But first he said this:
He said he would respect the Palestinian's acceptance of a two-state solution, but I don't think he expects Hamas to settle for that.

The quote posted is pretty much the point here. In his view, harshly as it may be expressed, Israel's "illegitimacy" right now is because they "forced the exit of the old people out."
If Israel agrees to a legitimate two-state solution (meaning not just leaving the palestinians with a piece of unirrigable desert with no port or waterway access)--and as of right now, Israel is the only one holding this process up--then Iran can recognise Israel, followed by everyone else. That is why the 'current Zionist regime' should be "wiped off the pages of history," i.e., when the two-state solution is in place, Israel is no longer that 'current Zionist regime' but a legitimate state in the eyes of the Arab world.

I surely hope Obama as president will finally broker a sustainable, lasting peace, and a viable nation for the Palestinians. The financial meltdown is terrible, but not even close to anything the Palestinians, Lebanese and the Iraqis have gone through.

I share your hope, but I'm starting to wonder if not only Americans but also the world is placing too much expectation on an Obama presidency. I suppose we all are so tired of human insanity, greed, hatred, and war that we are looking for some kind of saviour. Barack is just a mere human being, the world needs to take responsibility to save itself.

It's not that difficult - there are processes in place that could bring about an equitable outcome for a 2-state solution. The UN has brokered a lot of such deals, eg. the former Czechoslovakia. It's the politics that's getting in the way - there are a lot of very powerful people who are *dead-set* against any compromises. Most of these people reside in America. It's the American political will that is the problem.
