The Decline and Fall of Kwame Kilpatrick

avatar

Kwame Kilpatrick, the embattled mayor of Detroit, has been ordered to jail for the night by Judge Ronald Giles.

Giles ruled that Kilpatrick violated the terms of his personal bond when he went to Windsor, Ontario, to meet with city leaders there about selling control of the tunnel that connects Detroit and Windsor.  Kilpatrick gave no prior notice to the court, whereas his bond contained instructions to provide sealed notice of all travel details 48 hours before leaving the jurisdiction.

This is just the latest in the sad saga of a man who first became mayor of Detroit at age 31.  Since then, he's:

...assembled a 30-man "executive protection unit" with full-time police officers;

...bought his wife a Lincoln Navigator with a city credit card;

...cheated on the same wife with his chief of staff;

...fired several police officers for threatening to blow the whistle on his excesses;

...paid off the officers to the tune of $8.4 million only after proof of the firings' motivation came out;

..concealed the real reason for the settlement from the Detroit City Council;

...lied about the whole sordid package under oath;

...and sent numerous text messages about these events and his active conspiring to conceal them.  On city-owned devices.  With a service that kept messages going back for years.  In accordance with an executive order - signed by Kilpatrick - saying that any text messages sent on city devices were city property.

Now, he's such a millstone that his mother, US Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, barely survived her three-way primary yesterday - despite being a six-term incumbent and a major player in the Congressional Black Caucus.  Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she will personally preside over removal hearings for Kilpatrick next month, if she deems them necessary.

For those who may not have followed the exploits of the Player Mayor, the Detroit Free Press has your one-stop shop for all things Kwame.  For those who want to skip straight ahead to the more salacious details, have a gander at some of the text messages in question.

And even sader than his personal saga:
Fire a couple of police officers, over getting laid on the side - go to jail.
Fire 8 Federal prosecutors, while trying to screw the whole country - win a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Moral of the story - The dude is no Alberto Gonzalez!

Good riddance, from an old constituent.
