SAY WHAAATTTTTT??????
I was switching between CSPAN and MSNBC. I generally don't mind some of the interviews on MSBC. I am not a Matthews hater, like a lot of people seem to be.
But I just heard Matthews say this, in the context that democracy is a hard thing to teach (I agree), unlike what Bush might dictate. He said "the British were teaching the Indians for 200 years"..
Something like that.
My head exploded. Chris, was that what the Brits were doing, all those centuries when they were killing, brutalizing us, when they were occupying us?? When they were systematically stripping our land of resources, declaring ridiculous laws to benefit England (like not being allowed to make our own salt!!). When they allowed millions of Indians to suffer from famine, from deprivation, from injustice? Is that what you think the British were doing??

Mahatma Gandhi must be turning over in his grave. So I guess the Mahatma was protesting non-violently against the imposition of democracy, eh?
I have to get back to work, else I'd rant for another hour.
I'll leave you to Google on the history of India. And yes, I know, history is written by the winners. Factor that in.

So sorry it offended you, glad to hear that such a well educated and interesting person is becoming a citizen, My parents were both immigrants, actually.

As AM points out upthread, the mindset Matthews displayed to us (which is proudly, ignorantly, arrogantly held by our Republican Party) is the same one that has enabled our continued presence in Iraq.
On another note, congratulations on your forthcoming American citizenship. Good to have you on board!
