Ooooooh, Barracuda~ Sounding the RNC Grace-Note

I'm still trying to figure out the "take away message" of this week's convention. I know there had to be one. Right? I'm thinking it might have been hidden in that song they played there at the end: Heart's "Barracuda". I'm sure it's one of John McCain's favorites, because it came out in 1977 and he lost the ability to raise new music to his ears while he was a POW. (Did you know that John McCain was a POW? He doesn't like to mention it.)

Anyway, since they chose to end their convention with it, I thought the words of Barracuda might provide some insight into what the McCain/Palin ticket is all about.

So this ain't the end -
I saw you again today
I had to turn my heart away
Smiled like the sun -
Kisses for real
And tales - it never fails!

You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have me down down down down on my knees
Now wouldn't you, barracuda?

Back over time we were all
Trying for free
You met the porpoise and me
No right no wrong, selling a song-
A name, whisper game.

If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooh, barracuda?

"Sell me, sell you," the porpoise said
Dive down deep down to save my head
You... I think you got the blues too.

All that night and all the next
Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools - silly fools!

If the real thing don't do the trick
No, you better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooohhhh, barra barracuda.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.

Okay, so I get the part about the "lying so low in the weeds," and the "better make up something quick." And the part about the "western pools - silly fools!" seems obvious enough, I guess.

But who's the porpoise? Am I the only one who doesn't know? Is it Rick Davis? Steve Schmidt? Mark Salter? Who is the porpoise???

I'll give McCain/Palin this: their theme song is at least as befuddling as their platform.

Oh, I just saw the "Morning Roundup" link to Heart's cease and desist request. I guess Barracuda won't be a permanent addition to the McCain/Palin jukebox.

Those two just can't catch a break, can they?

Heart is pissed too. They asked them to stop using it and the RNC just blew it off.

Check it out:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

This is the best part:

Right-leaning pop musicians can be hard to come by, leaving few safe choices for Republicans on the campaign trail. Political Machine pointed out a few GOP-friendly stars whose songs could possibly be cued up without objection: Donny Osmond, Ted Nugent, Gene Simmons, Kid Rock and Wayne Newton. (PopEater respectfully suggests "Cat Scratch Fever" by Sweaty Teddy)

This post fits right in with one by Deanie Mills:

They both deserve to be on the rec'd list.

Once again, frankly, the republicans have initiated "the war on sanity." They deliberately mix things up, tie our neurons into knots, make it difficult for people to think clearly, and then urge us all - in some kind of hypnotically soothing voice: Be afraid. Be very afraid. Only we can save you. Choose the barracuda - she's a mom.
