McCain picks Palin, and stares

avatar

don't know if anyone noticed this, but watch Palin's speech...as she starts talking directly about the 18,000,000 women and the glass ceiling being shattered, John McCain is STARING at her butt. It lasts for around 15 seconds up until they start clapping...>>>He has never fought for equal rights for women, and was the final holdout for the MLK holiday..This is a total pander

LOL--I saw that, too! And I'm sure that sharp-eyed Cindy noticed it...

I haven't seen the whole Palin coming-out extravaganza, so I missed the ass thing. But the 30-second clips currently running on Fox and CNN show something equally inappropriate: after introducing Palin on the podium, McCain kisses her. My wife and I have seen this maybe 6 times over two hours this evening, and each time we asked ourselves: what the hell? Now, I am unsure about the history or protocol behind kissing your running mate. However, I am pretty sure that Gov. Palin is equally ambivalent about it, given the disdainful look on her face, as Senator McCain pulled away from her post-kiss.

She looked like a child forced to eat something yucky for dinner.

Of all the trashy discourse that has coarsed through this campaign season (the racism, classism, and name calling have been ugly), I think that Palin will become a cypher for the crass sexism that everyone knows is part of contemporary conservatism (especially Palin's brand of religious conservatism). She already attracts this kind of attention: at 10 o'clock on Fox, Newt Gingrich announced "she's 45, with four kids, and she looks like that!" Then there's Rush, with a hottie on the ticket. And her earliest introduction to the nation was attended by a kiss by her boss.

Look, Palin's an accomplished politician, I guess. But this is a horrid miscalculation on behalf of the Republicans because she will bring out all the ugly, causal misogyny of her Republican handlers. All of these comparisons of Palin to Hillary are transparently phony. Hillary would never have allowed Obama to kiss her because Hillary understands that all politicians need self-respect, and that, at this level, Presidents and Vice-Presidents must treat one another as equals. McCain expected Palin to acquiesce, and she did, shame-faced.

Not only is she no Hillary. She's no Angela Merkel, shrugging off the shrub.

"Look, Palin's an accomplished politician, I guess."

She won the governorship two years ago with less than 50% (48.3%) of the vote--the indy candidate got something like 9%. Total votes for Palin that launches her into a position to be "qualified" as president of the United States: 114,697.

Now that's an accomplishment you can believe in.
