Defining Deviency Down
The Republicans always love to talk about cultural abasement in terms of the poor and most particularly in terms of African Americans. They trot out Moynihan's phrase "defining deviency down" and complain about single mothers, absent fathers and rap music.
However, I submit that the most successful effort to define deviency down has come from the Republican party itself. From Nixon to Reagan to Bush to McCain, we have had a string of administrations and campaigns marked by corruption, secrecy and lies. And the result is that McCain's campaign staff arrogantly and flippantly boasts that they don't care that the media calls them on their lies.
Yes, they know they are lying in the ads. They know that using words like disrespectful and arrogant to talk about Obama is code talk to white folks to tell them to shut down the "uppity" black man. They don't care though, because they have so successfully lowered expectations of integrity and honesty among Republicans, it's not a story when they are corrrupt, lying conmen.
Corrupt Republican? Yawn! Been there, done that.
And so they get away with it - there's no outrage because they have exhausted and outlasted outrage.

Wait. Are the "uppity" ads Internet ads or TV ads? They sound like Internet ads. If they are YouTube ads, they reach only a limited audience: geeks like us. When we obsess about them, however, they manage to get the attention of the mainstream media, which then becomes free advertising for McCain. On the Media did a story about it, using the Lipstick on a Pig episode.
Make McCain have to pay for ads, at the very least: Let's stop freaking out about his Internet ads. We're being played.

Also: I'm not sure your example works. Nixon, Reagan, Bush, McCain suggests a progression. As far as history is concerned, Nixon is far worse than the other three.
Moynihan's theory is kind of interesting to think about when you apply it to all the presidents (not just Republicans) since Nixon.
One big thing I do agree with, btw, is that McCain knows he's lying. Palin also knows she's lying. And they are gleefully rubbing our faces in it.

It's not deviancy unless it's deviating from their playbook.

As someone who briefly worked for Pat Moynihan, I love -- just LOVE -- to see that phrase used against the corruption in the modern GOP.
As Moynihan also said, "Everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion. Nobody is entitled to their own personal facts."

Only we can pull things out of the gutter by demanding more of the media. We can be 'played' or we can be outraged and demanding consumers. Do you see how republican women are organizing to protest the fact that Oprah won't have Palin on her show even though that has been her policy about all of the candidates. They organized and have articles in the paper about it. Why are repbulicans so much better and being angry and outraged and demanding attention?? they do it about 'everything' because it works for them. We have to start using our power as consumers and voters to demand that the media stop playing sides. They sure as hell should not be taking money to run smear ads that are full of blatant lies. They don't have to and we should find ways to hit their bottom line when they do.
