Republican for Obama

avatar

A few days ago I posted a letter to my Republican father about why I was voting for Obama. Several friends suggested I put it on a web site, along with citations for some of the points being made. Here it is:
A Letter to My Republican Father

good letter. thanks

Good letter. Have you had a response from your father? I would be interested in hearing it if you have.

The last line gives me the sense his father passed away.

A great letter. I truly hope it has the desired effect on your father.

Thank you. Folks from both parties ought to put as much thought into their vote

Vader, I was thinking that too. My father grew up during the Great Depression and had to quit school in the 7th grade to help support his family. It a common thing in those day. He never voted Republican. He always held that they were the party of the wealthy and big business and has nothing to offer a working man like himself. Today, except for the evangelical strain running through the party, at its very core, it's still the party of the wealthy and big business.

I think that if my dad were alive he would vote for Obama this year. Not because he's the Democratic candidate, but because he's right for this country. I too think Obama is an intelligent, thoughful man, but this nothing new to me. I live in Illinois and very proudly vote to send him to the US Senate in 2004. I proudly voted for him in the primary and look forward to voting for him in November.

David, you should send this in to newspapers as a letter to the editor. Especially to papers in swing states.

I have read that the McCain campaign is encouraging supporters to send in LTEs, going so far as to provide them with a letter and having them sign their names to it.

We need to do the same. Especially when it comes to being "personally comfortable" with Obama.

In the rust belt states the problem that people have with Obama is that they are just "not sure he is one of them." It is up to us to remind people that he is not some outsider; he is the product of a single mother and a perfect example of the American Dream.

Obama is exactly what the Right Wing always talks about; he is a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps success story. He is someone who has worked incredibly hard and has proved that we can make it if we try.

It is time to remind the rest of the country that this is so.

Thanks for sharing your letter David.

Kudos, David, on a thoughtful, even-tempered, eminently persuasive missive. This needs to be widely shared, and with a Republican parent of my own in dire need of a wake-up call, I intend to do my part.

Not only is your letter eloquent, by giving us the link we saw it as you would have wanted your dad to see it - as if on beautiful stationery.

What a lovely tribute to your dad and gift to us.

Thank you.
