Ditto that.

Kind of discouraging that TPMs new wunderkind found it appropriate to put up a front-page thread regarding the sex-life of a non-candidate, no?

Yeah.

Even when his private life has or could have had very public consequences?

"could have"----your words
This is strictly a private matter.
This is none of our business. None of your business. None of my business. None of the media's business.

How will that happen, Lalo?

As posted elsewhere, there is a speculation going on in certain circles that Edwards is going public now because he was unable to reach an agreement with her and McGovern that would ensure they keep quiet.
Also, TalkLeft has a theory that there may be a criminal angle to the story - whether or not Hunter was a Presidential Candidate. That puts the role of National Enq in a completely different context.
This makes me think that this is not going away as a simple private failing, but has larger political implications.

... Hunter was BLACKMAILING a Presidential Candidate...
oops

And you wrote this post as a way to not discuss it? A counterintuitive strategy if ever there was one.

When it comes to John Edwards, this is fun! Nice to see all the young stupid fools who supported that worthless trailer trash scumbag ambulance chaser get his/their just desserts. What an ugly woman too.

Good to know you are without sin, albeit marginal. You do know what the word "player" connotes?

Only marginally, I suspect.

Why did he ask the PUBLIC for money to support his campaign? There are plenty of people invested in him that deserve some answers. Not only does HE look like a fool, but his supporters do as well. He should put his big-boy panties on, answer their questions, and then request privacy instead of coming clean and stating he's not going to talk about it anymore. Well, BS, he owes his supporters more than that. (No, I have not contributed to his most recent run for office, but I have in the past.)

It is none of our business. We are electing a president. Whether he (or she, I suppose) prefers to go around without pants for easier access is not our concern so long as he does his job well.

I can't believe you wouldn't want answers to his lies. Should we question his judgement? If it were a Republican I'm sure this whole board would want to pounce on him. But do what you have to do, that is your purogative.

Keep in mind that his contributors' money went to pay off the woman. That would bother the hell out of me. Frankly, I hope he does adhere to his promise of not speaking about it again. I mean, what would people want? Details of the affair?
No, it has gone from personal to public, and now it should remain personal; but his public life will remain tainted, and it is his own fault. BTW, saying that he is to blame means nothing. Who else could he blame? He would look like a bigger cad if he said, "Well, you know my wife was sick, and so I just had to..."
I think when he gets asked the inevitable questions, he should simply say, "Please give me the same privacy that you accord John McCain and Rudy Giulianni. After all, they LEFT their wives and married the women THEY had affairs with."

My understanding is that the campaign's finances are in order. Any wrongdoing there should certainly be prosecuted just as any other misappropriation of funds: it is usually irrelevant why someone would embezzle. There has been no evidence presented of that, however.

You are absolutely correct roo, but as you can see, even liberal and fairly well educated Democrats cannot resist the temptation to gossip and obsess about this man's private conduct. they simply see the cheese and they must bite on it! They not only cannot resist they do not wish to resist!
None of them who so easily pass judgement and offer endless analysis on this matter would have nearly as much to say or feel as passionately about the major war crimes occuring daily of the United States, it's leaders and it's armed forces in the middle east and Agghanistan. And the mortgage crisis...? Well, there are all sorts of boring details one gets mucked up in. National health care? Well, most "good" people have health insurance so it's not that burning of an issue. And on and on and on.
It's just easier and more fun to get all worked up about something simple where we can moralize about the failings of others and so on. It's pretty sad shit if ya ask me.

I am more than happy to let private people have private lives.
I can't do that with people who want to be the goddamn president of the United States. It's not about me - it's about my country.
Edwards ran for president knowing this was out there - I will not forgive him for that after we've been through these last 8 years.

So you draw no line at all, between public and private?
Tena, mon amour, it means only "THE ONE" can rise to your standard. Meaning someone super-human. Not like the rest of us.

well, not like YOU, anyway

Screw that. Americans are such idiots, and they elect other american idiots. This country is so ridiculous.
August 9, 2008 3:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
Agreed, Teena. With the exception of the religious right, we are no longer a puritanical society in terms of private choices. As voters, however, we do have a "right to know," a right to informed consent about anything that might jeopardize the results of this pivotal election.

Yeah, right.
The problem is the American voter who asks for politicans to be a bit honest about things. And we're to sit back and let John be vetted for VP or even for a cabinet position?
Lying. Hypocrisy. The cover-up gets 'em every tme.
A good politician should really know the American public and the American voter. John and Elizabeth have both revealed themselves to either not know or not care. Shrug.
Now, they've had privacy since 2006 and John will return to private life and their privacy. First, the whole thing will get a thorough airing--the up side is that McCain has been driven to the sidelines temporarily.

Hmmm, not with you on this one. He put himself in this spotlight. Don't think he was forced to run again and he knew this was out there waiting for him. I'm held responsible for the stupid shit I do, why is JE due a pass?

Well, as Will Rogers said, it ain't the things you don't know that get you in trouble. It's the things you know for sure that ain't so.
Just because sneaking around and peeking into windows is your thing doesn't mean that Sen. Edwards' love affairs are in the public domain. You might want to consider making a purchase at the Life store.

No. I wouldn't. I consider the american public's facination with the sex lives and private lives of other's unhealthy and in an idealistic sense unamerican. We are all human. To me it is not extraordinary for humans to cheat on their spouses or break their agreements... what matters more is how they take responsbility for their failings. I think it's great when things go well but how people deal with the breakdown's of humanity is revealing of character.
I would still want John Edwards as a VP or an attorney general because I believe he would do a good job.
Considering the slime that we have in leadership now, this human failing of Edwards does nothing to persuade me otherwise.
