The First Debate
While I would agree that the debate was an almost factual draw, I would suggest that McCain achieved his primary psy-ops objective, to Obama's detriment.
The Rovians have always been less interested in facts than in *perceptions* - controling the **framing of an issue**, so that their "talking points" are what prevail - *emotionally* - in an undecided voter's psychic takeaway.
On this score, McCain did very well in keeping Obama on the defensive, not permitting him to effectively tie McCain to the errors of the Bush era, and with Obama far too often starting a response with "I agree with John, but . . ."
Watch for the GOP to come out with a slyly edited spot that makes it look as if Obama's a McCain fan.
Again - on a factual basis, and on stautre, both men did very well, and fought to a virtual draw.
But I would suggest McCain achieved his greater, underlying psychological objective of controlling the discourse, and getting across his underlying message - "I'm experienced, he's wet behind the ears."

I agree with you entirely in relation to the foreign policy section. It's so irritating that Obama has this compulsion always to appease his opposition.
I also got very depressed about how he allowed McCain to get away with persistently saying that Obama doesn't understand. Basically I saw an irascible old man who loves dwelling in the past and patronising the other man. Obama should have called him on it - interjected and said clearly, `I understand very well Senator McCain - I simply disagree with you.
But I think Obama won clearly in the economic section. I was stunned to see the CNN poll of about 500 people had Obama winning the debate overall. Most interestingly, he was streets ahead with women and with older people. So... some comfort there.

You two are missing the whole ppoint of WHO WAS NEEDED TO BE SWAYED. People didn't watch this with a lens. They watched it while dooing their own thing, they watch the stature of the candidates and how they spoke and reacted. PLUS people remember soundbytes more than the entire 90 minutes, THUS "You're wrong You're wrong You're wrong" definitely was the moment of the night. QUICK tell me 3 things McCain said that you remmeber RIGHT AFTER READING THIS POST.
