any tips on orgs that do this well? Common Cause? I have sent money to a few in the past year and will give names if others are interested.

I also want to raise awareness. Trumped up voter fraud gets nonstop play on Fox News, McCain shoves it down their throats, and the other MSM mindlessly comply. I would contribute to fund advertising.

Would any newspaper print a letter about this? I live in Illinois, so alot of concern is outside the jurisdiction for the Presidential...

Perhaps funding a better smelling plane would help convince Old Media to report on real threats to fair elections.

Did anyone notice we missed our chance to ask Diebold for paper trails earlier this year?

Finally, Im glad Obama is doing more than Kerry. But I also believe his campaign should be doing more, educating the media on the facts, on the dangers. How to influence this?

I have followed Palast's work off and on, and believe he is doing heroic work to try to wake this country up.

It's clear that we have to be prepared.
