What Bob Said, What Obama Should Say
Bob Somersby over at Daily Howler once again lays out "Bob's Law", describing how the press and the Republicans portray Democratic candidates. Usually it's to make the Democrat look lightwight, effeminized, hysterical, a dandy. (Except for Hillary - there it's the hyper-hysterical harpie or a testosterone freak). So the "progressive blogosphere" responded to an ad making him look like a young shallow ditzy blonde pop star by invoking sex and race. Hmmm, that does seem like a blonde moment, doesn't it? Especially once the polls roll in to confirm that most whites didn't see it that way - you got your chain yanked once, and you yanked it yourself a second time. This, as Bob notes, is how elections get lost. Some people are now complaining that The One ad is racist - when Oprah invoked the same phrase in South Carolina at a stadium. Acting irrational and overly sensitive only plays into Republican stereotypes of progressives.
Campaigns do use negative ads, and it's a good thing. People want to understand real differences between candidates, not just what they say about the issues. If Gore had used more negative ads against Bush, the last 8 years might not have happened. We're choosing a president often based on vague issues like character and ability to choose, not just an energy package. Being a lightweight and a newbie are serious (how did Bush respond when the Chinese grabbed our plane?), reasonable charges, as is being overconfident (didn't McCain say the Iraqis would welcome us as heroes?). But the blogosphere thinks McCain should stick to ineffective boring ads because that's somehow the American way, that in the Broder world Americans dislike negativity. Well, funny that - if you read Maureen Dowd you find someone who's made a successful career out of being terminally snide and negative.
So the next time McCain comes out with a negative ad, don't respond with sticks-and-stones or "teacher, he played the racist card", come back with one more negative, but funnier, wittier, more painful by far. People came for a fight, give it to them. McCain has so much real dirt on him, so many flaws, so much ineptness, so much to laugh at - yet idiots in the blogosphere want to attack him for $520 shoes or divorcing his wife? Sure, do it, inspire his supporters and get a chuckle in your head so you can remember how you once cleverly heckled President McCain.

I apologise for the slightly jumbled thoughts, I was covered by kittens trying to write this quick.
I would tend to agree with your sentiment, and offer a refinement that "negative" ads come in two flavours: smart and just mean. Most of the time when one says Obama should "go negative," it is interpreted as being mean and nasty, as the Republicans are. Even an exceptionally clever put-down is only that.
Negative ads can be scathing, hard-hitting and fair--and be made come off that way. Unfortunately there are very few Democratic adpersons with the requisite skills; there are some, most recently of the Clinton campaign, who can do the brutish and juvenile GOP-style. Obama's people seem a bit timid although I think Obama himself delivers some destructive lines--but too subtly. I think they only recognize the two options of the absurd "what happened to the politics of hope" inanities and the complete ignore-mode.
We can find that appropriate voice. The thing is, it will take some calibrating and a presidential campaign is not the best place to explain the over- and underreaches that are bound to happen. Despite this, it might be worth going for.

Dude, highlight these damn things better.
That was awesome - I'm in love. Policy wise that is.
Hot hot hot. Call the WaPo. Call Arnie. Call the fire department, douse me out.
And the VP selection? Out of this world. How long to make that incredible decision? 15 seconds? That's the kind of leadership we need.

It figures that you two lummoxs (lummoxi?) would completely miss the import of what Dr. Roo just said. "The kittens are trying to write!" Here you're presented with a stunning evolutionary breakthrough - perhaps the first challengers to humankind's throne - and you respond with.... duh huh?
Personally, I'm bursting with questions. Has the apparent development of a "group mind" by the kittens enabled them to overcome the absence of an opposable thumb? Are kittens - politically - best considered "independents?" Why do they find Obama's sense of humour to be overly-subtle? Are they registered to vote yet - and if not, SHOULD they be? If so, at what age?
TPM - home of the cultivated mind. Bah.

Kittenhood's End. Right now they're just dancing around in tandem with balls of string, but soon they'll be worldwide blogging. We can only wait. And observe. And know our time is finished.

Are you going to hang onto grudges, or are you going to ride the new wave? Let bygones be bygones, we're here to electrify the body politic. People keep asking for the younger generation, and here we dish them up a la carte. And still we're criticized. How brutal is life.

Well, since Democrats never win presidential elections, they haven't the faintest idea how to do it. No clue whatsoever. Zilch.
Democrats should do what George Costanza did: The Opposite of what their instincts tell them to do. Only then will it be clear what kind of ads Dems should run.

P.S. It's Somerby (not Somersby). I hate it when NCSteve spells it with the extra "s," but I refuse to correct him. ;-)

Just a typo, usually I get it right. Perhaps it was all the Jane Austen references I've seen lately, Somersby sounded more staid and Victorian.

Yes, you do get it right. I was mainly worried NCSteve was corrupting you.

Yeah, but.... now my instincts are telling me to listen to YOU, gasket. And you're a Democrat. Clearly, I'm in one hell of a predicament here. Or maybe I should listen to Des? Yeah... RIGHT! When kittens can type, maybe.

Obama should stick McCain to Britney & Paris - and keep on doing it til he explodes. Which, he will. Like you say, use their words & his, back-to-back. McCain SAID it was just a joke, and HE created the linkage, so now... you've got a whole world of stupid to open on his ass. Your basic 12 year old could do this. (That's a compliment, Des.)
Maybe even better, since McCain brought the TWO of them in, make their words his and Bush's. Like Bush & McCain sharing birthday cake during Katrina. Paris Hilton quote? “The way I see it, you should live everyday like its your birthday."
Or start using her catchphrase "That's HOT!" as McCain's response to Bush's various screw-up's.... Like, let's invade Iraq.
Or McCain meeting Bush at the White House - “It's really exciting, ... I've been wanting to do this forever, and now it's finally coming together. I'm so happy.”
The material runs forever.... “There's no master plan! I'm just gonna be me and hope it all works out!”... “I'm attracted to guys who are really confident and make conversation.”
Get people to dress up like the two, and visit McCain. Better yet, send them to Obama's rallies - and let Obama riff off them.

Y'see? It took you precisely 10 minutes to start picking away at YOUR choice, Paris Hilton. I have no idea how Hillary kept you clowns in line.
Not a bad day for O, though. More punch? Stuck McCain to the right people - not just Exxon & oil execs, but to CHENEY. Just saying that name is nasty politics. O got a T-Boone quote agreeing with him. Sounded not bad mocking McCain for the air gauge stunt. Plus, he looked good calling the audible on the Pledge. Almost like he was enjoying it, now that he was into it.
And here, two things to cheer you up. 1) No Bayh, and.... you KNOW you need it...2) SHUT UP AND DRIVE.

So we complain about Rove's tactics, but we want Rove's opponents to adopt them? The principal reason Obama appeals to so many is that he proposes an entirely different political ambience, one that rejects what so many of his putative supporters urge on him. America will be a better place if all follow Obama's example.

It's always tempting to strike back when struck. I think it's always worth exploring all options, but somehow I've found that Obama does have the ability to push back with intelligence and derision toward their idiocy, as he did today in Ohio: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/05/obama-calls-mccain-out-af_n_117142.html
But I also agree that he needs ads running that are as iconic and memorable as McCains, but in his case, also intelligent, on topic and relevant to the issues. It takes more skill to do a campaign based on truth and issues instead of on childish attacks. It's clear that the Republicans are experts at childishness.
Obama is not Kerry. It's also early, it's the silly summer season, the Olympics are about to suck up bandwidth (and Obama is going to be advertising), and the conventions are around the corner. It's not time to panic or start citing polls comparing this race to previous ones.
It's nerve wracking, I agree. I think Obama should be way ahead, and seeing McCain's stupidity, with a lot of MSM help, apparently succeed in raising his stock is sickening, and a horrible comment on our electoral process.
But I also believe it will wear thin over time and Obama's much cleaner approach and much more scathing and intelligent counterattacks will change things.
I would never discount the depths that the Republicans will go, nor their ability to affect public opinion, but I still think we should find a way to do it with our integrity intact and while still wearing our grown-up pants.
