Is Evan Bayh the VP? Let's Look at His Profile.

A new post from The Left Anchor.  You can read the rest of our vice-presidential profiles here.

Oh, shit.  It's gonna be Bayh
It's not official yet, but Bayh sure is talking like he's already got
the job, and there's speculation the deal's gonna go down tomorrow at a
joint appearance in Indiana.  So, we're going to do a short profile of
the man.

Evan Bayh is the junior Senator from Indiana.  He was elected in 1998 after having served two terms as governor.  According to a SUSA poll from this past February, Bayh remains very popular in his home state.  He holds an approval rating of 58 percent overall, and maintains a 50 percent of better rating among all major demographics, even among both pro-life and pro-choice voters.  As a former popular governor, and current senator, Bayh could conceivably put Indiana -- a state the Dems haven't won in 40 years -- back into play.  And unlike, Ted Strickland, or Joe Biden, Bayh doesn't undercut Obama's message of youth, reform, and change.

On the issues, let's look at the worst parts of Bayh's voting history (h/t NeuvoLiberal}:

  1. Bayh co-sponsored Lieberman's Iraq war resolution, as did McCain. All three of them voted for the war.
  1. Bayh is the main sponsor/author of the Iran resolution S.Res. 580 which  Lieberman and McCain are co-sponsoring. The house version of this bill, H.Con.Res. 362, calls for a (naval and other) blockade of Iran, an act of war.
  1. Bayh voted for the FISA amendments/immunity bill, as did Lieberman. McCain would've voted for it had he not skipped the vote; he voted for an earlier version of the bill which contained retroactive immunity.
  1. Bayh and McCain voted for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment (McCain was a co-sponsor).
  1. Bayh, McCain and Lieberman voted for cluster bombing civilians and refugees (by voting against a bill proposed to ban cluster bombing.)
  1. All three of them voted for Patriot Act Reauthorization in 2006.
  1. He was the chairman of the DLC during 2001-2005 (coinciding with the worst Republican-lite behavior by the Democratic party, including many of them voting for the war.) Lieberman preceded him as the DLC chair.

  2. He even voted for building a fence along the Mexican border.
  1. Sen. Bayh also supports extending the death penalty.
  1. Bayh also foolishly entertains the notion of creating private Social Security accountts.

Bayh was also head of the DLC from 2001-2005.  This was the very same organization that convinced the party that they were better off supporting the war and watched over as the party lost seat after seat after seat.  Which to to say, I would never want Bayh's old school strategy anywhere near the presidency.  But it's not all bad news with Bayh.  According to 538, he is far more liberal than the state in which he resides, and only slightly to the right of the average Democratic senator.  He votes the party line nearly 90% of the time.  He may be a conservative Democrat, but he doesn't appear to be a blue dog.  And I've got to admit, he gives a hell of a stump speech.

As alwasy, rec's are most appreciated.

As always, good thoughtful posts are appreciated.

Even if they send shivers up my spine.

Huh? John Edwards was a co-sponsor too?

If you two are right, then... Kill. Me. Now.

If you two are wrong, then... You. Must. Die.

Because this kind of torture goes beyond what even Cheney would propose.

Bayh? Vice-President choice?

Oh God. Oh no. No. nooooooooo. Let this evil pass!

Unbelievably maladroit!

No, I won't believe it. I can't believe it!

After the Chinese Water Torture all through June and July, we get this, death by skinning, one dermal layer at a time. Worse than staring at the sun till blind. Would I were Oedipus.

Oedipus, eh? I think I'll leave that one..... right..... there.

The most misunderstood Greek - still dissed by sinus-challenged Canucks.

You're not my mother, don't tell me what to do.

Luuuuuuuuuuke. I am your father......

Ok. Maybe not the smartest thing I've ever said.

Ugh. He also voted for a constitutional ammendment against flag burning. What is wrong with this guy?

To be fair, I think that was cover legislation to derail a real effort.

Bayh is a vacuous talking hairdo DLC dead ender. He couldn't even swing IN democrats for Clinton, let alone be able secure IN 11 EC votes in Nov.

Yeah, 11. Big deal. If the point of a VP selection is to swing a usually red state to the Ds, then Bayh is really an illogical choice.

I don't think Bayh will be the selection. He is serving the purpose now of distracting the chatterers to the point that CW is he will be the pick.

Bayh is a poll-tested follower of whatever the good people of his state support (no disrespect to Indianans). I'd be surprised if he's ever had an original thought in his life. He strikes me as very Dan Quayle and this is from a Hillary supporter that was never enthused by Bayh even when he was supporting her.

And even with Bayh's support, Hillary only barely won Indiana because he is bland. Does the Obama campaign think him as VP will be such a big help? What does he bring to the ticket besides being from the Joe Lieberman wing of the party?

Uh, Dij, there's no such thing as an "Indianan". We're called "Hoosiers." Although none of us knows why.

I thought it was short for, "Hoosier Daddy?"

Jeez, Donal! :)

There's an electronics store in my town called "Hoosier Daddy." So, Donal, I'll give you points for being funny but not for originality.

Interesting... to be fair I was going to say OTHERS. Sorry Orlando. New Yorkers view of the world :).

Yes, I know. To New Yorkers, the rest of us are anthropological oddities. I can deal with it. As long as you never say "Indianans" again.

But us Left Coasters don't care about the New Jack City crowd..their time is over!

We've got the ocean, the surfboards, the birkenstocks, the furo's, the vinyards, the starbucks, all the things that make for our Yuppie Paradise.

Only deficit is that we have to get the NYT from them rather than print us one of our own.

Only problem is that you also got Californians.....

Good old former governor Tom McCall knew what to do about that: "Visit, but please don't stay!"

I share your concerns, but if he does end up on the bottom of the ticket, then we can fight against him in the next open primary. For the time being, the VP spot would deprive him of all power.

Like your new avatar Dijamo,

I'm no media consultant but even I know that Bayh cuts right against Obama's branding.

New approach outsider versus beltway insider.

Hope and audacity versus politics-as-usual

Vision versus tired out old school approaches.

This coupling works like attaching a uhaul trailer to a corvette.

Thanks :) Trying out that subliminal advertising with Obama-Clinton, although I'd be content with Obama-Clark or Obama-Biden too. I'll get behind the ticket regardless, but I am hoping for a VP candidate that can be a fierce defender and hit back on the GOP smear machine. Bayh I don't think has it in him.

Yeah, I didnt want to say it because I'm not sure of the facts, but my impression is he can't handle himself in a fight, especially a dirty one.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is my pick were I advising BHO.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz? Please.

From Steve Clemons last March.

Starting at 10 am today, a number of progressive blogs are going to encourage their readers to call the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to complain about the unwillingness of DCCC Red-to-Blue Program Debbie Wasserman Scultz's refusal to assist Democratic contenders challenging her pro-Cuba embargo Republican House of Representative pals Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and Mario Diaz-Balart.

Here is a clip from the Washington Post's "The Sleuth":

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) is getting brutally walloped in the liberal blogosphere for refusing to endorse the Democratic challengers to three potentially vulnerable GOP incumbents in Florida.

Liberal bloggers are irate that Wasserman Schultz, who co-chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Red-to-Blue program, has declined to endorse the Democrats running to unseat Cuban American Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Lincoln Diaz-Balart and his brother, Mario Diaz-Balart.

Wasserman Schultz says she doesn't want to stab GOP members of her own delegation in the back. But liberal bloggers say she's killing her own while aiding and abetting the enemy.

Just for the record, I'm not in favor of knocking out all Republicans either -- so perhaps I have a bit of the Wasserman Schultz sin in my own file. I was for instance supportive of Maryland Eastern Shore anti-Iraq war Republican Wayne Gilchrest who lost his primary battle recently.

But the Diaz-Balart brothers and Ros-Lehtinen are not moderate in any sense of the word, are embracers of Bush's wars, and have been responsible for sustaining a counter-productive embargo of Cuba by the United States that 183 nations of the world voted against us on this past year in the United Nations.

Nobody's perfect!

And DWS might bring Florida with her! What would you rather have Florida or Indiana?

my two cents...

"It was during one of those sessions that she brought a Republican elephant bobblehead to the floor and said House Republicans don't know how to say no to big oil companies. Like the bobblehead, she said Republicans can't move their heads side-to-side, only up and down."

"They only know how to say, 'Yes Mr. Speaker, yes Mr. President, yes CEO of oil company, I'm happy to do your bidding and whatever it is that you like,'" she said, jostling the bobblehead and moving her own head in an exaggerated nod."

_________

I like that. She also knows how to handle herself in interviews like the one she had with Brit Hume of Faux News.

I just don't see that same spark in Bayh.

Another good reason to not select Bayh is that it would remove a democratic senator from a state likely to have a republican governor to appoint a rep replacement.

Yeah, I don't like the choice, and I hope the rumors aren't true. The evidence is pretty circumstantial at this point, but... I'd say he's sitting in the top three at this point with Kaine and Sebelius.

Just pick it already, so we can get over the grief.

What's Bayh's message - "I was totally duped on the war" or "Obama doesn't mean anything he's said about Iraq, he's really a super-hawk like me, and I'll be your next Dick Cheney, in bed with the neocons".

It cannot be Bayh. Period end. Full stop. His voting record is immutable and contradicts "Change we can believe in." Obama/Axelrod are not that stupid. Deer in headlights, occasionally, but not that stupid.
If it turns out to be true, then pass the hemlock.

You forgot one important fact.Mark Penns wife was a long time staffer of Bayh.

That just made my yellow fur fall off.

BTW, those stats are no good without the context. Saying that Bayh is only just a little bit to the right of your normal Democrat in Congress sounds so reassuring. Now consider this: Congress only "enjoys" about a 7% approval rating now that they've turned their backs on the 2006 mandate that instructed them to go after the runaway corruption, the Bohemian Rooster family values, the lying warmongering bullshit, the no-bid cronyism, the NSA Peeping Toms, the nouveau-Mussolini "unitary presidency," the enormous deficit to be paid for by your grandchildren and enjoyed by the players who vacation at Bohemian Grove bragging how they been fucking us and feeding us beans.

Blue?

Red?

I don't see Blue and Red. I see one great big Purple thang coming at my backside. And pardon the political punnery, but Obama has already deepened three shades from high yellow into a magnificent and aristocratic royal blue and the summers not even over yet.

Interesting to see the bar rection took off with the hidden clots. Bad joke on female shopping hapts.

Would you like to buy a vowel with that?

The vowels are the easy part. Figuring out what the hell I was trying to say probably costs $1000 or more. Oh well, you should know more about black holes and eclipses than I.

Des, I warned you about drinking while posting. See what happens? :)

I wasn't drinking *while* posting, but there may have been one or two prior to posting.

And actually you said I should relax more, so I did it the best way I could.

Relaxing to you maybe

Nerve-racking to those of us who wanted to call Security.
