Played by his own party
I’ve heard a lot of talk about McCain really wanting Lieberman and being told no by his handlers, then sticking it to his advisors by choosing Palin.
But what if we’re actually seeing something more Rovian?
The Republican high command really wanted Romney (or Giuliani), but were thwarted by democracy. What if McCain’s handlers are steering McCain into a place where he’ll end up abdicating the nomination because delegates (mysteriously) turn against him during the roll call? McCain’s increasingly erratic behavior is not news to the average democratic voter, but may need a bit of re-enforcing among Republican types.
Could it be that McCain is being manipulated with deliberately bad advice?
Could it be that Cheney/Rove are trying to steal nomination by accentuating the failings of McCain thus demonstrating to the Republican electorate that they’d be better off with a different slate? one chosen by the high command?
If we look at the folks who were pushing Palin, folks like Limbaugh and Kristol who are pretty clearly tied to the neo-con talking points machine and were loudly against McCain until they were for him, it’s not hard to whip up a nifty little conspiracy theory for the swift-boating of the Republican candidate by his own “advisors”.
