The “Cool” Progressive Voice of Paul Newman Falls Silent
“What we have here is a failure to communicate.” The iconic line from Cool Hand Luke could just as easily represent the current discourse between Democrats and Republicans. And, while life, truly, is for the living, it is sad to note that as of Saturday one of the major voices for American progressive thinking fell silent for the last time.

Once again the software here truncated my piece. You can read it in its entirety at Huffington Post's OffTheBus, here:

I knew it was coming but very, very sad. A true man of quality who did a lot of good in the world.

yes.
when i logged on this morning my first stop was the huffpo. the news of newman's death was just below all of the post-debate noise. i didn't bother clicking on the article to read the details. i just got up from the table, went out on the porch, lit a cigarette and called my mom. i liked paul newman at first because she did.
when i was old enough to appreciate his movies on my own, i liked newman for his talent, his humor and his artistic choices. learning about his private choices endeared me to him that much more. they are inspirational.
as my mom and i chatted, the mood felt more odd than sad. we didn't really know him afterall. but let's face it, he was huge. he leaves a big whole. the next newman picture i watch will have to be carefully considered.
i'm a little sad now though, as it sinks in. i've a hunch he would have liked to see obama elected president. paul newman deserved to witness that.
