Senator Obama; Call McCain's Bluff by Offering to have the VP Debate Tomorrow.

avatar

Make McCain sweat. There is no need for Sarah Palin to be in Washington, unless she is bringing her Kenyan Preacher to protect the Treasury from Witchcraft.

Force McCain to either show up. or have the VP debate instead. Do it now. that way all four debates can still be held on schedule, you are just swapping the VP date, and putting it first. This is the best time for it, since Sarah Palin is not even up to taking reporters questions.

Squeeze McCain now. Do it Senator.

He's ignoring Palin as he should.

I am talking about Biden debating her, not Obama. The VP debate is what I want held tomorrow, before Palin and McCain knows what hit them.

Biden does not need the prep. He did great during the Iowa debates.

Obama has to counter McCain's challenge. This is the best way to turn the tables on McCain and gain the upper hand.

I think the two choices are just fine:

1. McCain doesn't show and Obama states his arguments as agreed to previously, and then returns to the problems of the day (just like he will have to do as President.

2. McCain shows up madder than a wet hen.

Although plenty of pundits are falling in line with the McCain message, it is patently obvious to anyone with a brain that McCain is desperate.

No way is Palin going to debate early. On MSNBC last night someone said they wanted to move the VEEP debate until after the election! Ha!

Luckily for all of us, Obama never takes advice from morons like "liam."

Writing the whole post in boldface is an especially lame-o touch, even for one of the dumbest commenters on TPMCafe.

"Let's have the VP debate right now, in one minute, because unlike Senator McCain, who is racing around Washington trying to save the nation, Senator Biden is just sitting around with his thumb up his ass, looking for some way to pass the time."

Harharharhar!!!

Obamabots! They're only a problem for the rest of us, because none of them ever gets within ten miles of Obama.

"liam" has inspired me with yet another "liam"-style idea for the VP debates:

Joe Biden offers to debate with a handicap!

Obama could say to McCain "My VP is so much smarter than your VP that my VP will debate your VP dead drunk. Joe Biden will consume not less than 14 shots of Old Bushmill within two hours before the debate, and he will additionally hold a standard-size cue-ball between his lips while debating! If that's not good enough, my VP is so much smarter than your VP that instead of actually speaking, Joe Biden will fart his speeches in Morse code! And if Sarah Palin is still too chicken to debate a dead drunk Joe Biden who is farting in Morse code instead of actually speaking, then the voters will know that maybe she wants a little more time to prepare for the debate, and that will be a very big deal!"

His true motive in all this is to push the vp debate back so ms. sarah has more time to cram. Or perhaps he's setting a precedent so that when some campaign-made AK crises pops up, ms sarah can run home to help there instead of debating.

The McCain campaign has already announced that Governor Palin may suspend her campaign as well. It's important for the Governor of Alaska to rush back to Washington during this important time and, well... do important Governor of Alaska stuff.

Please,oh please,oh please,oh please.

avatar

A very good idea for Obama to call that bluff, esp. since we now know that a big fat slice of the purpose of this whole gambit is to give Sarah Palin an extension on her homework.

If you want this message to get through, then you must click recommend, and you must email the Obama campaign to push for it. Thanks.

Dave Letterman recommended something along those lines when he got stood up last night. When the starting quarterback is unable to play, you don't call the whole game off -- you put in the second string QB. Thats what his VP pick Sarah Palin is THERE for, isn't it? To fill in if McCain is ever unavailable.

So the logical thing to do, if McCain and Obama have to be in D.C. for the bailout, would be to have the VP debate instead.

A fine idea.

I love this idea. Force their hand. Because I'm pretty confident Biden could be ready to debate tomorrow. Palin? Well, it sure would be interesting to see.

I disagree. Obama has already said he can multi-task. He can talk to anyone who needs to talk to him in minutes. If he cedes to McCain's back-stabbing ploy he will show weakness. I think Obama is doing this just right. He is showing strength and resolve and leadership.

He should not follow McCain into this cowardly hole just to save John's ass. John McCain has dug himself into a no-win situation; why not let him keep digging? If he shows up tomorrow night totally pissed off, and not having prepared for a whole day, how do you think he's gonna do?

Obama shouldn't do it because it smacks too much of McCainite dramatism, and he doesn't want to get dragged down by sharing a stage with that disaster.

But it's a great question for a reporter to ask -- if McCain is so vital in DC (smirk), why can't he send P to do it, since it's just possible she might have to stand in in a pince if he wins.

I tried to post this blog last night, but TPM blogging was down for upgrades.

Here is something that I just posted, that exposes McCain's excuse for canceling the debate to be completly absurd, and without any merit.

Read and click it up, so poor old addled John gets the good news about how he will have no reason to miss the debate. Thanks.

When is McCain going to go on Letterman with Palin - I would like to see Keith Olbermann decide to show up that night - crash the party.

avatar

Great minds thing alike? I've been thinking Obama ought to call his bluff by suggesting swapping the two debates ever since I saw a profile of all the work and expense that the University has had to expend to mount the debate.

Nothing would get McCain to the debate like suggesting Palin & Biden should take that slot!

avatar

Fran,

Exactly, and he would never agree to sending Palin up against Biden tomorrow night. I knew that, when I wrote the blog, but it would put McCain in a bind, Obama would have forced him to show up, or not also allow Palin to debate Biden, which would McCain look like a complete fraud. That is a win win for Senator Obama. I sure wish Obama would come out and propose it. He should force McCain to return serve.

He just gave a news conference and he's not taking your advice, said that he expects to debate McCain in Miss.

Palin's destroying herself. No need to call her out.

avatar

You do not get it. I am not trying to destroy Palin. I am trying to destroy McCain, by exposing the fact that he is afraid to let Palin debate Biden now.

Credit Where Credit Isn't Due: McCain and Bush's Kabuki Theatre

Now we know why McCain hired the Bush contingent.

It emerged in the White House briefing today that McCain called Bush and asked him to initiate a meeting today at 4 pm at the White House, putatively for him to "deal with" the crisis.

That is, McCain asked Bush to help him create an trifecta: To try to lend some credence to McCain's desperate assertion that a suspension of his campaign is necessary, in effect either avoiding a debate in which he would face critical questions about his stance on the economy or marching in claiming "victory"; attempting to co opt the financial crisis thereby trying to put an end to his plummeting in the polls created by his flailing positions on the economy--perhaps best reflected by his statement days ago that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong"; and perhaps buying more time for Sarah Palin after her embarrassing photo op at the UN yesterday, by moving her debate forward as well.

Here's how it happened, according to Q and A at the WHB:

McCain emailed Bush asking for today's meeting. Now, one reasonably might ask, why is today such a necessity for McCain, if his interest is solely the national good?

Because it is before the debate. McCain hopes to stage a meeting at the White House, thereby, with Bush's cooperation, lending plausibility to his claim to need to suspend his campaign. Then, if Republicans, in their own electoral interest, can be persuaded to come to agreement, before the debate, he would claim--in an act of utter stage management--to have "resolved" the crisis. Thereby hoping to take the heat off on his past careening stances and sliding polls and staunch the bleeding on the polls--before the debate.

This is Kabuki Theatre masquerading as substance--no different than what we saw at the U.N. yesterday.

It is utterly stage managed, utterly cynical, and utterly unrelated to the substantive deliberation necessary to actually resolve these matters on the merits and for our nation's future, rather than for short-term and desperate political advantage.

These occurrences are equally important for what they indicate about McCain's governing style as they are for their impact upon democratic process: impulsive acts that rely on drama and theatrical posture rather than substantive reasoning and long-term deliberation; a strong willingness to sacrifice substantive reasoning, deliberative process, and even prior structures and agreements to immediate political need; an attempt to reach outcomes through last minute stage management rather than substantive argument.

These should create deep concern for anyone who wishes for a change in governmental process from the past eight years.

We have an economy, rather than a campaign, to rescue. Putting nation before politics means putting all attempts to resolve it before political attempts to co opt it--and to move towards one's commitments, rather than towards a more immediate and short-term salvation.

I am beginning to wonder if they needed to get McCain out of the debate because he was not able to retain any facts, and they were afraid to let him get exposed to the nation. He has been acting as though he does not remember what he has said from one hour to another, and often denies that he said what he actually did less than a day before.

Is there a video of when McCain walked out to announce his suspension. I have never seen him look so old and worn down looking. It was the most haggard I have ever seen him.

Palin will need to rush back to Alaska and ride her moose to the Russian front. There she will stand guard with her assault rifle lest Pootin take advantage of us in our crisis.

avatar

I agree. If Biden and Obama both show up either one of them could take on whoever shows. If the VP debate is delayed it will never be rescheduled. All of the mechanism is in place for Friday. All networks have their schedules set. The most logical thing to do (short of having the presidential debate as scheduled) is to swap the VP debate with the presidential debate.

Luckily for all of us, Obama never takes advice from morons like "liam."

Writing the whole post in boldface is an especially lame-o touch, even for one of the dumbest commenters on TPMCafe.

Pay no attention folks. Freeze just had to vent because I took him to task for posting a blog, where he quotes Bin Laden, and then lauds Bin Laden for what he said.

A brilliant idea! They definitely should have done that. It would've been great to watch McCain explain why, well, that just isn't possible. (Sarah? Oh, she's busy securing Alaska's borders. In case one of those rogue CEO's tries to flee to Russia.)
