Hillary checked the Box – but didn’t go outside it.

OK, she passed my test, she was a Democrat, she wasn’t a victim. It was a pro forma endorsement that exceeded the low expectations of the McMedia and the nightmare scenarios of the left.

She didn’t give Obama a character reference that would have been important to some of her more Appalachian supporters. And she did not seriously undermine McCain’s character, which is Job Number One for surrogates at this point.

Even her most apparent plea to her supporters – "Were you just in this for me?" – could be seen as a backhanded slap at Obama supporters and could back up McCains claim that they are a celebrity cult. How long before we see the McCain ad asking "Are Obama supporters just in it for Him? If you are in it for the Country then vote McCain."

So now we will see what happens in the roll call.  And then will Bill go outside of the box and attack McCain directly?  If he does and follows it up on the trail with Hillary then it will be a net positive. If not then it will be a long hard slog but turnout will trump Republican politics of insecurity and division.

As for her supporters, the vocal holdouts are just Republican trolls whether they know it or not.

Well, I hope you realize that you have now placed yourself in a very small minority of Democrats. What we saw last night was a remarkable speech by a remarkable women.

I wonder if it ever occurs to the reader/commentators here at TPMCafe that you've managed to turn off thousands of potential Obama supporters, and you are still doing it. Do you not understand that without most of Hillary's voters, and there were eighteen million of them, Obama will not win in October.

I'm not one of them. I voted for Obama on super Tuesday, but I lived to have second thoughts, and nothing alienated me more from the Obama campaign than what happened here, partly egged on by Josh at the the flagship site, TPM, i.e., the constant, unreasoning attack on both Clintons.

Now you claim that her emphasis that her supporters turn their attention away from their support for her and toward the issues and the people that support was always meant to truly be about, is actually a backhanded slap at Obama? Well, that must mean that the Obamas and his campaign have a real disagreement with you, because they seemed genuinely pleased and moved - his entire campaign did, and certainly his supporters in the convention center were. What? Are they all liars? Or just not as smart as you are?

Are you people, I've read two negative reviews of Hillary's speech so far, and none genuinely praising her, out of your mind? The anti-Clinton contingent here are the true outliers, the true dead enders.

I guess you didn't notice the near unanimous acclaim inside the convention hall - the ecstasy, on the part of Obama supporters. I guess you didn't hear Michelle Obama talk about the extraordinary graciousness Hillary extended on Tuesday, before the speech.

In this post you have shown yourself to be incapable of leaving behind your own prejudices, and your own fuzzy understanding of the political dynamics of the nineties.

You really think it's good for Obama to have you fan these flames? Or are going to tell me that "truth" is more important than supporting a candidate? Bullshit! You are the mirror image of the PUMAS.

Go back and read the speech again. I take it you can read. Hard to tell from an argument as slipshod and shoddy as the one you posted here. The only motivating force one feels behind your effort is an almost pathological need to despise the Clintons. Your reference to the pro-McCain press is especially amusing, in an unfunny way. Most of your attacks on the Clintons are derived from the years of smears carried on by the SCLM. The fact that McCain could make a commercial distorting Hillary's words proves nothing about the speech, and everything about how all Republicans conduct their campaigns, even so-called maverick ones.

Don't worry, Ron Fournier found a way to tilt the coverage back against the Clintons, the same way he managed to tilt Obama's choice of Biden against Obama, by using Republican talking points. The shame of it is that I'm sure you were outraged in the latter instance, but won't be in the former.

As I said, I voted for Obama. I haven't yet contributed or volunteered for him. After last night I was ready to. But after reading the never ending putrid hostility to the Clintons of which your post is only one fine example, based on years of lies and smears by Republicans, echoed in the SCLM, the same forces which slimed Al Gore through-out the 2000 campaign, and then stole the election from him, I think I'll just put my time, energy and money in the service of issue activism, probably universal health care. Obama will get my vote, but though I was ready to give him my heart, I think you've managed to change my mind.

Just to make my position absolutely clear, not only am I not a PUMA supporter, I loathe them. My problem is that too many of you Obama supporters are just like them, incapable of building alliances, insensible to true liberal values, and just so fucking full of yourself. True activists and true liberals, and yes, although I often bow to the new old word, progressive, I am an unrepentent, unabridged, unbowed, unapologetic old-fashioned liberal, are not about creating schisms, are not about constant outward-aimed critique, with never a a critical look at one's self.
