Why did Bush ruin the country?
He ruined the country because his basic governing philosophy is that governing is the creation of problems, not the solving of them.

He ruined the country in an overzealous effort to prove that, indeed, government is not the answer.

He ruined the country because once he started screwing things up he decided that he should at least do that really well.
Or...
He ruined the country because he was miserable and wanted to send the world to hell so he could get to heaven as soon as possible... I am not a christian and the radical edge of ever religion is disturbing to me.

I think he just looked at the country as his personal cookie jar and he could share the cookies w/ his friends and everything would be fine and he'd go off and have a nice life...BUT, he gave away all the cookies and now there is nothing left..oh, well...someone else's problem!

Ruination is his specialty!

I believe totally that it was intentional.
I go back to the letter Dwight Eisenhower wrote to his grandson in which he said all those years ago that there was a group of wealthy people, mostly Texas oil men, who were determined to roll back the New Deal. I think this was planned when FDR was still in office.
I honestly do. They meant to undo everything FDR did and they pretty much have and that's why we're ruined. FDR saved our financial systems and saved the country with regulations that the rich have hated for over 50 years.

I agree that much of this was totally intentional and other aspects were just over confidence.
Bush and the people around him have an extremist's mindset in that the ideologies that they believe in should be implemented no matter what and as deeply as they can.
So for example instead of looking at our economy and budget and deciding that we are in good shape so taxes can be cut; they were going to cut taxes no matter what the economic situaiton was.
Instead of looking at our federal regulations and killing the ones that they beleived were overreach or that had negative effects; they walked in with a blowtorch and burned all of them.
Taxes and government regulation need to be managed by people who have more than one thought on the subject and unfortunately for this country Bush's crew and for that matter McCains' are all one trick ponies.

I agree completely. This was about bankrupting the country in order to provide an excuse to kill entitlements. That's what the $700 billion is about as well. Unfortunately, it looks like owned Democrats like Chuck Schumer are going to sell us down the river.

I agree with HusseinTenaX. I think he intended from the start to take the country for a ride and get all he could for he and his handlers. In fact, I think he was following marching orders. The little s**t NEVER intended to govern anything. He was a liar from the word go.

Because he could.
What else can a mediocre, uninquisitive, business failure do but ride the coat-tails of his father to the Presidency?
He has, to his credit, finally seen his goal of a bipartisan congress. The fact that it is bipartisan congress who have severe issues with his call for an urgent handout to those who flooded the financial markets with the pyramid scheme known as "Mortgage Backed Securities" may rankle a bit, but I'm sure he'll shrug it off as he seems to do.

He ruined it because "presidenting is hard!"
Seriously, Bush has been flying in the face of a mountain of evidence provided by the Peter Principle.

He ruined this country because it was the only one he was President of.
Sure, he severely damaged a number of other countries; but there's only so much you can do from the outside.

He ruined it because he doesn't know any better.
He's been following Reagan's anti-government philosophy. Republicans have been following it these past 28 years. Even Bill Clinton went along during his presidency. Bush, however, has been the most aggressive Reagan anti-government zealot.
Bush has taken it on faith that Reagan was right. Most Republicans do. Because of their idolized attachment to the personality of the man, Republicans assume without question and in the face of contrary evidence, that Reagan's governing philosophies to be correct.
Right now, we see Republicans trying to blame this Wall Street fiasco on the poor or, on liberals, on anyone, on anything, other than Reagan's anti-government conservatism. They are the party of zealots.

He ruined the country because they would not let him brand his fraternity brothers with hot coat hangers anymore. And after what happened to Michael Vick, he's afraid to rip wings off of birds. So, what does everyone expect?

Remember, kill the beast. If the government is so in deficit it will be able to bail on social security and medicare. It was intentional but over done.

I would do a variation on what you said -- that he ruined the country because his governing philosophy was to turn government into an instrument of private gain. Whether he believes government creates problems or not, it seems quite clear to me that he wanted to make sure it enriched his cronies. Rampant privatization, Halliburton, now the bailout, and every big project -- from Iraq to Katrina -- reflects this. As does the fact that he appointed corporate foxes to watch the henhouse, emasculating regulations and enabling corporate greed run rampant. Plus, the fact that his tax cuts were aimed at the rich.
All his rhetoric was just a cover for the looting of the public purse.
As for anything else? He didn't give a shit.

According to John Oliver on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, it's not so Bush will be the worst president ever, it's so he'll be the last president ever.

That line is actually attributed to James Buchanan:

This should not be much of a question. Wolfowitz et al have written plenty of papers in the 1990's about how to finally contract government: break it until until you simple have it sink under it's own weight.
The information is easily out there, here is just an example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_Century
Now, let's dispel the notion that this is based on wealth. That would be easy to deal with. This is based on ideology. How do we know? Because the NeoCons tell us.
That's why it's more scary. It's based on the idea of making America completely dominant in the world. It's based on *patriotic reasons*.
That's why they are are so committed to their ideals. They, like all radicals, honestly believe they are doing the best for the country.
Now the left doesn't understand this last point. But they should. Because until you understand the other side, you can't deal with them.
Now GWB surrounds himself with these people -- well, what do you think is going to happen?
Okay, that's the first reason he broke the country, it was intentional.
The second reason? He wanted to keep his track record intact. He's broken nearly everything he's touched.
