Dear Twenty-somethings, Please Save Us!

The facts are these; I'm going to be 58 in December, I'm blind in one eye and have dealt with a severe, debilitating arthritic disease since I was in my early 30's.  Most people would say I am disabled.  But I continue to work full-time and in my spare time, run an online support group for people who are afflicted with the same disease from which I suffer.

I am a lifelong Democrat, and have voted in every election since I came of age.  As a senior in high school, I passed out leaflets for Eugene McCarthy.  I once considered myself a Liberal idealist,  something that most people today would dismiss with a mocking gesture of disdain. As I got older, I lost that idealism as the realities of Life claimed a bigger and bigger piece of me.  In 1992, I tried to rev up my old idealism, but it wasn't the same. I was older, wiser, and more saavy to the evils of the opposition.  I had come to know that idealism is seldom treated kindly. In fact, it is most often assassinated or left to die by people's refusal to take a chance on it, for fear of being horribly disappointed ... again.  It hurts so much each and every time that our idealism is ripped away and killed by the cynicism and negativity of non-believers.  Now, I've watched and thrilled as Obama has re-kindled the fires of optimism and hope in the hearts of so many people. But now I also see the forces of evil and their steamroller of cynicism, hate and utter lies bearing down on our cause.  They want to once again kill off idealism and the hopes and dreams of millions because it scares them and threatens their grip on power.  They will stop at nothing. There is no dirty trick or sleazy tactic to which they will not stoop. That's just a fact.

I watch and pray this year won't be the repeat of so many elections of the recent past.  Unfortunately, I no longer have the energy or the physical ability to go out and work for the Obama campaign, which is why I am sending this message out to all you healthy, young 20-somethings, the first time voters, the would-be idealists who still think they can change the world.  My message to you is this; You CAN change the world, in fact, you are my generation's best hope for salvation.  Please SAVE US!!

The Mainstream Media likes to point out that the "youth vote" can never be counted on to show up.  They didn't show up for Gore, they didn't show up for Kerry, and they probably won't show up for Obama.  At least, that's what the 'smart money' says; the cable tv pundits and talk-radio spinmeisters ...

But you CAN prove all of the pundits and partisan spokespersons wrong and save us from the horrible fate of another Republican administration. You can save the world by simply showing up on election day en masse and voting as if your future and the future of the rest of America depended on it. (It actually does, you know ...)

If you do show up, I will promise you this; your life will be changed more than mine.  You will enjoy the fruits of this idealism far longer than I will ... or anyone else will from my generation.   It's your future, I'm just fighting and struggling to survive in it.  So please, do an old crippled guy a favor. SAVE THE WORLD!

Show up on election day and vote Obama-Biden!

Thanks.

Excellent call to action! We need everyone to speak truth with one voice. We need Barack Obama in the White House.

I gave you a rec, but you know, it's because of the 58 year-old liberal idealists that Obama (and Palin) are in the race and why Obama is most likely going to win.

Will this 30 something do?

My 8 year old is better at identifying the lies being told by McCain than most adults - so there is hope for the future!

Definitely!

Absolutely!

One of my 60 year old friends told me he just registered yesterday so he could vote for Obama. Unbelievable, I would have never asked him if he was registered but someone in front of a grocery store did!

I can attest to the fact that McCain's VP pick and the GOP convention has fired up OUR base. I know I am. I donated extra this month. Tonight I went to a call party of MoveOn volunteers. All 30 of the people who had RSVP'd showed up. We all called MoveOn members in swing states to let them know about upcoming Obama campaign volunteer meetings in their neighborhood. Every single person I spoke with wanted to go to their meeting and only one couldn't make it. They all were fired up! People here, people on the phone. Time to get busy folks. McCain's got a gimmick, we've got a movement.

All I can say is that in Iowa they tried to discount the youth showing up to the Caucuses. But they did show up!

Young people, more than anybody, need jobs and health care and homes and the things they see their parents and grandparents having... but now see slipping away.

Young people are not going to be distracted by a lying McShame and his Trophy Huntress.

That's funny, I was thinking of posting a blog asking the older folks to talk to their friends & family who may be one the fence or even thinking about McPalin.

I'm 31, and in my city there appears to be nothing but Obama support, so it's easy to forget that outside this bubble there is confusion and misinformation and fear of the "scary black Muslim guy".

Since I rarely come in contact with older (or any age)undecided folks, those of you that do, PLEASE have an enlightened convo and maybe, just maybe, someone will realize they want their granddaughters to have access to choice, or hope for a cleaner environment. Please help us!

(And yes M. Smith, I will what I can to get the "youngsters" registered & to the polls :)

I have to say, it's typical of a baby boomer to frame things in generational terms.

While I agree with the sentiment about getting a usually apathetic portion of the population engaged, it's more of the same to say that the 20 year olds will save us. This is the same garbage that was shouted out in the 60s! (Don't trust anyone over 30.)

I do wish, however, that more boomers expressed the humility that you did in your post. For that I thank you!

And let's all get to work on making the country better...

Not to be overly critical, but I found this line hilarious:

"I have to say, it's typical of a baby boomer to frame things in generational terms."

Fair enough, let me restate:

It's not surprising that someone who's entire life was told they were part of a "movement" as a result of time of birth will now think exclusively in terms of these demographics.

Thanks for the post and it is very moving to hear it from someone who's been there. And it links us to our past which is even better.

You, sir, ROCK!

As a 20-something in Colorado, I'll just say this; don't worry, we're on it.

Hope you have good health insurance sir because you won't get it whether the winner of this election is Obama or McCain.

And may I remind you folks that the general election is not a caucus and Obama was already rejected by half his party's voters. Many will come over to the nominee but enough won't.

The party assured our loss this year by letting the super delegates select our candidate and by their unreasoned hatred of all things Clinton. Obama was always a flawed candidate who peaked in Feb.

And as a good democrat if I wanted republican lite I would vote for McCain. Which issues are we supposed to believe in and change? FISA, public financing for campaigns, universal healthcare, faith based initiatives? Oh yeah Obama isn't for any of those things.

I agree with you on the healthcare *to a point*:

My thoughts were that either candidate had to start at "universal" knowing that would be near impossible. So, starting at "affordable" seems like a copout. But, is it really? Maybe you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...

Us 20-somethings will be out in force this election. We understand fully that this election decides the quality of life we face through out adult lives, and failing to vote will cost us more than we can ever imagine. Rise young adults of America! This is our nation, our time, our future!

The group of 18-25 year olds who vote Obama/Biden can truly take up the mantle and proclaim themselves "Then NEW greatest generation". I have known since very early that Obama will win but I think this poster is right that the younger people will have to push us over the line.
He will win, all you have to do is SHOW UP EN MASSE.

I think this post is precisely the type of thing that is needed to mobilize my age group (and increase the Democratic base for the future).

Too often the "youth never show up so they won't this time" claims are self-fulfilling, in my opinion.

Locally (including the Iowa caucuses this January) I have noticed that youth turnout will increase if kids think their effort matters. Before the primary season, national and local media pushed the story that Obama's outreach to younger voters could tip the scales, focusing especially on college students. I honestly believe the youth vote will thrive if more of the spotlight is shone on our participation.

Obama has younger voters excited to be a part of the process, but that enthusiasm needs to be nurtured and encouraged. Whether or not such a view is justified, some younger voters subconsciously equate "your generation won't show up, so you won't make a difference" with "your vote doesn't matter." I think the attitude behind posts like this are necessary for proving that old adage wrong.

I'm a 59 year old granny and I say I am so proud of all Americans young and old who are working so hard to save our country. My 85 year old mother is even helping, but the 20-somethings YOU are amazing. Keep up the hard work. The future is for you!

NOTE TO 20-somethings.

Don't wait till 6:59 PM to vote.

GET UP EARLY FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIVES.

Get up early and vote BEFORE WORK.

If you want to take a modern day "Clean for Gene" pledge (Google it) then pledge to go to bed at 10pm Monday and get up at 6am Tuesday.

No amount of good intentions will make up for not showing up to the polls in time.

DON'T BE WAITING OUTSIDE FOR HOURS ON END.

Get it done early.

I think we should be encouraging people to vote EARLY whenever possible to get the votes in the bank, so to speak.

I have been pondering a strategy, but I see some possible flaws, so I'd like some feedback.

I was thinking of urging everyone who could to vote absentee ["early"]. Then you'd be free to spend election day on GOTV activities. Heck, you could even travel from your own "safe" state to a "battleground" one [not needing to be in your own town to vote].

What concerns me, however, is the possibility of those "early" votes being stolen. For instance, absentee ballots could be "lost," "misplaced," whatever, or "challenged" -- an even more disturbing possibility. If one's challenged at the polls by Republican vote-suppressors, at least you're on-site to challenge back. However, if your absentee ballot is challenged, how do you respond?

Chuck Todd said yesterday on Olbermann that "whoever is ahead on October 15 will win this thing." I don't know if that takes into account absentee votes or not. And I don't know how we can protect those absentee votes.

Heck, I don't even know how we can prevent vote-caging, illegal voter purges, "long lines" at the "too few" voting machines, and other techniques the Republicans use to steal elections they can't win on the merits.

Thoughts?

Dear M. Smith,
Thank you for a needed reminder. No matter how much I fret about the future of our country there are those whose well-being hinges on the outcome of this election. Thank you for reminding me and everyone else that there are two people who want to fight and can't for every person who can fight but won't. Call to duty dually noted.

While I understand your 'frustration' about some issues that you may believe were compromised by the Senator's votes in Congress, don't write all off by sitting on the sidelines or voting for Mccain. You should voice your disagreement with Obama's votes but you should continue to support him all the more. Nobody agrees with another 100% of the time.

I'm not a 20 something, but I've been volunteering -- I canvass on Saturdays and make calls during the week after work.

Tonight I recruited a new very enthusiastic volunteer who's ready to expend some election anxiety energy. She's even ready to canvass! Every call, every knock counts for something.

It's going to take people of all ages doing whatever they can to bring about an Obama win, but it can happen. Our country can't afford another president who delegates decision-making responsibility to advisers and appointees on every major issue. It's imperative we elect someone who actually understands and takes an interest in the issues.

Now let's get busy.

Thank you for the endorsement (though I'm actually too young to be included in your category) of my generation. I agree with the poster who said that it helps in the youth believe that their vote matters- that is why I believe Obama is keeping the race close. To make sure that nobody stays home.

That fired me up so much I am going to donate 50 more dollars to Obama's campaign. I cant wait to cast my ballot for America's future, a future that will sore with Obama leading it.

Sir,

You put this post so eloquently and I hope you don't mind but I reposted this on my myspace page in the hopes that it is passed to potentially millions of young people that I believe along with you, really have the power to change this country that is currently going to hell so quick it's making my head hurt.

Thanks for your contribution. I'm right there with you!
