Obama Retrieved My Vote. Palin Reopened My Wallet.

avatar

Two months ago I was so embittered by Obama's lack of support for our
constitutional rights that I withdrew my $450 donation to his campaign,
removed myself from all of the campaign mailing lists, and vowed to
myself that I was not going to vote this November.

Last week the DNC, and in particular Obama's speech, touched me so greatly that my vote for him was restored.

On Tuesday, Joe Lieberman touched me so greatly that I decided to
start calling every state I can on every weekend from now until the
election passes.

On Wednesday, Sarah Palin reopened my wallet and restored my full-throated support to Obama.

I listened as Sarah Palin, without establishing who she is and what she
stands for, insulted community organizing as a trivial activity. Rather
than say what she was for, she let us know that she was against
anything Obama.

Instead of going after the specifics of Obama's proposals, Palin
attacked Obama's patriotism. Instead of answering the critics charges
of graft and corruption in Alaska during her watch as Mayor of Wasilla
and Governor, she attacked the media's right to do its job. Instead of
trying to win over the vast swath of independents and women who have
already been put off by the scandals and the lack of vetting by the
McCain campaign, she appealed directly to the base in a speech that can
be best described to these ears as bitter, partisan, angry, and
unbelievably sarcastic.

That speech right there is why I can no longer sit, half-in and
half-out, on the sidelines of this election. We as a nation cannot
afford another 4-8 years, and with Palin potentially another 12-16
years, of this kind of divisive, petty, us-against-them politics.

<a
href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/7/2/223046/0372/410/545729">I
am still quite upset with Obama over FISA as well as with those
supporters who were so willing to go republican-lite in their drive to
prop up anything he does as gospel, inviolate to criticism.</a>

But I can put that aside just enough to work for him and donate to his
campaign, full bore, while offering that criticism and continued
dissent. I will never stop believing that politicians should be held
accountable, no matter what their political affiliation. But what I saw
last night reminded me in full why the McCain-Palin ticket must be
defeated come November 4th.

It's not just a defeat for them politically or the republican party.
It's a defeat of the smallness of politics that George W. Bush, Karl
Rove, Dick Cheney, and the rest of the republicans have driven us to
over the past 8 years. It is a defeat of a politics that would rather
see this country continue forward divided, not for the sake of the
country, but for the sake of power.

Last week, Obama said that John McCain loves this country and wants to
do the best thing for it even if they disagree on how to do it. After
last night's speech, I cannot believe that they have any desire to
truly help this country in anything but to encourage the growth of our
deepest divisions, hatreds, suspicions, and wedges.

That cannot happen. And I'll be damned if I let that happen while having the power to make even a small dent.

So today, I not only returned the $450 I retrieved from the Obama
campaign, I added another $200 on top of that. In another few weeks I
will make another donation of $350 to bring my campaign contributions
to $1,000 for the cycle.

I have created a fundraising page with a goal of $5,000 that I will be
spreading to friends and family. I ask that you help me reach that goal.

Good on ya. Only sorry you had to post while the software was going berserk..... But well done.

Donations are at $955 currently. Thanks everyone for the help! Let's keep it going!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have been so depressed the last 2 days at the prospect of these really bad word people being allowed to retain the White House.

I have been humiliated as a Republican over what this country has become under the their rule. I started to sit the election out as well, but from the other side. Obama grabbed my attention and he continues to impress me more every day.

I have vacillated back and forth on whether to change my party affiliation or just vote Democratic this cycle. I had about decided to stay a Republican and try to work for change from the inside out. But after the shenanigans of the past week...the very idea that a man would want to be President so badly that he would sell his soul to the devil, by using a woman who may some day be a somebody in the Republican Party, but is now woefully unqualified, to worm his way into the White House, I'm done w/ them. I will now be calling myself a former Republican until I get to the point that I feel like I've done enough penance to deserve to call myself a Democrat.

Stillidealistic,
I am glad you were able to make the decision as a Republican to support Obama and I welcome you to the Democratic Party but please don't feel you have to do penance before you can call yourself a Democrat. I was trying not to post here until the 15th but I can't stand people whipping themselves in public. First - it is usually not the people that need to beat themselves that do this. Second - there are plenty of people all over that will gladly do the whipping on you for you at any given moment. Stop it or get help.

LOL...thank you! I needed that!

I was an Army officer stationed in Germany in 1968 with the obviously limited information sources on politics that are provided to the military. I did not like Nixon because I just didn't trust him, but I voted for him believing he was more likely to get us out of Viet Nam than Humphrey.

I am still doing penance for that vote. At least you figured it out before the election.

Though I must admit that I am still laughing over walking into the local Democratic Party HQ wearing my NRA Life Member ball cap and having a puzzled woman politely ask me "Are you sure this is where you mean to be?" (It was.)

Given the increasing authoritarianism of the US, the spying, the end of habeus corpus, the 'unitary executive' etc,

Lets face it, we might be needing those arms.

I'm really not kidding. I'm considering buying something like a .30-06 with a 'deer rifle'-like wooden stock, but gas powered semi-auto action and handy clips instead of a magazine.

stillidealistic,
Welcome to the light side.

Yalin,

I absolutely loved the way you set up this post - and am very happy to hear that you've reconciled yourself to the fact that we may not agree with everything Obama does and says (I too was absolutely ballistic when he flopped on FISA but I truly believe there just has to be a good reason why he did it...and even though I think supporting Georgia in any sense is a foolish and naive move that begs for trouble) I still believe that the only chance for the future of our country is Obama/Biden. I too have taken it upon myself to ensure that I make sure he hears me when I think he’s wrong, and I think that he one of the few politicians willing to listen to the arguments before acting.

I respect the service of McCain and I do believe that he honestly believes that he would be best for this country - but it is clear that isn't the case. The RNC motto choice of "country first" is probably the most inappropriate choice they could have made.

McCain made not only a foolish choice in Palin, who is completely unqualified to be POTUS but by doing so he has proven that his ambition outweighs the best interests of this country and everyone in it. Only someone completely inconsiderate and foolish would jeopardize this country by putting an unqualified person in 2nd command - where at any time circumstances might result in her ending up POTUS and lacking even the basic qualifications to be such.

We can NOT allow ourselves to put another power-hungry, elitist, foolish, naive, war-mongering, fear preying, liar into the White House - period.

For the last few days I've listened to the pundits hyping Palin up and saying what a "breath of fresh air" she is and how she's going to revitalize the party and I was starting to lose hope. Something about her just doesn't sit well -and it isn't that she's a woman - I'm a woman & mother and I find that she is completely unqualified to be in the WH and is the antithesis to what this country needs.

We must elect a new administration that will not only restore the constitution, reputation, economy, direction and perhaps the very spirit/faith/hope of this country but who will guide it responsibly – and MCCAIN/PALIN IS NOT IT!

sorry I didn't see this, I just gave BO $20. Gave $20 last night also and $60 last week. Not so much, but what I can afford. Going to drop by the campaign headquarters tomorrow and see about helping out.

Yalin -- are you 'calling' based on the scripts and numbers that the BO website provides? How challenging is that? (contend with many angry partisan folk?)

I'm calling based on the scripts from the Obama campaign and phone bank #s I'm provided. Thank you skype. :)

But I sometimes will go off script depending on the views and questions of the caller.

stillidealistic - I can completely sympathize with your desire to stick with your party and final decision to break with them and just wanted to say that you don't necessarily have to reconcile yourself to going from repub to dem - I for one have decided that I am an independent now - I used to believe I was a dem but I tend to believe that they have gone a tad "big government" happy and I find a certain satisfaction in refusing to give anyone the assumption of a loyalty vote - no way! I am now 32 years old and until May this year I had never voted. I had completely resolved to steer clear of politics because the underhanded dealings and behind-closed-doors agendas literally made me furious.

I accidentally had the news on one evening and caught one of Obama’s speeches and something in it made me sit there and listen instead of turning it off and his words echoed the values, ideals and aspirations that I had buried away long ago in hopelessness and he expressed an understanding of the position that I see our country in – which is one that requires immediate, significant, responsible and focused change – in order for it to survive and recover. Once I checked out his site and read through his platform, complete with his plans, ideas and goals, I was sold – completely sold. I became an avid blogger to spread his positions and for the first time ever – made campaign calls for a politician – which I still can’t believe that I did. My family, husband and likely a whole lot of politicians - particularly my governor, state reps and senators are probably wishing I'd stayed the way I was.

I'm not the "lets hold hands and sing kumbiya" type like some pundits allege Obama supporters to be - I'm a realist – and I have long realized that this country is in peril – in every sense of the word. The current administration has brought us to the brink of demise and without serious changes we will not recover – much less prosper or even get back to what we once were. We have to find a new way – and McCain is not offering anything more than a continuation of failed policies and agendas that have placed us further and further into peril.

The world is waiting and watching to see if Americans can make the first step towards redeeming themselves – and even though this election is only the first step – it will show the values of Americans and put us on the path to restoring our once envied reputation. It truly isn't just a "line" when they say Mccain will be more Bush policy - and from the posts the international community is making - our decision will have a swift and unmistakable impact on the international climate we face. It isn’t about parties anymore – it’s about Americans and whether we have the intelligence and strength to take back our country and redeem ourselves.

I for one will do anything that I have to or can do - for the sake of my family, my children and all generations to come - to assist them in effecting that change.

Your testimony is almost exactly like mine, as expressed when I first joined TPM in July. As a mother and grandmother I am scared to death of what the Republican establishment is attempting to do.

Your testimony sounds much like mine, as posted when I first joined TPM back in July. As a mother and grandmother I an scared to death about what the Republican machine is trying to do. We all should be...I haven't read 1984 since I was in middle school, but I'm heading off to the library...It's time to reread it.

You must understand my friend FISA was a blow to my enthusiasm as well but when I sit back I asked myself this question "This bill I totally disagree with, if I took away this bill would my enthusiasm continue to be through the roof?" The answer to that question was HELL YES. You may not agree with everything but look at the bigger picture, and the bigger fight to be had with the Republicans. WE CANNOT lose this election, it is just to important and I am truly greatful that you are back on the battlefield.

Back when people were saying they wouldn't vote for Obama, or that they might even vote for McCain, many of my friends started worrying. They were saying things like, "I think Obama might have blown it." "What about all those Hillary supporters? Will they ever come back to the Party?" The usual. My response was always, "Stop worrying. Wait until McCain and the Republicans start going on the attack. They'll try to do the usual hit job on Obama, and in the process they'll attack everything we Democrats stand for. That'll remind people why they don't vote for Republicans, and why the Republicans can't be allowed to keep the White House." But none of us could have foreseen horribleness that is Sarah Palin. I'm glad McCain picked her, because she's going to piss people off. And not just Democrats. She'll piss off independents and decent, fair conservatives too. I hope she goes on the attack and stays on the attack. And I hope Obama continues to refuse to respond and continues to walk past her and continues to make his case in a calm, positive and respectful way. McCain is simply outmatched. And now that he's stuck with $84 million in public financing and people like you and me are fired up, McCain will be outmatched financially as well. We're going to win this thing. And Sarah Palin is going to help us do it.

I respectfully bu vehemently disagree.

The notion of pretending not to notice an attack dog plays right into Josh Marshall's patented 'bitch slap' theory.

Thank you brother/sister Yalin! I feel ya hard on FISA, and a couple other issues as well, but the rethugs are nothing less than an affront to our very way of life. Good on you for rejoining the battle, let's kick some neoCon ass, then hold our elected officials accountable for promises made. Yes We Can!

How can you withdraw a donation? That seems dishonest to me. Glad you sent it back, anyway. Seems like you ought to double it.

Sorry, I mean to say your post would make it double -- I donated after Palin's speech too. The FISA thing was a disappointment for me too, but it pales in comparison to what McCain would do to us.

Remember Dubya's speeches in 2000? He was a "uniter, not a divider" but he has presided over making our country's divisiveness stronger than ever before in our history. He was "not into nation-building" -- well, strictly speaking this is true (he has done more nation-destroying than building) but who could say he hasn't had as a goal "to tear down and then build up nations in the image he wants."

McCain's rhetoric last night was so false and phony. He co-opted Barack's ideas of change, but will only pay lip-service to them. My friends, this guy is dangerous on so many levels it is a waste of time to list them. The only practical thing to do is work to keep him from stealing this election. Massive turn-out is the only way.

Palin certainly does nothing to bring moderates and independents to his ticket, and he seems perfectly happy with that. Oh, did you know he was a POW?

I wrote to them and called them to ask for a refund of my donation because of FISA. They sent it in a week.

Dishonest?

Way to go Yalin. Your story warmed the cockles of my heart. I have sent your story to all my e-friends. We are all contributing as we understand the consequences of this election.

START THE CLOCK!!!

CAN TPM PLEASE START A CLOCK COUNTING THE DAYS THAT ARE GOING BY WITH SARAH PALIN NOT SITTING DOWN FOR A NATIONAL INTERVIEW WITH A SERIOUS REPORTER FROM A LEGITIMATE NEWS ORGANIZATION? It's a shame that she could potentially be a heartbeat away from the presidency and we've yet to hear her without a script. So far we're on Day 7.

I'm a college professor and I have to keep my mouth shut in the classroom about this stuff, but I don't think I have been so outraged (December 2000 was just a premonition of the lows to which politics in this country has sunk), but this week I realized that the with Palin, the Republicans are hoping to reproduce Bush's victory. They hope to promote a young, brash, folksy governor with little experience or respect for experience who is thoroughly ideological and an extremist - to connect to the worst fears and reactions of many people in the country who feel left behind and shut out of the American media, and its modern institutions -- to work her way into the highest office of government.

We cannot let these tactics make us hopeless and cynical. We have to hope for something better, but I must admit, I am afraid, I am very afraid of the Right and their tactics.

I spent a lot of time being afraid of the Reichwingers up until this year. But after watching my family and my community suffer under the idiocy of Dubya, I stopped being afraid - and started being pissed.

From late 2006 through early this year, I was backing Hillary Clinton. I switched during the primary season to Barack Obama.

But my overriding goal was to get Republicans out of the White House. That's the imperative that Yalin so correctly captures in the post. We could be running a cardboard cutout of Adlai Stevenson, and I'd STILL pull the blue lever.

I'm done being scared. It's time to break out the whoop-ass. All McCain and Palin have done is crystallize that thought for every liberal in the country. Enough!

At work today I was talking politics to a 50 something white male who usually votes Republican. He will vote for Obama because of Palin.

I don't love everything about Obama/Biden (FISA, the farm bill, and hardest of all, the bankruptcy bill) but the Democrats are making a serious attempt to tackle our nation's biggest problems. I don't agree with everything he proposes, but at least they have a clear plan. The offering from Republicans is ridiculous.

I'm all for the whoopass -- break it out, but I guess I am suffering from PTSD from the last two elections and I hadn't had an outbreak of it until the Sarah Palin, Mittens, Huckabee, Rudy speeches, when I saw finally how low the Republicans will go to smear their opponents and just tell out right lies, they like they did during the Swiftboating of Kerry to WIN. And they train proxies to behave shamefully, while rising above the river of #@$ that they have released.

I guess I haven't been listening to right-wing radio because apparently this stuff about the Dems and Obama has been broadcast there incessantly, but I still find it shocking how hate-filled and ignorant the mouthpieces of the Right really are. And I thought it wouldn't work in 2000 and I thought it couldn't work again in 2004, but as most everyone has said, there are NEW reasons to be hopeful. And cynicism about the political process serves the cause of the reactionaries more than it does that of the progressives.

Call it "The Palin Bump."

I've talked with many people who donated for the first time or gave more because of Palin's speech (me, too). Not only was she horribly dismissive of Obama and his accomplishments, the way she did it made her sound like the bully I'd already been reading she is.

I know that many people say that the Dems have to get tougher and go after McCain and Palin the way they've gone after Obama and Biden, but one of the things I've liked best about the Obama campaign is the decency with which it's been run (for the most part).

Can we have a secret word that Obama and Biden would use in avery speech or statement if they put on the boxing gloves (unlike the bare knuckles and brass knuckles of the Repubs) and get nasty? That way, I could know that this is part of the theater of the campaign, rather than attacks that came from the heart.

But since Obama and Co. have not gone down that ugly path before, and McCain and Palin do it so readily, I already believe that Obama's a much better person than they.

Sorry for the double. I gave the system a lot of time to figure itself out, but it fooled me. Ya think they might find a way to fix this before the election?

obama should give up the election and pass the torch to Hillary!!! the longer he stays in the more Mccaiun and and Palin will surge in the Polls. its the ayers/dorhn/bopudin controversy that will ultimately hand the elction to Mccain.
At least another Great irishman like myself will win the elcetion. Not Obama the Black Irishman who is happy to be called Aferkin AMerikin instead. ya Black Power! hahHAHAHAH

stillidealistic,
Welcome to the light side.

Thank you for the hopefulness in these postings and for your support of Obama.

I am working my a$$ off for the Obama campaign and I have many hopeful conversations with folks as I canvass my urban neighborhood. I tell anyone that I can buttonhole that this is the most critical election in my lifetime--so far--and I will soon be 59.

I am grateful if a vote is contributed to this campaign. If anyone can give more, then give money then your time. Reaching voters by phone or by knocking on doors is also a possibility. The campaign offices also have need of data entry folks (from all of the phone calls and knocking on doors), front office people, and even folks who can drop off some doughnuts and coffee every once in a while. Almost all of these activities can be done very close to where you live.

If you're concerned about things like canvassing in the neighborhood, ask to be paired with an experienced canvasser. I've done that a lot and take on the role anytime I'm asked. There are people who are shocked to discover that they actually like canvassing--I'm one of them.

What I've found is that just that phone call or that knock on the door energizes people to register for the first time or to drop their cynicism and vote after several years of not voting or just to do a happy dance with you when you discover they plan on voting for Obama. Our American voters just need a bit of attention and an acknowledgement from a neighbor that their vote is so important.

Go to barackobama.com to find out how you can volunteer right in your neighborhood. You will not regret it.

Sales pitch is now official over. :)

here's a thought for the rightwing nutters, maybe Sarah Palin is the anti-christ.

Thank you so much for your post. I was also pretty down thinking that yet another election would be won with lies and political jabber. This time I really do think we have the real deal.

I was originally a Hillary supporter, but early last spring I read The Audacity of Hope and I turned immediately. The tone of Hillary's campaign clinched it for me. I wish every voter would read that book before voting.

The Audacity of Hope paints a vision of American that all of us most likely share. It is a vision that Barack Obama and Joe Biden are deeply committed to achieving. Whether they can achieve it remains to be seen, but I am convinced that it will depend on whether we can all unify and work toward that common vision for our country rather than our strict ideologies.

It breaks my heart that fear and lies might overcome hope and a unified vision. Those of us who look to Obama to help us achieve that collective dream might actually look whacko, but I think that those who support him the most intensely are those who are the most informed about him, his goals and his dedication to making it happen. Who could choose an extention of the past 8 years over hope for fairness and forward motion.

Yalin and folks :
Can't help but chime in about FISA.

Legislating is complex and sadly doesn't line up with knee-jerk idealism and what "should be" right or wrong. Is is narrowly restricted by pragmatism and tradeoffs. If you haven't got 60 votes, you must go with the bill you can actually get passed.

A "perfect" FISA bill would have been vetoed if it had been written in such a way that would have satisfied all of us lefties and constitutional protectionists. The fact of the matter is that George W Bush is a madman who would have vetoed your ideal FISA bill.

Period.

The compromise bill forces all future activity to go back to the FISA court like it should, and it plugs most loopholes so that there is accountability now moving forward. The only thing it doesn't do is punish companies who followed the instruction of the president of the united states when he compelled them and swore that it was a matter of national security to give up information that could help prevent terrorism. Yeah, they should have refused. Perhaps we should want the chaos of bankrupting the phone providers of 60% of our nation just to make a point. But that's moot. We didn't have 60 Democratic Senators.

Obama is smarter than you think, and can do far more good as president, than as one junior senator from Illinois.
