High-school essayist

In her interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin reminded me of an unprepared high-schooler taking an essay test: desperately trying to fill the spaces in the blue book, spouting stuff almost at random to reach the desired word count. Palin explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign-policy experience:

It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right next to, they are right next to our state.
Sheesh. Her answers on the economy, the bailout, and Rick Davis are equally bad. She's got her pre-programmed talking points; otherwise, she's got nothin'. It is painful to watch, really.
The interview does lend credence to the seemingly farfetched notion that the real goal of McCain's postpone-the-debate gambit is to scotch the vice presidential debate. His campaign has got to realize that Palin is completely unready -- especially to face someone with Biden's knowledge and experience.

And this is something they can't and couldn't have cured in a couple months. She just isn't capable of putting her thoughts into words. During her speeches she's able to read the written word, but every time she's had to ad lib a complex issue she stumbles and falls. And I'm not trying to be cruel here, this is just an observation.
I also wanted to ad that Olbermann had Margaret Carlson on and she was bold enough to point out that Palin does not represent small town America. I was brought up in a small town (pop. 778) in Wisconsin and I have never in my life heard someone with such inability to express themselves as Palin.

Painful to watch/listen to!

This is funny, HA!:

That's beautiful! Killed me!

Hysterical!

I don't think the debate strategy you mention is farfetched at all, at this point. If, after weeks of intensive preparation, Palin can't handle a interview with Katie Couric, then the McCain campaign has to get her out of the debate at all costs. Biden, who's very good when he can keep his foot out of his mouth, would incinerate her. If they can't use the bailout negotiations to eighty-six the vice-presidential debate, I'd look for some sort of illness or family crisis to pop up.

You are right. If I were in McCain's shoes I would try to prevent her from debating and take my chances with the backlash because right now she is a laughing stock...and that's probably putting it lightly. On campus yesterday I walked through the union and a group of students were watching tv and laughing (hard) during an airing of Palin trying to speak during one of the interviews, it was embarassing and I don't even care for her. I have respect (at least a little bit) for anyone in the White House but she actually sounds 'toopider than Bush, if that's at all possible.

I, for one, will be disappointed if I don't get to see Biden show us how to field dress a moose during the debate.

I was looking forward to seeing the debate written up in next months issue of Field & Stream.

I'm ready for my colonoscopy now.

Doesn't Palin know that we're actually trying to follow what she's saying? I so have my red pen out.

"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go?"

Rears his head? Putin is a "they"? Huh?

"It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia...."

Send what out? Trade missions? What were we talking about again? I don't know what Palin's even talking about.
