Scurrilous Anti-Islam DVD arrived with the Sunday Paper!
We live in a battleground state. We receive the New York Times daily. This morning, along with our Sunday Times - right in the middle where it was folded double - was a DVD, Obsession. This film was nothing more than bigotry. A scurrilous attack on Islam, the movie equated Hitler and the Nazis with Muslims.
It cannot be accidental that this despicable advertisement for bigotry invaded our home right after the republican convention, where footage of 911 was shown, followed by the dancing of convention goers.
I can only surmise that the republicans are planning next to equate Barack Obama with Muslims - once they have laid the the groundwork for connecting Islam with the Nazis.
I have hit a low point, folks. Even my spouse, the citizen of a European country, described this movie as the "most hateful movie I have ever seen." I simply have a hard time believing this actually happened to us. We're not Muslims, but how many Muslim families received a DVD like this one today?
I have sent a letter to the Editor of the Times. I copied Josh Marshall. Now I'm putting out the word to you.
What do we do now?
I am speechless!

Call the NY Times. Burn up their phone lines until they report on their own money-grubbing ad department.

Abd call every other media you can think of to put the boot to the Times until they and the rest of the press expose the wretched cretins behind the DVD.

I wrote a letter to the editor and copied Josh Marshall. Their subscription offices are closed at the moment. But indeed I will certainly phone them in the morning!

John Prine advised in the 1960s to blow up the TV and throw away the papers. In this day and age, with the internet, there is no reason to financially support the for profit media.

I made clear in my letter to them, that should this ever happen again, I will discontinue my subscription.

Good lord....I was disgusted by the RNCC 9/11 video and presentation. Having lost friends in 9/11 and use of it for politics is BS...this is absurd and disgusting

I am sorry for your loss of friends due to 9/11. (thanks for your comment, John, and I was so rattled and steamed last night I didn't clearly read all of your comment at the time you wrote it)
What a nation we've come to. Very sad. Deplorable!

To be honest it is possible the Times is not "behind" this. Because the same delivery people deliver a number of different types of papers. So I'll give them the benefit of the doubt - but still, it begs all decency that anyone would use the newspaper delivery to sneak bigotry into one's home.

I hope that you will contact media sources until someone pays attention and uncovers the source of the DVD and get a copy of to them so that they can out the people doing this.
It should be shamed in public in a massive way across the country as it may be attempted in other places.

We've now looked carefully at the material that came with it.
Source of the ad, which indeed the NY Times and newspapers in battleground states accepted to be placed in their papers:

What do Muslims have to do with Obama?

As you surely know... it should have no connection whatsoever!
This is bigotry against Muslims!

I'm headed for the largest local Mosque this morning!

NYT has a page about it.

It appears that the movie came out in 2005 so it's odd that it was in your paper today. Smells like there is something odd behind this dvd being put out now 3 years after the movie was made.
I've never heard of it until now.
Right-wingers, as we all know, love using fear as a tactic. Too bad they don't use that all that hateful energy into finding Bin Laden rather than denigrating all Muslims.
All the Muslims I know are secular and they all find fundamentalism repulsive to say the least.

I've now been to the local mosque with all the info. Apparently this was only delivered to those who take home delivery of the Times.

I live in northern Ohio (between Cleveland and Akron) and just received this garbage in the mail on Friday 09/26/08. A coworker who lives in Bay Village, a western suburb of Cleveland, also received it on Wednesday or Thursday. Looks like they are bombarding our area with this crap.
