Sex, Oil, and Misogyny: McCain at Buffalo Chip
Warning: this post contains content not suitable for younger readers... as unsuitable as John McCain is for the White House.
John
McCain's appearance at the Buffalo Chip Campground at the Sturgis rally
brought these blatant signs of misogyny from him and his supporters.
- McCain suggests his wife should enter the Miss Buffalo Chip pageant.
- McCain suggests buying t-shirts depicting nearly naked women to cheer up the campaign staffers.
- "Show your tits for McCain; show your ass for Obama," read a handmade sign created by McCain fan in the audience (as reported on SDPB's Dakota Digest, 2008.08.05; to be broadcast again at 5:30 CDT).
We’re not going to pay $4 dollars a gallon for gas (when I am president) because we are going to drill offshore and we are going to drill now. We are doing to drill here and we are going to drill now.... My opponent doesn’t want to drill, he doesn’t want nuclear power. He wants to inflate your tires. [Mosheh Oinounou, "McCain Rallies Bikers at Sturgis," Fox News, 2008.08.04]
[Brace yourself, church ladies.]
Drill here, drill now: a male metaphor for raping the earth. In word choice (one blunt syllable, starting hard, ending soft) and in repetition (McCain says it four times in quick succession), McCain is evoking sexual imagery.
Wanting to "drill" is an expression of male power, and McCain says Obama doesn't want that power, "doesn't want to drill." Instead, Obama wants to "inflate your tires." That mockery intends to evoke an image of a servile, effeminate Obama giving you a blow job.
Think I sound offensive? This is just the coded language of the old white man who wants to be your president... and can cavalierly joke about his wife baring her breasts at the Buffalo Chip. I'm sick of presidential campaigns based on macho BS. It's time to elect a President who respects women, and John McCain's performance at Sturgis yesterday proves he ain't it.

Yeah, like the way Obama showed respect for the reporter when he called her 'sweetie'?

You and Cory deserve each other; you both are reaching! Return to reality, both of you! It is nice out here.

You are so right about language. By the way, what's McCain going to do when he tries to drill off Florida and all those birds fly up in his face?

Unfortunately, I think you're reading WAAAY too much into what McCain was saying. However, if that's what he actually was getting at, that would be hilarious and refreshing. If you are offended by something a politician says, then that means the politician is willing to say stuff that will actually offend people. I don't want someone that tries to be as inoffensive as possible to win votes. If McCain really was making raunchy jokes in a public arena while running for president of the United States, that's awesome. He'll lose your vote, but the man's got balls and has nothing to hide.

Which means that maybe you're a lot more like the "church ladies" you make fun of than you think you are ;)

I saw him, McCain, speaking and he looked pathetic. I pitty the wife though, the poor beautiful woman will not be drilled much because she will be too busy changing diapers soon.
