What Did You Do Tonight?

Hi there, come on in.  Another late night - it always bothers me to ask ya'll over at this point in the day.  True, it is Saturday.  Does that mean you can stay for awhile?  I hope so, your company makes many long hours of tired much more comfortable.  Here she comes ... alittle muted, she just woke up.  Like me, takes a bit to waken and shake off the sleepy.  There goes the nub, though, so I guess it's safe to say your touch did the trick.

Saturday night.  I spent mine as I often do, which simply means it was not a Saturday night of my youth.  Once upon a time it really didn't matter what day of the week it was - except Saturday night was like Christmas morning!  Now?  Not so much.  I can't decide if it's age, responsibility, laziness or a large amount of all three.  Then again it could very well be that I'm just boring.  Anyway, good to see you.  May I get you something?  Of course, whatever I have that you like is yours.  No, you can't have the sofa.  Think you're funny, don't you?  Ok, big shot.

What did you do tonight?

What did I do tonight? I wrote a poem.

And I rubbed Sox behind the ears, eased her fears, rewound the years.

No more tears.

How you doing, barefooted?

Great, glad you got a chance to drop in, so is Sox.

PS, Lis. Your poem covers so many bases I'm still counting ...

I felt I had to cover all my bases.

Why tonight? Quiet here, now. Are you alright?

I'm feeling lovely, actually. Thank you for asking. Everything is good.

Yea! Enjoy the feeling, you deserve every ounce of it. Sox loves you, me, too.

Hey you. Hope you're feeling better.

Boys are sick -- runny noses, so ear infections are on the way. Read Peter Pan for the 33rd time to the girl. Thought about writing the next story, but I can wait a little bit. Watch some preseason football and cursed the AP voters for makign the hated Georgia Bulldogs #1. Washed bottles. Breathed in and out. Felt a little bad for Dara Torres -- I used to cover her when we were both in Gainesville and kind of sort of based the heroine of my first (very bad) novel on her (and the forgotten, but pretty cool Nicole Haislett.) Made a late-night frozen pizza. Looked into some free photo sites (or at least cheap) photos so I can make my almost ready to launch website work. checked Monster for a new job. Went to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club site for a while and fantasized. And now I'm grateful for the edge of the soda, and to hear about your day. How are you, anyway?

Better for seeing you! Full day, huh? Keep doing that breathing thing - really seems to help with everything else.

avatar

Breathing is working. Avoiding not going as well. Letting go ... eh, still working on it. But better. Sort of.

Avoiding never goes well. Letting go can't proceed when the former is sucking all the air out of the room. Can make it hard to breathe, Matt.

I watched the Saddleback forum and then blogged. Nitey nite.

Gave my nascent love a ring at her place of employ, but quickly realized that wasn't the brightest idea I've ever had; employus interruptus, I believe, is the clinical terminology for its terminus.

Then proceeded to indulge in 2nd meal of the day consisting of insanely-delicious Mexican fare, while cracking cold hoppy-beverage & watching my beloved 49'ers grind the 'Packers into the Candlestick turf.

Yeah, tis only pre-season. But has been many years since Super Bowl ring # 5 hereabouts.

avatar

Do you have any confidence in Alex Smith? Did Rogers look like a choking dog? I'm hoping that the Packers go 1-15 (I want my Bucs to retain the overall title). Not because of Favre (who looked okay tonight) but because of my overall hostility towards all things Wisconsin-ish.

No confidence in Smith at all - particularly now that Mad-Bomber Martz is our offensive coordinator. Smith was a lousy fit to begin with -- he's a shotgun QB & Nolan tried to make him a West Coast offense QB. I think he's the prototypical fish out of water here now.

Like many hereabouts, Shaun Hill was my initial choice entering the season. Alas, JT O'Sullivan's previous experience with the Martz offense clearly shows he has a better grasp of it at this juncture.

But what really impressed me tonight was the inspired play of the D -- they were swarming like fire ants!

avatar

When Martz works, he's fun. He's a tool, but his teams are fun to watch. I'm not sure you have the speed outside to make it work, though. I'll keep my fingers crossed, because I don't like anyone else in your division.

You gonna cut smith by the end of camp?

Highly doubtful, given that the team is on the hook for approx 47 million bucks to the guy. :-/

Listening to the sports scuttlebutt hereabouts, the over/under seems an abrupt Nolan departure as more likely.

BTW, I neglected your query re Rodgers. While he is popular locally (a Cal boy, after all), I feel confident in saying that his performance tonight had GB fans feverishly clutching their rosary beads and making silent entreaties for a magical Favre return.

Yeah, he looked that bad. Poor kid.

Hey, it's our turn this year. Go, Panthers!

avatar

You know how much I love you, right?

That's why I can say, without fear or repercussion, that my beloved Buccaneers, will win the divison, beating you Pathers twice in the process.

(ducking to avoid thrown pillow and Sox's growls)

You know how much I love you back, right?

But you are SO on!

avatar

Big margins, Melissa. Big. So big they may stop playing football in Carolina after this season.

Or you'll kick our ass. Which is what I'm probably beting on.

"...they may stop playing football in Carolina after this season."

Oh, excellent idea for the Bucs. Avoid all those pesky away games.

See 'ya tomorrow.

Love the Bucs - just 'cuz they have Jon Gruden.

AND gave us Warren Sapp.

Did I tell you I'm one of those rare birds (read: despised locally) in that I'm equally fond of both the 'Niners _and_ Da Raiders?? ;-)

Grown women hurl invective in my presence, and pull their children off the sidewalk as I pass by.

Tragic, really.

Fine, gang up on me. I can take it.

Now you're BOTH SO on!

Well, you know how obstreperous we FNT's can be, darling.

avatar

Sapp retired, didn't he? I was hoping he and lynch would come home and retire as Bucs. But Lynch has gone to Boston, and that means he's dead to me.

Realize you've crashed for the night, Matt - but wished to reply in hopes you catch this menana.

Yes, Sapp retired. But you _know_ he's going to go into Canton as a Buc. 5 years hence; mark your calendar.

As for Lynch: couldn't agree more. I _despise_ all the damn Boston teams (ex-wife and I used to disagree passionately on-topic, btw. Emphasis on ex). ;-)

Nahh... from a strictly-species perogative, Panthers too damn closely related to Pumas for this man's comfort level. :->

You DID NOT just say that. Take it back.

Crap. Forgot to mention that I, too, viewed the Saddleback, uhm, thingie. The Obama part of it, anyway.

Turned it off after McSame's 3rd "my friends...".

Were I still in college, that would've made for one killer drinking game...

Shopped for groceries after being gone for 2 weeks, went for a walk, had a delicious salad and way yummy sour dough bread for dinner, watched the Saddleback Forum, blogged, gave my husband one of my super deluxe back rubs, and now the evening is mine....haven't decided yet what to do with it...What are you guys up to?

Matt, you doin' okay? Missed you last night.

avatar

I popped in for a minute last night, but I didn't want to bring the place down. I've done that enough. I'm doing all right, though. Thanks for looking out for me. I appreciate it.

Just know that if you need us, we're here...the great thing about anonymity is that you can be completely honest w/o having to filter like you do sometimes in REAL life...

Hi still! I watched the Sattleback forum as well, with hugely mixed feelings. Actually saw more of McCain, the public seemed to find it amusing to interfere with the one I cared to hear. Funny, though, as Obama was speaking a middle-aged, middle-income white woman from Virginia popped in. Said, "I'm watching that, too. He is so my man". I laughed and heartily agreed.

Great to see you!

Fed kids, perused the net, learned about various horn-rock bands of the Seventies, made smoothies for the kids, packed 'em off to bed. More blogging. This is the calm before the storm of the next semester. And I am wasting time blogging when I should be doing all the non-student things I won't have time for in 10 days.

Mmm... one of my local faves: Tower of Power. :-)

I learned more about bands I already loved, like TOP, Lighthouse and Chase, and discovered ones I hadn't previously, like Cold Blood and Ten Wheel Drive.

Friend and I caught their gig couple months ago in Berkeley. Enjoyed them so much I went ahead and purchased tix to take my daughter when they play the Fillmore in SF in October.

Oldtime memories they invoke. So sweet.

I look forward to introducing my kids to the 'old fogie' jazz/fusion/boogie stuff I love while they're still receptive: Little Feat, TOP, and another excellent Bay-area band, Hiroshima.

Hiroshima??

Am too lazy to google them at moment, but that name rings a bell somehow.

Have they been around long enough, say, for me to have caught them at the old Mabuhay Gardens??

Spent alot of my formative years there (some of it not under the influence, even!). Best. Ever. Gig had to've been Devo, back in '78, I believe.

Mid-80's jazz fusion with Japanese-American players among others. Woman named June Kuramoto, student of the traditional koto (Japanese harp). But she integrates it into the jazz fusion millieu and can really wail on it.

Saw the band when they first broke big at one of the classy old theaters on Chicago's south side. They also had taiko drums set up. What an amazing sound! These clips don't really give you a taste of when they cook. They're more ethereal here.

Wasting time blogging? What's that? Around here we have conversations. Nice to see 'ya.

Melissa, somehow I cannot imagine anyone finding you boring...but I know what you mean. It's been a long, long time since the Sat. nights of my youth, but I can see it in my kids already. At the ripe old ages of 30 and 31 they are both pretty much home bodies. They'd rather sit w/ family and/or good friends and visit rather than be out boozin' it up and gettin' rowdy.

I think its a nice time of life...

You're on to something there, still. And obviously taught your children well. We rapidly forget those youthful dizzy nights, but time spent with loved ones lives on.

I gotta turn in. Little bastards will be up soon enough. Y'all have good dreams.

'Night, Matt. Sweetest of dreams.

I just finished watching the forum, I watched the second airing of it since I was out earlier. Now CNN is rehashing it. Earlier I went to Hempfest to register voters. It was discouraging. I will now call it Apathyfest.

It's summer, Bad. And it's OK. I am watching same, having missed much of it earlier. Watching McCain grow angrier and angrier when discussing "war related" activities gave me chills. Yet, so well received? ... but only initially. Give it a day or so.

Good to see you.

David Gergen (sp?) Is a pundit that I always enjoy listening to. He has exceptional insight and always seems fair and positive. He made a very interesting point just now on how the candidates' answers to the question of whether there is evil in the world. He spoke of John McCain being very Teddy Roosevelt and in-your-face and focused aggressively outward on the fight against evil. Whereas Obama is more careful and speaks of evil in various forms and said that we have to be careful when confronting it to not actually perpetrate it in the name of doing good. He spoke of McCain having a more Bushesque view in that sense and Obama being very different. I thought it apt.

I agree, a very perceptive take on his part. Would that the viewing audience and MSM note the nuances therein. I did, but those of us who understand that Obama frames his world differently usually get it. I want a President who thinks - not one who has a knee-jerk reaction. The public at large has enough of that working against us. I want a President who thinks, and eventually, thoughtfully responds to a situation or crisis better than than we.

Yes, me too. It's what we all need. McCain is so completely defined by war and fighting, such a huge aspect of who he is. It's so very unbalanced. But those stories he has are going to get him some votes. He's also a likeable guy in a discussion or interview setting, his jokes are amusing. We can't get sucked back into that mentality that gave us Bush where people voted for the guy who would just push some emotional buttons and make a few jokes and they would feel like he's a buddy or something.

The guy you want to have a beer with, right? I don't want to have a beer with my President. I have regular guy and gal friends for that. I want someone who has more than stories and knows what that means. Who looks forward, not back at times of glory long since over.

I still have faith in us. McCain in some limited settings may indeed be likeable, his jokes amusing. The American people are really deeper than that, and it is that adult perception that Barak Obama personifies.

The ones that are deeper than that need to be sure to vote. I wonder what percentage of voters are the "low information" voters.

You're up awfully late there missy, I'm a few hours behind you and I'm getting sleepy. G'night.

You're right, Bad. 'Night. Hope to see you soon.

Morning, all. Have a fabulous Sunday and I'll hope, as always, to see you tonight.

Melissa
