Today I saw Michelle Obama, Jill Biden and Lily Ledbetter!
On a beautiful sunny day here in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the campus of UVA, they came! I got there at 2:30 although the event was posted to start at 4:50, but I wanted a good seat. Turns out I got one of the very few seats, atop a stairwell leading to the Plaza near the bookstore.
The crowd was peppy and excited. I saw kids with T-Shirts that said "I'm too young to vote but not too young to hope;" plenty of Obamaville pins and T-Shirts too. About 20 minutes before the projected start time, some speakers came out and revved up the crowd.
Tom Periello, the Democratic challenger to the ensconced repub Congressman Virgil Goode, reminded us that if Obama wins every state that Kerry won, and also Iowa where he is ahead, he will need 11 more electoral votes to win. Virginia has 13 electoral votes! That got us all going!
Right on time, Lily, Jill, and Michelle came out looking absolutely great! Jill started, and she talked about the fact that the polls do not include those who have never voted before; she talked about college loans, health care, and changing our image abroad. She ended up with a lesson about the Supreme Court, and how the next President will have enormous power in the choices of the next several justices. This segued into Lily Ledbetter.
Lily is the woman who had a very responsible job with Goodyear Tire company in Alabama, and only when she was just about ready to retire did she find out that she had been paid profoundly less than her male cohorts who had the same job descriptions and responsibilities. She sued and won. Goodyear countered, and eventually it went to the Supreme Court, which decided 5/4 for Goodyear because she needed to sue within (I think she said) 6 months of when the salary discrepancy happened -- never mind that Goodyear kept this information from her intentionally. So she lost, and there is no recourse. I kind of had the impression that she used to be a republican because she said she would never have expected to back Obama, but she endorsed him just earlier today. In fact, Obama and Biden co-sponsored a bill to prevent this from happening again -- repubs in the Senate kept it from coming to a vote, but they will try again after the election. She was a good speaker, very down to earth, and I was glad she came.
Michelle, in her elegance, came next. She had us all hooting and responding to her, "Fired UP?" chants. She then went on to talk about college loans, health care, equal pay for equal work, and pulling the troops safely out of Iraq, and using those funds on our own infrastructure. She compared the Obama team's goals for our country to those of "the other team." She never once used McCain's name, and never made disparaging comments; it was a completely positive message, and was just the right length of time too.
The message for today was: Do your part to get people registered to vote (Deadline for Virginia is October 6th). It was a joyous occasion, and as we were leaving, there was one coed standing with a McCain sign. She looked either frightened or like she was going to cry. I went right next to her and said, "You really have a hard job, don't you?" Just beyond her was a group of 3 with signs that said "If you don't get born you can't vote." Pretty lame.
I put those points in just because they were there, but the overwhelming feeling of the day was hope and empowerment, and enthusiasm for this great chance we have to make a difference. Michelle's last words were, "Let's go and change the world!"
That is what we felt like doing as we went back to our homes.

Thank you for sharing that story...the msm is not doing a good job of telling us about things like this, and I think some people get discouraged by not seeing these type of events publicized.
Now take that enthusiasm and win VA for us!

Obamabots may be ludicrously inarticulate and unable to understand simple statistics, but nobody can deny that they really know how to make enemies for their candidate!

Why are you posting this in multiple places?
It wasn't clever the first time.

btw - cold hearted - ALL POLES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. http://www.pollster.com/blogs/how_pollsters_affect_poll_resu.php -- DO YOUR HOMEWORK
and another thing. i find it hard to believe you live in malibu. My best friends and cousins went to palisades hs and they have much more on the ball then you appear to have. Have they lowered the standards there or did you go to on of those private schools where you just do what you want and they give you a piece of paper at end of 4 years.

I think most Malibu-ites go to Malibu High. Palisades High is part of the LAUSD and services Pacific Palisades and (I think) part of Brentwood.

I actually got a chill when Michelle took the stage; I am going in to the Obama headquarters and do whatever they need. My sons are going with me!
I have to have an outlet because I was told at work on Tuesday that I am not allowed to talk about politics any more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fortunately, there are some people I work with who LIKE to talk about politics, current events, and such; no one can stop me from that!

Jan, you and others in VA may be interested in reading this post from former HC supporter and VA resident, Col Pat Lang. He thinks McCain may win the election but has an interesting take on VA and Virginians:
"The Republican ticket teeters on the brink of defeat in Virginia. Why? Virginians are not so foolish as to want to elect an "old coot" who has sold out to the "branding" philosophy of the merchandisers. At the same time, that "old coot" (McCain)subscribes to the political and economic philosophy of one of the most egregious and unpopular administrations in the history of the US.
Are Virginians mad for Obama? No, but they are more unhappy with the national Republican Party and Mr. Bush. pl"

Thanks for th link. Charlottesville is very Democratic, and sometimes I think we can be deceived by all the Obama stickers we see, but I really do believe that the facts are starting to take hold. We are not limiting our voter drives to this area; we are going into Greene County, Fluvanna, and Nelson Counties, and working to let people know that their needs are being -- not just ignored -- but repudiated by the repubs, who see them only as a voting base [as opposed to their financial base, which is the base they cater to].
If repubs could get enough votes from their financial base alone they would leave the wedge issues: abortion, gay marriage, etc; alone because they REALLY don't care about them. They only care about staying in power and they can only do that by scaring people who are afraid to challenge their faux outrage about "family values."

Awesome point. People don't bring this up enough.
The neoconservative republican party doesn't care about their voters as long as they can keep them pulling the lever. They certainly don't really care about any social issues or they would have actually pursued legislation to that effect. The only way the people's needs get met instead of the Fat Cats is by no longer pulling that lever, even for a single election cycle, to show your displeasure and then start working the primaries for a new kind of republican.
I think that message is starting to trickle through the noise, with many conservative writers making the point for Obama.

Jan, you are so lucky to have been there. Those of us in solid "blue" states sometimes wonder what more we can do. In fact, I am traveling to VA on Saturday with Maryland Democrats to do voter registration drives. I actually think Obama can take Virginia. My husband grew up there and his whole military Republican family still lives there, but the cracks are showing. Some of them like Obama and just need the courage to vote for him. Old habits die hard. Thanks for this on the ground story. Very inspiring!!

Fabulous, how fun! And it's great to know that these wonderful ladies are out there getting people on the ground "fired up and ready to go."

Hey, I was there, too! I was to Michelle's left (from her POV, to her right if you're looking at her) about 20 meters away. I thought that Jill Biden and Michelle Obama were great, but that Lily Ledbetter was the star of the show. She really pointed out why no self-respecting woman (or any man who loves their mother, sister, daughter, niece, etc.) can vote for John McCain.

I bet you threw up a little, I know I would have those out of touch Socialist Pigs make me sick! THE whole ideology of Obama wanting to send 845 BILLION to AFRICA! AND look at how American's are suffering and he wants to over tax small businesses! Small business is over 70% of the economy and he does all this while rubbing elbows with the HOLLYWOOD ELITE! WE need a LEADER not some ELITIST out of touch with the AMERICAN VOTER!

So are you planning on writing in Howard, the homeless guy who lives in that cardboard box, then?
Everyone running is an "elitist" in some sense of the word (including Nader, McKinney, Barr et al.), but if you think that Obama is more elitist than any of the others, you've been watching too much propaganda.
I suspect you don't even realize how much the Republicans have been responsible for sending to Africa. Sure, it's often with strings attached, but they're not completely inured to the hardships on that continent. If you think the hardships here compare to those there, that says a lot about how informed you are.

It's absurd hearing the charge of elitism coming from these people.
Obama is right about one thing, they really DO think people are stupid.

you certainly have all the robotic talking points down for McCorps, Pretjene.
if you can't see that owning so many houses that you can't count 'em makes McBush an ELITIST (not to mention all of the other FACTS about him and his Old Boys Network), you are just pathetic and sad. wait, scratch that: you and your ilk are pathetic and sad, regardless.

In my innocence I assumed your post was a tongue in cheek attempt by an Obama supporter to make fun of his opponents by putting their case so badly it made them look silly. Having checked your profile I see that you're sincere.
Why are you so upset? There must be something or somethings about Obama that you see that I certainly do not. I have absolutely no intention of voting for McCain because I disagree with his policies for governing the country. But that doesn't cause me to think he's a bad person, just someone who would like to see the country run differently than would I. I'd probably enjoy his company if we were sitting next to one another on a plane trip.
Why aren't you satisfied with just explaining your opposition to Obama's policies? That might be interesting , and you might convince a few people, tho certainly not me.
For starts you might explain your statement that he intends to send 845 Billion to Africa. Where did you read that? Can you provide a link so the rest of us can read it?
As for Obama himself, he seems like a reasonable sort of person. His book Dreams from My Father
describes a person who-like me with McCain- might be someone whose company you might find enjoyable even tho you'd like to see the country run differently than he. Have you read it? Why not give it a try?
Step back, take a deep breath and just talk to us in a normal way. Better not use the capitals. It makes you seem like someone who is shouting and rather than convincing anyone it causes them just dismiss whatever you write.

Besides the Pew poll of registered voters, not just those that voted in the last 2 elections, shows Obama leading Palin, oops I mean McCain 46% to 44%. Take a peek.

No on second thought I mean Palin.

For everyone's info, I heard a discussion about the discrepancy with the two polls that came out about Virginia today (11% difference!). The poll that had Obama winning had a more representative group of black respondents, and also controlled for the typical people who often respond to polls (women, older people, for example, who have land-lines and are more likely to stay on the phone for a survey). The poll that has McCain winning, which was run by Christopher Newport University didn't control for respondents at all, and had a far lower percentage (sorry I don't recall the numbers) of black people than are represented in our state.
Virginia is going for Obama! Don't lose hope!

Thanks for the report, Jan! I admit I decided not to wrestle with parking and the security restrictions at UVA yesterday, but I wondered how the event went. Sounds like it was just great! I appreciate the first-hand account.
