Democrats Get Big Gift for Denver; New York Republican Donates $1 Million
Danny Hakim, New York Times August 19:
Tom Golisano, the Rochester billionaire and registered Republican, donated $1 million on Friday to the host committee of the Democratic Party’s convention in Denver, making him one of the largest donors to the planning efforts surrounding the expected coronation of Barack Obama as the party’s nominee next week.
The donation comes as Mr. Golisano, a three-time candidate for governor, has been using his wallet to re-emerge as a heavyweight in state politics, and worrying Republicans that he is leaning to the left in his latest political incarnation....Mr. Golisano, who always ran on the Independence Party line and never got more than 15 percent of the vote, also has not ruled out another political run of his own, saying at a press conference last month that he thought “every day” about running for governor again....

Another Republican turned Democrat.
We've got to come up with a good nickname for these guys along the lines of "log cabin" Republican.
I suggest "Smart Republicans." LOL

Can't be Log Cabin Republicans, because that is the name given to the Republicans who are homosexuals. talk about a no-win position to be in, support a party that despises you.

How about "Enlightened Republicans"?
Or maybe, "Woke Up in the Middle of the Night Sweating and Realizing How Morally Bankrupt the Right Is Republicans"?
Maybe the second one is a little too long.

B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences
Golisano Children's Hospital
Golisano Institute for Sustainability
Name recognition being the end-all and be-all, I wonder how the recipients of Tom's largess managed to avoid naming it the Golisano National Democratic Convention.

Yes. Brings to mind...I am told by the spouse that the main money made these days in pro-sports is coming from premium skyboxes and similar season tickets, which have risen to astronomical levels; still it is hard to believe that Mr. Golisano will be satisfied with this:
Oh for the days when a $25K for a table of rubber chicken dinner tickets got you some bang for your buck?
More seriously, though I haven't read that deeply about him, he has always piqued my interest simply because he has always seemed obssessed with challenging party lines. In the past there was definitely more than a whiff of Ross Perot delusions of CEO grandeur there, ala "can't you dummies see how simple it would be to fix this mess, cut the damn red tape and political bickering..." This move is against his own previously created stereotype.
