TPM Needs a Lie Tracker

So the McCain campaign has thrown down the gauntlet saying that it is playing to win and does not really care about whether or not its claims make it through the media filter of truth or not.  Well, if this is not a challenge, I don't know what is.  It also seems to me something that requires a very basic, clear, and honest response.  Thus, a suggestion: TPM could begin a "Lie Tracker."  I guess this would be similar to Obama's anti-smear website, but I think it is importantly different.  The lie tracker would follow claims from the McCain campaign about public policy, their record, or Obama's record, not claims flying around the web about Obama the person.

The "Lie Tracker" could simply begin with a numbered list of lies and the date the lie was first made, with links to information demonstrating the reality of the lie.  If the lie is told again, don't give it a new number, just add the date that the lie is retold underneath the earliest documented version of the lie.

This would amount to something of a press kit.  If I were a self-respecting member of the MSM, I would be upset at the McCain campaign's implicit claim that it can lie all it wants and there is nothing the media can do about it.  But, I am also probably a very busy member of the MSM with deadlines and such, so I would appreciate a ready reference source related to the lies of the McCain campaign.

Seems to me that TPM is well positioned to create exactly such a press kit.  If anyone wants to get things started, just respond to this post by identifying the lies you know have been made.  Try to keep it limited to relatively noncontroversial lies (e.g. the bridge to nowhere, Obama on sex education, etc.).  The power of the list will lie in the repeated demonstration of blatant indifference to truth, and its force will be diluted if it contains more controversial claims.

Let the tracking begin!

It's a start, but too nasty for the press to pick up. I am thinking of something more professional.

I agree. But honestly, at this point, I think that would look more like packs of playing cards. Packs of playing cards, each deck a certain type of lie. Then people making houses of cards. I'd love the campaign ad!

A deck of cards? Sounds like a great idea, one lie per card?

52 lies? Ought to be do-able... with Bush and Cheney as the jokers, McCain as the Ace of Spades and Palin as the Queen? With their biggest lie printed on thier face card?

Have another McCain card with his first wife as queen, and another with Cindy... so who would be the fourth queen? Whatsername?

FOUR McCains in one deck? Hey, THEY gave us the narrative.. The Straight-Talkin'Maverick, the Rove-managed Machine, the Endless POW and the raging Rumplestiltskin McCaca...

I've never opened my collectible Greg Palast- signed "The Joker's Wild" deck of cards from 2004, but I have seen them all in another deck, and it would be a good model for a deck of McCain Campaign cards based on a web of lies.

This needs some serious thought. But suffice it to say, I'd pay SOME 527 $50 for a deck like that for my collection...

The Deck of Lies... we could make up an internet video game and play poker with Johnny's diferent Johnnies

I have always refered to election time as "The Season of Lies." Never has it been so conspicuous...

A week ago I posted that the Republicans have resorted to Propaganda to win this election, I named a couple of the lies and suggested that we create such a numbered list.

Since the momentum is up, I suggest that one of the "big players" at TPM to start creating this list of the lies with the proofs against them printed in a professional manner, and prominently printed on the front page of TPM. I think this would quickly gather the attention of the mainstream media.

Liementum!

Liecount.com keeps a running count of lies from the convention to the polls. Non-partisan and relying on primary sources, we have daily updates on lies from both campaigns.
