I'm Done

Ok, I've had my fun and entertainment exploiting the idiocy and weakness of Governor Palin's being chosen to be McCain's running mate. But I'm done now. Things have gone too far, in my opinion, and it's distracted us from the real issues at hand. Maybe it's just that it's the weekend, and it's a slow news weekend (it's Labor Day weekend, after all)? Honestly, I doubt it. If there was one piece of brilliance in McCain's choice of picking Palin, it was that the entire attention of media, bloggers, and normal old citizens alike shifted to her, and in many ways, off of him. Certainly off of Obama and Biden. Certainly off of the message they established at the Democratic Convention.

Listen, I get it: Sarah Palin is a completely unqualified, inexperienced, scandal-ridden, pathetic choice of a Vice President. And it's going to come out, and continue. But personally, I think there are more important things to be addressed, or at least we need to be approaching Palin in a different way.

Why aren't there any posts detailing how Palin is just "more of the same"? Certainly it would be nice to see an analysis of her numerous and truly extremist political positions. But we don't get that. Instead, we're given post after post about fucking "Waterbreakgate". Why? How is that truly relevant? "Judgment," I hear. Fine. Palin is not running for President. She's running for VP, and most people simply don't give that much of a shit for the person running bottom of the ticket. If McCain took a plane ride after leaking amniotic fluid, maybe it would be worth discussing at such ludicrous length.

I'm done with all that. My patience has been tried, and it's failed, and I'm amazed that such a thing has happened after only two days following her announcement as McCain's running mate. Wow. I usually have more patience than that.

And why must there be post after post about how Palin's a "game-changer"? If the Democrats play it right (and I have no doubt that they will), she changes nothing in the end. She offers more of same policies, on a more extreme level than even McCain. Her ideology is so extreme, it even conflicts with McCain in a number of ways. But no, I don't see posts about that. Rather, I see posts about a supposed conspiracy that her eldest daughter is actually her youngest's son's mother. What. The. Fuck? I get it, some people wonder, their minds wander and they question these things. But while we're at it, why not just revive Zeigeist: The Movie as a legitimate point of discussion?

I'm gonna take a break from TPM for a while. Devote some more time to my film reviews. Hopefully when I get back, Palin hysteria will have subsided and people will have realized her for the joke she is and be attacking McCain again, and his message, and his theme, and his policies. And while I'm at it, I'll be sending a few prayers (or hopes, or well-wishes) to the people of New Orleans and the Guld Coast. And they certainly don't deserve McCain's political exploitation. Shame on him if he really does it.

Oh, and sorry, people, I won't be replying to this topic. ...If it even garners that much interest (which, given the climate, seems doubtful). But feel free to comment your hearts out.

My head is aching. I need some aspirin.

This is funny: it's such a completely narcissistic sentiment.

Exactly! I like Nathan's shit usually. But I really do not get the whole, "I'm leaving!" schtick. Just how important do these people think they are?

No need to voice it, do it!

avatar

well dude, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen

good advice

for you AND sarah palin

as for the rest of us, we're quite happy to spend the week of the repuglitard convention helping the repuglitards dig their own grave

I couldn't think of anything better to talk about this week than how INCOMPETENT john mcsame is, AND how hypocritical and morally bankrupt sarah palin are, during this week that repuglitards are supposed to be trying to win over undecided voters

maybe you don't unnerstan this whole "politics" thingy to begin with, so maybe you SHOULD stay away

those of us who are politcally aware are gonna enjoy ourselvers

Use the buttons on blog posts dude. As for escaping the Plain panic, I sympathize.

make that Palin panic

Love the anagram though!

God speed, Nathan... movie reviewing is more fun anyway. ;-)

Hurry back.

The amniotic fluid trolls have arrived, Nathan. They are disgusting and obnoxious and disruptive, but people will eventually tire of them and start reporting them to TPM management. They'll probably be gone when you come back. Have a good break.

Hey, did you see Vickie Christina Barcelona? I saw it with my daughter this weekend; it was just what the doctor ordered.

BTW, We all have to take breaks from time to time; I certainly have. I will miss you though; you strike me as a very empathic person, and someone I'd actually like to get to know.

Take a nice vacation; maybe we can have a weekly movie review thread -- it would be a nice break from this crap that we are all sick of. It has gotten so repetitive and petty, although I fully admit to being a part of those negative characteristics.

Come back soon!

Once the shine wears off it will hit people that the economy is still in shambles, we are going through 2 wars, and we are depending on foreign oil. Palin can only aide on 1 of the 3 subjects.

Nathan, you can't let a little thing like Palinmania throw you offstride.
Don't you see that was the whole purpose of McCain's VP pick?
Now the pressure on the rest of us to comment will increase, and some of us will crack.
They'll wear us down one by one, till Michelle Bociurkiw, testing and Readytoblowagasket are the last ones standing.
Then the terrorists -- and by that I mean the Republicans -- will have won.
If I haven't persuaded you, have a nice vacation.

Certainly it would be nice to see an analysis of her numerous and truly extremist political positions.
Yes, her numerous positions on the vast myriad of international and national domestic public policy conundrums, which have been widely disseminated and publicized... uh, Where as that again?

I am having a similar malaise over the 'distraction' that this is. Clearly our leaders are not focusing their energy on her. I want to get back to a more forward thinking place. Getting out the vote. Al Sharpton pointed out last week that we should encourage people to veryify that their voter registrations are valid and up to date. Apparently in the last election in Ohio many voters who thought that they were still on the roles had been purged.

I would rather imagine a world where Obama and Biden are leading our country and starting to put things right than give my attention to the stupidity of the Repuplicans. I am not saying that I want to turn my back but I think I will watch how Obama and Biden handle things and follow their lead on the subject of Palin. In their recent ad they basically ignored her and stayed focused on McCain.

I'm just having malaise, with a side of a crisis of confidence. ;-)

But seriously - TPM was my last political RSS feed, and I unsubscribed from that today. Like a train wreck, I couldn't look away, and so here I am. But in a few days, I'll be truly done with politics this cycle. I'm tired of being outraged.

And I've found that as I disengaged, I actually have more time for other pursuits. Photography. Learning to play piano.

And so it goes.

Hi ho.

Enjoy some fresh air, Chrono, but don't be gone too long. Your voice of reason matters here. And thanks for all you've contributed so far.

Ditto.

Agreed... we miss you already Chrono

but I did hear Tropic Thunder was worth a second look as it continues to rule the box office.

Chrono, It will be interesting to see if you can do it. I tried and it lasted, oh about an hour...This place is such a train wreck, it's hard not to look.

Anyway, I'm hoping you at least read the posts, even if you don't answer. Would hate for you to not know that I will miss you. I always look forward to your posts and will miss your input.

LOL! Exactly!

I'm gonna dissent. I have actually been away from TPM and the "intarwebs" for most of the summer, and this Palin pick brought me right back into the thick cause its so damn fun and interesting.

Muckraking is FUN. Its research, inquiry, and investigation. Its the very essence of journalism.

I have been clued to my monitor since McCain announced his pick and in a way, this is part of the whole political process. It fired me up. I find it segues quite nicely with the Democratic National Convention.

Take a break Nathan. Have fun and relax. Pass the baton to us denizens of filth, hehehehe.

Come back, soon!!!

We will miss you, we who read your posts regularly, even if we did not comment. Have a nice break. ;-)

The Category 2 cyclone of the GOP-VP pick hit the coast of Blogistan while its denizens were napping or going about their usual occupations.

The initial surge of derision overwhelmed the levees and soon cordons of pajama clad Blogistanis were passing sand bags in human chains to staunch the flow.

In some neighborhoods, civility broke down entirely. Shooting and cursing became common. Trolls looted abandoned issues. The football stadium filled with the hungry homeless who chewed on convention confetti and RSS feeds.

But wait,,I hear swamp boats coming across the lake. Rescue is on the way. I can make out John and Sarah waving the American flag and Energy bars. With a huge sigh of relief, I lower my AR-15 and return to working the sump pump.

Good stuff, this.

I would also like to know why I continue to see comparisons of Palin vs Obama and Palin vs Biden.

Obama isnt running against Palin, John McCain is.
Something like this will cause people to focus on Palin continually, instead of staying on John McCain. He picked her.

Send him the flack, not her.
This goes against his judgement, and her judgment. Part of leadership is knowing where you stand. If Obama came and asked me to be Vice President, I would immediately turn it down, because I am not qualified.

People say they shouldnt blame her, but I say why not? Where I work we have had a # of individuals rise into the ranks, into positions that they are unqualified for and it usually causes there first project to go down in fire, and the company losing 3 - 10 million dollars, depending on when someone finally realized they didnt know wth they were doing running a project.

She's not "more of the same" - she is worse, a right wing thumper extremist adored by Rush and Dobson and their ilk. But I'm glad he chose her. It makes the case for Obama that much easier to make.

According to a rumor I just invented, Palin is changing her name to Air Head.

We'll miss you around here Nathan. Your's is one of the voices that keeps this place a bit saner. Take your time, and clear your head if you have to. Go outside, it helps.

Hope you're able to make it back soon.

Why are Republicans trying to destroy the bedrock family values of America? They clearly do not have the morals to lead the country.

Yet they have the hypocrisy to attack and support laws about how others should lead their own private lives.

Hi Nathan: I totally understand your need for a break. I've taken one for the past month and it helps clear the head. I've always thought that Democrats are cursed with the plague of caring too much. Republicans just don't care that much and Independents think we're all nuts. This has been an exceptional election cycle. McCain brought Palin into the mix to shake up the reproductive rights and gender i.d. issues, with the hope to divide. I don't think it will work. In the meantime, enjoy your break. In the words of Thoreau, "Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something."

28 recs...

Christ.

When I learned that McCain had named Palin on Friday, as soon as I found out more about her I became very depressed at the huge insult that McCain had given us all: Hillary Clinton as a woman, Obama by "comparing" her experience to his, and the country for suggesting that someone with so little knowledge of national issues could be president. Then, the insult was furthered by the news media who took it seriously: by George Will who talked about how she "walks the walk" because she has a Downs Syndrome child, and the rest of the talking heads by talking about what a fresh face and "maverick" she is. I find all this way more insulting than any scrutiny that this woman is receiving. How many lives would be adversely affected if this woman became President?

avatar

Amniotic fluid trolls? Please.

"If McCain took a plane ride after leaking amniotic fluid, maybe it would be worth discussing at such ludicrous length." Essentially McCain did take that ride, as he has selected her to fill in for him should he die or be indisposed. She's just as important to talk about "at length" as he is? What is your objection to discussing her behavior at length? Because you personally find it boring?

She seems, if we accept her version of events, to have behaved with depraved indifference on the day of her baby's birth. No woman in her condition should have attempted to board a long flight, or really a flight of any length. That's the very kindest conclusion one can draw. The reason people are going on "at length" is because their interest in the answers to questions about her behavior and personality are being met on the other side with a stone wall of silence. But by all means, blame the pischers, while the folks in power walk off scot free, controlling the media discourse to the point where her actions are though of as entirely unremarkable.

Why aren't there any posts detailing how Palin is just "more of the same" ?

Idunno

maybe cuz some people write the "why aren't there any (fill in the blank)" posts instead of writing the post they wanna read ???
