Recommend if you want TPM to allow us to preview our posts before submitting

avatar

Taking this step shouldn't be a difficult task for the owners of this website.

Also, look at the readers' post and see how many duplicate threads there are: too many. We also need the ability to delete threads or edit them for the first 5 minutes or so after hitting the submit button, as it's done in other civilized blogs.

Comments (40)

Duplication is not a problem. I don't recommend advance review. Deleting a comment which contains an unacceptable (e.g. racist ,sexist etc.)remark would of course be OK but can be done after the fact.

All I want them to do is fix the goddamn posting mess. Every freaking time, we get errors

Recommend if you want pigs to fly, and butter on both sides of your toast.

Lamest. Site. Ever.

Are you out of your fucking mind?

I can't believe you posted this.

What happened to the avatars? I liked being able to use them to "fast forward" when rereading a thread...

Okay now, I only hit send once...I hate this!

Thanks, for raising that question. I have been wondering if the missing avatars was due to some problem with my browser.

It was the only way their lame ass system administrator could figure out how to lighten the load on each page. That is why PHP is horrible language for an enterprise-class website, unless your web servers are spot on.

I want to know who the hell is in charge of technology at that company, if anyone.

This problem is very solvable if Josh had bothered to ask me. Come on, Josh. Pony up some cash and hire me to design a real website for you and help you find the right vendor to implement it. Your design and style sheets are perfect. Should be able to re-skin an off-the-shelf CMS in a week. Minor modifications. A couple more weeks for data migration and testing.

Presto chango.

A brand new site for October when the traffic will really pick up.

Same. Figured my computer was acting up again.

This thing doesn't work now - how can we ask for more applications?

I can't barely post -

TPMcafe is seriously broken... "file not found", "internal server error 500", long delays with no feedback, leading to multiple duplicate posts. Needs to be fixed. Being able to edit what you've posted would be nice, but first make the freakin' site work. Please.

I"ve tried to post on sites that are screwed up like this and have preview - o god - you don't want to make this worse and it does.

First they came for the edit function and I said nothing.

Next they came for the server and I said nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing. Nothing, I tell you!

Then they came for the avatars and there was no one left to post.

Recommend this post? I'd troll-rate if I could.

You want someone to review thousands of posts a day? For what? Toeing the latest line? Ideological purity? Grammar?

Sorry, but if you haven't noticed, we've got a little Big Brother problem now in this country. I don't need any more of it, from any side of the political spectrum.

He means preview, not review. As in, see what your post will look like before posting. DailyKos, all Blogger blogs, etc. have this simple function.

Yes, it's an excellent idea, and would improve an already outsanding site. (Not too many blog-type sites have won a Polk. TPM rocks.)

They're working on it. They have to move to new, bigger, servers first. Then, we get a preview function.

Though we DID used to have one on the old TPM site. Bring back TPM Classic!

And our avatars!

Please feel free to check out

It has previews, create your own polls, edits avatars etc...

AND I REALLY NEED THE HELP.

We hear you. Avatars are gone because the servers are overloaded (we had twice as much traffic yesterday as a normal good day (apparently there's some campaign people are really interested in?).

On preview, believe me we're working on it. Once we're on new servers (Sept. 15th is the move date), we're full steam ahead on new blogging tools, new blogs, and new community tools.

Have you looked at the traffic "shape"? It seems unlikely that a campaign would accidentally overload your server (how many staffers would be checking the blogs?), but it's possible that a campaign (or more likely a supporter) would instigate an amateurish denial-of-service attack.

Without knowing anything about TPM in particular my assumption would be that it's just Sarah Palin. Kos claims that

In the middle of Labor Day weekend, I had the highest traffic day of my existence. This is higher traffic than the 2004 federal election. Higher traffic than the 2006 general election. Usually on long weekends, people disappear. They hang out with family and friends. No one wanted to do anything but [talk about] Sarah Palin.

I notice your ads load just fine.

LOL, maybe that's what he meant.

Thank you.

Improvements such as those you have suggested would be most welcome.

Thanks.

The improvements you suggest would be most welcome. I hope they are feasible

Greetings folks. We already have a new editing system for reader blogs that will allow preview, more robust editing and a lot more. We're hoping to roll that out along with a new community and discussion following dashboard at the end of this month.

On avatars, they're not gone. We had to take them down temporarily for the following reason. TPM's outgrown our current server arrangement. And we're currently having a new system built at a company called logicworks. We're scheduled to have that ready for hand off by the 15th of this month. However, over the last week approximately our traffic has literally doubled. That combined with a flood of commenting has threatened to shut down our whole system. Without going into too much detail, a post that has 600 or 700 comments forces the servers to call that many avatars and that caused the temporary outage many of you noticed on Tuesday afternoon.

So we temporarily took down the avatars to keep the system up and running and we're hoping to have them back by next week. The flood of traffic is also responsible for the errors and double posting a lot of you have been seeing.

So, we know the problems. And we're moving as quickly as we can to solve them.

LOL! Even Josh posted twice.

That's beautiful.

Josh, thanks for the explanations. I think it would help a lot if you'd post this comment to the front page.

Awesome. I was hoping that something was in the works. There are way too many tools on the market to suffer with the current system any longer.

TPM is an excellent website and number one in my favorites. I support preview of comments, not as an anti-free speech vehicle but out of a desire to maintain a professional, informative source that appeals to a wide audience.

Andrew & Josh -- Thanks for the updates on move date and the additional details about TPM's performance issues. Much appreciated. Also, that was a brilliant move on Josh's part to demonstrate his humanity by posting twice.

Wow,t his is wild. THe site refused to acknowledge my password. I kept getting a message that it was the wrong password. (BTw, TPM never wrote me acknowledging what my password was or my username.) I tried clicking from the link that TPM sent me when it verified my email address. I got an error message that way too! Now I see that I'm logged on after all! wtf?

I've been a TPM reader for a long, long time but never posted until this week because I hate registering for things. Finally this week I signed up. My whole experience posting and using the site has been a hassle. Error messages up the wazoo, then my posts appear anyway. Everywhere double posts (what a waste of time to scroll through these). As someone else said above, the site sucks. Everything about it sucks, the layout/look of the site, navigating, posting, EXCEPT the original reporting. All the supposed bells and whistles are just annoying. Frankly, I'd rather just read Josh's thoughts in straight blog form ala Andrew Sullivan's The Dish. I used to spend a lot of time here but now I find myself on other sites.

The problem I consistently have with blog posting (Opera 9.xx) is that when I log in, the ensuing page at the top left reads, "There was an error: Unknown user," and the entire left column underneath it is blank. From there, I use the browser's Back button to return to the original page, where now I'm shown as logged in and the comment box shows.
