What Do You Think...II ?
Earlier today I made a post on the following subject and one of the comments asked for further info...I should have posted the link to the actual Assembly Bill, so I am re-posting w/ that link...Also, Billy chided me for using the word "concerned"...just pretend it isn't there!
Being fairly new to TPM I'm unaware of all the various subjects that have been covered ad nauseum, so if this is one of them let me apologize in advance...
I received an e-mail in my inbox that has ME mildly concerned, and I'm wondering if it is because of my "conservative" roots, or if there are other moderates/liberals that would just as soon steer clear of this issue in the schools...
The California legislature has passed AB 2567 which makes May 22 "Harvey Milk Day" and requires public schools to "conduct suitable commemorative exercises" in his honor. (For those of you who don't remember, Harvey Milk was an anti-religious Gay activist San Francisco Supervisor who was murdered.)

My gut feeling is that this is a subject that doesn't need to be addressed in elementary school. Parents should be able to decide at which point they want to teach their children about homosexuality.
What do you think?

I already weighed in on the subject in your last post, but I thought I might add this:
Here's a list, although probably not comprehensive:
* Edwards scandal
* Obama VP speculation
* Hillary is a bitch
* FISA/wiretapping (sadly)
* Merits of differing health care proposals
* Anything, ANYTHING primary-related
* Party unity
* Fuck Hillary
Unless you have some new facts, posting anything on the above is a waste of your and everyone else's time. We've beat, rebeat and finally "forcably coerced" those horses over and over.

Now you are just being deceptive, and trying to bury the discussion that took place on the original thread. You have added nothing new on this second thread that was not covered in the original thread's comments section.

You still have not shown any proof that the bill requires the schools to talk to the kids about homosexuality, on the day in question. Is that why you decided to start a new thread?
Be honest please.

Liam...I know you don't know me, so I can understand your hesitation to give me the benefit of the doubt...
I do not have a hidden agenda here. I wish I could combine the 2 threads onto one...when you asked for the background I realized I should have included it in the original post, so wanted to start over so more info was available for anyone who wanted to participate...I knew the 2nd post would come up above the 1st, and thought anyone interested would read the newer post 1st, thus getting the info they needed to participate.
In order to get to the link to the bill you have to scroll down through the comments and I thought it would be easier for people to decide if they wanted to perticipate if they had all the info at once...
Since I don't have any desired outcome for the post, there is no reason for me to try to "bury" the comments to the original thread. I'm merely attempting to stimulate discussion on a subject that is of interest to me, and thought others might find it interesting, as well...
As you get to know me, you will find that I am pretty up front, willing to own my mistakes and ready to debate on any issue I comment on.
If you will re-read our discussion you will realize my "concern" - I know that is a bad word around here- is only in whether this is subject suitable for children in school...I am anxious for a dialog in how to treat the subject...no more.

There is no indication of any discussion of the man's sexual orientation is required. I think it is entirely appropriate to honor a slain civil rights activist and local official. Suitable activities would mean just that: suitable to the age of the children in question.

I'm not being a smart ass...could you give me an idea as to how one might frame the discussion w/ a 5 year old, or are you thinking that maybe just coloring a picture of him would meet the goal of the bill for a 5 year old? I'm trying to get my head around what this might look like.

Probably something very like coloring a picture for 5 year olds; or something on the morning announcements saying "Today we remember the life of...who worked for the civil rights of all people..."; or an assembly program about people who fought for civil rights with mention that the day was in commemoration of.... Same as for any other person of note. I can't see any reason his sexuality would be mentioned. Do we say Dr. M.L. King, famous civil rights leader and heterosexual?
