"They must think you're STUPID"
I absolutely love how Obama is going directly after Palin's claims to be a "reformer". It's exactly the right issue to hit, as it's the one Republican talking point that - successfully sold - could serve to muddle the Democrats' "more of the same" message.
But on a purely visceral level, something about this statement from Obama rang warning bells to me:
"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell
those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is
he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one
of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell
his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in
Washington?""I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.
It's not an overreach in the sense that it's inaccurate. No, I'd say in fact that with the Palin pick McCain has all but announced he's waging a lowest common denominator campaign. And it's really not unfair, either. Palin & Co. are being blatantly deceitful about her record as a "reformer".
But there's just something about his use of the word "stupid" that's gnawing at the back of my mind. I can't exactly identify it. Could it be something that seems inconsistent with the general character of the campaign Barack is running? Could it be the fear of it being turned back around on him?
I really can't say, but it just seems a little... off.

Mencken also said this:
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and
more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day
the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the
White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

They certainly accomplished that during the last two elections, although, I didn't think much of the intellectual gifts of Ronald Reagun, and Nixon, while bright, was reminiscient of Sauron...

It would probably be more effective if he said, "They must think WE'RE stupid."

Nah, I think he hit it... in essence, "I'm here talking to you because I don't think you're stupid. I'm here because I know you -- the american people -- are smart and can see through this BS."
If he had said they must think "I'm" stupid, that would be a problem.

While obama has budies in prison for his work as the great comunity organizer (Risco) The housing project that fleised millions form people.
