Bristol's DECISION?
<blockquote>"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.
As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support. "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."</blockquote>
Did anyone else notice this wording in this statement? Has anyone called them on it? Even bothered to ask? Her DECISION? Just askin'...
I'm not attacking the poor girl here who has unfortunately been dragged into this mess. What I'm questioning is the curious phrasing of the statement from a supposedly pro-life candidate.

Are you a legal adult in Alaska at age 17?
In most states, I believe that would make you a minor, who legally cannot make this "decision."
A fine and probably meaningless legal point, but politics doesn't always make sense.

She is pro-contraception and anti-abortion, that's why.

If she has stated recently that she supports "pro-contreception" education or distribution of contriception than it contradicts her 2006 GOP candidate questionaire she filled out:
Q: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?
Palin: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.

She's pro-contraception/family planning, just not distribution to minors through school programs. She's also for abstinence only education.

I disagree with her on abstinence only, but she is on record as pro-contraception.

Well I would take that statement to mean the Alaska Supreme Court struck down the parental consent requirements for minors having an abortion in 2007 which means that a minor in Alaska would not have had to inform her parents of the pregnancy or get parental consent and could have made an alternate choice. She is the pro-life candidate, but her daughter lives in a state that currently allowed her the irght to make that decision independently. Many other states do have parently consent or notification laws.

"Decision" also means she decided to keep the baby and start a family rather than give the baby up for adoption. Duh.

Rec'd, btw, for dijamo's and Lalo's comments. Rec'd to show how basic research and calm reason rather than lazy speculation ought to be the norm at TPM.
