No Pre-Debate Spin Helps McCain
A possible explanation to McCain's ridiculous debate stunt:
I was just reading in an article on Politico which pointed out that the focus this week on the failing economy and questions about whether or not McCain will be at the debate tonight has distracted the media from what is usually an extensive pre-debate spin session. Since the subject of this debate is foreign affairs, a subject that McCain considers his strength, that pre-debate spin would have favored McCain, presenting a large potential for him not to live up to expectations.
I think this debate stunt was a way for McCain to lower expectations for his preformance in tonight's debate by preventing the pre-debate spin that would have favored him. Knowing that Obama would exceed the low expectations set for him, McCain threw a hail mary distraction. It had its immediate political flaws but it distracts from his forthcoming lackluster debate performance.

Even NRO is speculating that PO'ing the Ol' Miss audience was not a very good move.
Do they still "Tar and Feather" people down there?
I sure hope so. LOL

I think you're forgetting the circumstances in which he did it. The entire media coverage was disastrous for him at the time - remember his `the economy is sound` reaction? Even his own talking heads were conceding on tv that he hadn't shone that week, that he'd been all over the place. I think it was classic McCain reacting on impulse needing to change the subject, trying to change the direction of the assessments.
