You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch
As many of you know, I'm an avid reader of FiveThirtyEight, which I consider the absolute best resource for electoral predictions and commentary on trends (in polling, campaigning, etc.). There's something that was brought up there, and I'm sure many of you know, that I think bares repeating.
Both John McCain and Barack Obama made huge ad buys during the Olympics. Barack Obama made an ad buy of $5 million dollars. Not to be outdone or look finanically cramped for cash, the McCain camp. responded by pumping $6 million into ads to run during the Olympics.
Now, that's all well and good. Before McCain's ads were finally unveiled, Nate and Sean over at FiveThirtyEight speculated that McCain would use his ad buy to highlight himself, to build his image for the voters, "personal branding". But this is not so.
I think just quoting Sean's latest post is the best way to express McCain's idiocy versus Obama's intelligence with this Olympic ad buy.
Obama’s Olympic “Hands”You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
ad celebrates American ingenuity and runs for 15 seconds before you
have any idea it’s even a political ad. There’s Michael Phelps setting
world records, there’s Morgan Freeman’s powerful voiceover in Visa ads
celebrating the human condition, then there’s a guy telling you how dangerous his political opponent is. Way to keep the mood going. Grinch, indeed.
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.
Mr. Grinch.
You're a monster, Mr. Grinch.
Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul.
Mr. Grinch.
