Senator Obama -- We Need to See Your Human Side Sir
Senator Barack Obama, you need to show people where you stand on issues such as health care, labor law reforms and other policies affecting working people. You need to visit unemployment offices, union halls and soup lines.
Senator, do you or your family ever remember being so broke that you ate macaroni and cheese with water because you couldn’t afford to buy milk? Do you remember those beans and cornbread or hotdog and bean (if you could afford it) nights? Have you ever experienced milk toast or eating leftovers for days on end? Did you ever go to bed hungry sir?
Do you or your family remember wrapping yourselves up with extra blankets wearing double socks and clothes to keep warm because you couldn’t afford to keep the heat too high or you didn’t have any at all? Do you remember sharing a bath tub of water to take a bath so as to save on the water bill?
Senator, have you ever gotten a ‘last warning’ post card in the mail telling you that your electricity or water will soon be cut off soon if you don’t pay your bill by such and such date? Have you ever missed a credit card payment or rent payment?
Have you ever gone to a doctor in need of medical attention but felt you were treated differently because you couldn’t pay the bill or had no insurance to help pay for those x-rays?
Have you ever watch your child suffer from an illness because you couldn’t afford to take them to a doctor? Have you ever had them come to you and say daddy I’m hungry?
When you were growing up with your mom Senator, did any of these things happened that I mention? Well sir, if they did, you need to ‘re-live’ them in front of Americans. They need to see that ‘you too’ have suffered in the past.
I’ve seen you talk about your and Michelle’s college bills and how you spent years paying them off. That’s a start sir; but you need to tell us more. We need to see the bread and butter issues sir.
We know about your being raised by a single mom and grandparents; but what happened during that time sir? Did you experience any hardships during that time? You mentioned the death of your mom during the convention. Can you tell us a bit more of what happened?
While I'm sure you have gone through some of this hardships having been raised in a single parent environment - others aren't aware of it sir.
John McCain and his campaign have successfully shown a ‘human’ side of McCain by telling about his POW days in detail (how he couldn’t feed himself and his fellow inmates did it for him, the daily beatings, etc...).
Senator Obama that’s the part of your story we’ve not seen. You need to help Americans see ‘you’ as a human being and not just as a skilled politician.
We need to relate to you sir – what hardships have you endured?

A great post, Connie. Rec'd. Obama seems too robotic or aloof to many people. His personal narrative is full of names and places, but few details about the day-to-day conditions he grew up in and little if any any emotional weight.
Obama also needs to show more emotional investment in his policies. He needs to act like he gives a damn who wins. Because if he doesn't, why should anyone else?

Oh I disagree with part of your statement. Obama shows a lot of desire to win or he wouldn't be where he is today.
He's just not the 'actor' that more politicians are. McCain's bad at this too. It was his surrogates that made his case about his POW suffering. Palin is good and so is Biden in showing 'emotion'.
I don't think he needs to necessary SHOW emotion (cry or something) -- he just needs to tell more personal stories about his OWN life so that voters see he RELATES to them.

I think the Obama campaign has done extraordinary so far, but I do wish he could find a way to make more of an emotional connection with people and less of a political one.
While his advertising presents facts about how bad McCain or Bush would be for the American people, the tone of the advertising lacks humanity.
Remember when he, Michelle and their kids were interviewed on the fourth of July? It was so natural and it humanized Obama, more so than any other campaign event so far.
Does that mean he should talk more specifically about his own hardships and those of the people he's met on the campaign trail?
I don't know.

I think it does.
Just as Bush and Hillary's tears CONNECTED with voters -- Obama's life growing up alone with a mom or grandparents help him connect.
Did you note (the media didn't) that he kind of choked for the first time I've seen him - when he mentioned his mom dying (during the convention). That's some of what he needs to show.
But more importantly, they need to know he went to bed hungry or was on food stamps or cried for his mom when she left him.
Reading bedtime stories to his kids, changing diapers, etc..
People buy the National Enquire and Star magazines for a reason. They want (rarely admit it) PERSONAL information.
