Team McCain Benches Palin?

Is Sarah Palin ready for First String?  You decide.

Think like a Pro Coach might:

Despite chest beating and powerful statements of "Readiness" - Team McCain contends their "pit bull" needs special rules and special protection in a debate with  Joe Biden?

Hmmmm.... Not ready for a "free-wheeling debate."  She needs special protection.  Special Rules.  She's practically in a witness protection program right now - where no one has access to her.  No press conferences.  No free-wheeling events where she has to think on her feet and give the voters a chance to evaluate her thinking.  No video of how she can actually get out there and show us her stuff!

Gotta protect the little lady, they do.

Now that's strange.  Is it true that... She hunts.  She shoots.  She can field-dress a moose.  She pursues vendettas.  Chases down bad books.  Fires people right and left. Makes sure the raped must pay for any rape evidence.  She's one tough cookie!

But she's gotta be protected from a debate.   Hmmmmm.....

For the highest office in the land, the second in command isn't even "ready" for the heat of a debate.

That, right there, should be a powerful sign.  That lack of readiness to debate is the disqualifier!

The lady is ready to be benched
.  She's not first string material.

Maybe not even ready for a first string bench!

Biden is going to tear her up anyway, he didn't care what stipulation she wanted.

But we gotta got the meme out there... to the football jocks, for example, that the lady is not "ready" and "needs protection."

Hugely important not to let this slide. They lied!

"that the lady is not "ready" and "needs protection.""

Hell, that sounds like McBush to me.
Or Bush for that matter.

It's actually Bush, Chaney, McBush, and Palin that are hiding out. ALL of them.

Looks like a lot of blinking to me!

Amen!!!

She does not blink if a job is offered. But she blinks when she actually has to work!

Look back in her history. She's all for gaining power. But nothing when it comes to transparency.

avatar

I think the less back-and-forth interaction between them the better --- fewer chances for her folks to cry "bully!" or "he made me look bad". Trust Gwen Ifil not to let her off the hook and it might be easier for a woman to ask confrontational questions. So, no, I don't thing this plays out to the detriment of the Dems - this lady can fall on her face no matter what the format. BUT, as noted, the fact that they had to ask for special rules is huge and very much worth shouting from the rooftops. ---- The whole way McCain campaign has dealt with her is truly an insult to women.

I see your point. But still.... the meme before the debate needs to be that the "pit bull" cannot fight! "This dog won't hunt!"

Team mcFailin: A confused old guy and a dog that won't hunt!

You called her a dog! I saw it with my own eyes. Not only sexist, but old school! (The poor thing.)

Uhhhhh.... I think she called herself a dog first. Pitbull.... lipstick.

I just followed it to its rightful conclusion.

Interesting. So you advise that rather than RAISE expectations for Palins performance, we try and drive them even lower? I always thought that traditional political strategy called for exactly the opposite.

"With all this intense preparation..."

"... OF COURSE Palin is going to hit it out of the park."

"...We EXPECT Palin to hit it out of the park!"

"...How could she NOT hit it out of the park."

"...Even my stupid cousin would be able to hit it out of the park."

And then throw in a few "Damn Biden sure does ramble when he's supposed to be on point - I hope he doesn't screw this up!" type comments for good measure.

Seriously, she's 100% devoted to prepping this one event and has rules stacked in her favor. She should be able to SHINE now if she ever will. I say focus on how well she SHOULD do under the circumstance - not what the circumstance says about her abilities in general.

avatar

Sad fact is McCain was able to weasel a deal for Debate-Lite. I suspect the questions will be a walk in the park. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to learn she gets a list questions in advanced that may be asked of her.

I resent the special treatment being given to her! Hillary went to-to-toe with nine men for the Democrat ticket and got raked over the coals, but still held on. She has shown she has true grit.

Palin is taking advantage of being a woman to get special treatment. In the real world that doesn't happen.

avatar

I wonder if Putin and or The Terrists will agree to the same debate rules with the delicate flower?

avatar

For the debate, Palin will be advised to go after Biden for his remarks about paying taxes being patriotic.

McCain and Palin are puppets.

Obama and Biden are running against Rovian Bush operatives.

So let's not underestimate them.

I agree. But pro athletes who play dirty are disqualified!

Red Cards for both!

Neither plays by the rules. And that is something we should also shout from the housetops!

avatar

Biden's statements about those asked to pay more (than they have been w/ Bush tax cuts) will sit a little differently after this financial crisis --- if those fat cats are going to be bailed out by the rest of us, darn well they should pay more taxes!!!

I don't know about Moose but, I know Biden can field dress a Republican!

Excellent!

If one portrays herself ask a pitbull,
shouldn't she be treated as one?
She can not have it both ways.

(Is it just me, or does anyone else hear "Green Acres" in the background everytime she speaks?)

I'm in total agreement. Indeed, there should be rules to the campaign game. And whatever they might be, the mcFailin Team has struck out, fouled out. They should be called OUT!

Zsa-Zsa Gabor for president! (Or was it Eva?)

One reason the Obama/Biden campaign *may* have agreed to let Palin play by "beginners rules" in a professional match is that Biden will likely mop the floor with her regardless of what rules are used. Then the Obama/Biden campaign can rightfully say that they beat this "experienced" candidate with one arm tied behind Biden's Back.

Really this was a shameful admission on McCain's part of something I knew from day one: Palin isn't qualified. If McCain had selected any man for the VP slot, this wouldn't be happening.

Maybe you want to revise to: had mcShame selected a "qualified person." Could have been a man or a woman! But qualified.

Or even Zsa-Zsa Gabor.

One family, having had 2 Obama signs stolen is out to catch a thief:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/obama-sign-cctv-1

Streaming video of their Obama sign!

I'm not sure what I'd rather see. Palin trying to talk her way around the questions and sounding more and more like Miss South Carolina, or Palin standing there in stunned silence, those big doe eyes filling up with tears.

Biden should surrender most of his time to her - just let her keep talking because the more she talks, the more people will see what she is.

avatar

Careful on that "the more she talks, the more people will see what she is." I think George Lakoff is right, different people see/hear different things. (see
df) Sounds like you and I see the same horrifying thing (because as my friend keeps telling me I am just too linear), but a lot of people respond to her on a gut level regardless of the ridiculous blather she spews.

Sadly... correct.

Sarah Palin Meets with Afghan President Karzai (Transcript)

"Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will meet next week with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in New York, on the sidelines of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly, according to Afghan officials in Washington."--Washington Post

TRANSCRIPT:

Palin: Oh, Mr. President, it is such a pleasure to meet you, you're the first head of state that I have had the opportunity to meet--which is more than many Vice Presidents--and I'm so glad that my first one is an Afghani.

You know, in Trig's class there was a little Afghani? He was the child of one of the oil executives, and he was so cute, with his little turban runnin' around, everyone just loved him, and felt for him...

Karzai: Yes.

Palin: And everyone knew that we just had to defend him and keep him free and that's why I think that with a Palin/McCain...

Palin Aide: (looking up from clipboard) McCain/Palin.

Palin: ...McCain/Palin ticket, we can make sure of that, if we have to attack Russia, even, I mean, to keep people free at home, just like we want to keep our people free. We have so much in common! I know you have the problem with the poppies, and I understand so well, Mr. Karzai, because we have the same problem with the crystal meth in Wasilla? And I said "Look, we've got to shake this up!" and then that's just what I said, I said 'Look, let's just see what we have in common with these guys!" And that's just what you could do with the Taliban, Mr. Karzai. They've already so moral, and they want people to live by the straight and narrow, and they've got the newspapers sayin' and the schools doin' lots of the right things. They just need to get some of the right ideas, and pray to the right Lord. And, if they don't understand, we still have the weapons left over from Iraq, and then we can't blink, we can't blink, can we, Mr. Karzai?

Karzai: (Looks at Palin silently without moving his head. Pauses.). Blink?

Palin: Right. The thing is, we just have to hit the ground runnin', Mr. Karzai. That's what I do. A few weeks ago I didn't even know what a Vice President doesclock so you know just how much time you have left until you finish it. I tell you, Mr. Karzai, it's such a motivating influence on my staff, the good ones, anyway, they know what they're supposed to finish and when, they hear me sayin' "Look at the clock, people, look at the clock, and know what you have left to finish..."

Karzai: Yes.

Palin: And so I said to my husband, Todd--I call him the "First Dude"--Do you have that word 'Dude' here in Afghanistan?--maybe it's like "Khan" or "Emir" or somethin'?--I said to him, 'Todd, we have to take a look at what's happenin' in Afghanistan--before McCain called or any other thing happened--' cause I saw that Russia was right across from us, and then right next to that you have all the 'Stans--(counts cross fingers) Kyrgyzstan, oh, what's the others?--well, you are aware of them, of course, Mr. Karzai (laughs)...

Karzai: (Nods)

Palin: And if we don't let other people know of what I'm aware of then the world won't change, Mr. Karzai. I know we have the same goals even if we don't have the same God yet...(aide touches Palin on shoulder, whispers). 'Even', not 'yet', I meant 'same God even, Mr. Karzai, and my point is, we can't let others stop our choice, which is freedom for those who deserve it, and that's why I know a Palin/McCain...

Palin Aide: (reaching over to touch shoulder)

Palin: Stop! (brushing aide's hand off)...McCain/Palin ticket will do just what you want, Mr. Karzai...

Second Palin Aide Approaches: It's time for your next appointment, Gov. Palin.

Palin: It was so good meeting you, President Karzai, and all of your other people, it was so good meeting you too! Shalom! (waves, exits).

Karzai: (to his aide, in Pashto): She makes the last one look like the Grand Mufti.
