McCain Volunteers Cindy for Biker's Bikini(less) Beauty Contest.
Fox reports that McCain spoke before 50,000 bikers at their 68th gathering at Sturgis, S.D. Playing to the crowd and showing yet again how much he loves and respects his wife...
McCain also joked that he urged Cindy to participate in a campground beauty pageant that was taking place during his speech.
“I was looking at the Sturgis schedule and noticed that you have a beauty pageant and so I encouraged Cindy to compete. I told her, with a little luck, she could be the only woman ever to serve as both the First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip,” he said to cheers.
The HuffRept notes that the "Miss Buffalo Chip" contest frequently involves topless (and occasionally bottomless) participants. There's also a youtube video of last year's contest that's borderline safe for work and way over the line in terms of trashiness. View (and vote for McCain) at your own risk.
He was a Tailhooker, right?

Gee, the prude wing of the Democratic Party comes out again.
First, you note he "joked". I.e. he wasn't serious.
Second, there's nothing wrong with his thinking his wife is beautiful, and as long as we have beauty contests, expressing she could win seems none too bad. Okay, the contest itself is pretty stupid with a little butt shaking and banana eating, but what do you expect? It's a biker convention + add-ons. That's their life, that's what they do for fun, so leave 'em to it. Would you rather McCain be a fundamentalist Christian completely against any mention of sex?
McCain's writers got that one figured out. In 1972, Muskie did a long train ride down the coast while George Wallace showed up one day at the Talladega speedway and pumped up a crowd larger than everyone Muskie saw that week.Fourth, Kid Rock followed his speech. Monster, should have gone up on stage together - turn him from Maverick to Maverock.
Anyway, as long as progressives cringe and wince at redneck lifestyle and values, they're going to have trouble getting the vote. Leave people be. They're not bothering you, let them do what they want. How many hip-hoppers could move to country music or Southern Rock, but Kid Rock managed pretty smoothly. It's all just good fun in the end - pull up a cooler and join in instead of sitting around ogling.
That's the difference - Paris Hilton wouldn't take their life, Kid Rock would. Who do you think they trust?

You know, I like an attractive, naked woman as well as the next man (as long as there's no silicone involved), but here's my problem...
Which part of the conservative "red-necked" wing does he need? the Bible-thumpers? or the beer swillers? Which more probably represents "the likely voter"?
Given McCain's personal history, I have every confidence that he's more comfortable at a bikini contest drinking beer and doing "carrier slides", but half the voters in America are women, most of whom would choose not to be in the Miss Buffalo Chip pageant and a big chunk of his alleged base is "Christian Conservative".
It just seems like he's singing to the wrong choir here. He should stick to the Sausage Haus circuit...

Ride on Bjorn! Why didn't he just pass her around to the boys, like any other biker chick. That just reeks of family values!

The funny thing, Bjorn, is that yes indeed there are women who would choose to be in the Miss Buffalo Chip or other pageants, work in a strip club, be a hostess at Hooters, be on stage in Vegas, join in on Girls Gone Wild, do a sexy video cam, or a variety of other types of work/fun that you might think of as degrading to women. And funny thing, there are women who watch this kind of activity and enjoy it too. Now, is that a majority? I don't know the statistics on it. But Dolly Parton made it big not just on her music, and that's appealing not just to men, and I might dare say there are a few church goers in that community of admirers. So somewhere in there's a few contradictions or certainly a misunderstanding of what most people think it means to be conservative Christian with attitudes about sex. And perhaps some focus on that contradiction for the broad scope of "working people" and other stereotypes is needed as well.
