A Cubs Fan's Perspective on Palin
Being a Cubs fan, I'm all too sensitized to early whiffs of oncoming failure. When your team starts looking for excuses to lose - and CYA stories about why it's not your fault - you're doomed.
That's the context I think the Palin pick needs to be seen in. Obama's acceptance speech was so good, McCain freaked and started concocting spin for the post-mortem. "Well, I went with my gut but the media just had a field day with the Alaska woman." "No Republican was gonna win after Bush. It was doomed from the start." "Like I said, I'd rather lose a campaign than compromise my ideals..."
These were McCain's true motives when he pulled Palin out of his pocket. A nice bit of chum to distract the sharks from smelling his blood in the water.

As a Phillies (and Eagles) fan, I know exactly what you mean.

I am an Eagles fan, too. (I live in FL now, but I'm from South Jersey.)
I volunteered for the Kerry campaign.
Actually, I've worked on lots of campaigns.
They always turn out like the Eagles season.

I know that I will be more disappointed if Obama were somehow to lose, than if the Cubs don't at least make it to the World Series. If you've been around awhile, you know that people have only been talking about 1908 for the last few years. Before that it was always 1945, the Cubs' last NL pennant and World Series appearance. At least making the Series this year would put 1945 off the table.
But the question is, which would make me happier, President Obama or your World Champion Chicago Cubs? Not as easy. We're not talking about metaphysical significance here, just personal emotion.
Love to see Obama over 50% in the Rasmussen Poll today! I worked very hard in '04, really wanted Kerry not just Anyone But Bush, and couldn't face politics for at least a year after the loss. Can't give it up forever though.
Let's win em' both in '08.
