One of the reasons I watch parts of these, both now and in the past, is to see up and coming politicians; see who has the ability to exite, who can deliver with passion, and see who displays some utter likeability. Well, folks - Schweitzer is certainly that guy tonight, just like Obama was four years ago. (Now Clinton was a snoozer at the convention, but made up for it on the trail).
For those of you who haven't seen it, here is the link to Schweitzer's speech:

Thanks for the link! You're right, he is that guy.

Thanks for the link! I missed this one. He is really good.

I had looked at some of his speeches on YouTube when someone said he might be a VP, and realized that he's a pistol and his speeches are crowd-pleasers. Very effective speechifying!

I am really f'ing pissed!!!! Schweitzer gave a GREAT speech and the only place it could be seen was C-SPAN. All the networks, including PBS, had their talking heads on instead of letting the American people take in the full message of the Democratic convention. Bad job by the networks...America was deprived of hearing a great speech by a rising star in the Democratic party.
Thanks for the link AlaskaSense...

I watched Schweitzers speech on CNN. They tuned into him while he was giving a cheer at the begining and then showed all the rest.
He was one of my favs for VP, but I know someone more familiar is a better way to go. He's a rising star, I hope to see him in a national role someday.

They did have him on CNN? That was the one place I didn't check. Cool at least one network carried that great speech.
I checked PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC and all I got was TV talking heads...that is when I just gave up and tuned in to C-SPAN.

I know, I just got lucky because I didn't have the schedule. I tuned to CNN to see if they were grousing over not hearing enough attacks (which MSNBC was) and they were just mentioning Schweitzer and they said "should we go to him?". They actually payed attention to their surroundings and noted something newsworthy that they didn't create. I clicked back a few minutes later to MSNBC and they were still navel gazing and punditing. I should probably just watch C-Span.

He had some of the best attack lines on McCain so far from the convention. The one about drilling for oil in all of McCain's backyards and still not finding any was a classic!!!
This was supposed to be 'attack John McCain night' and when that finally did occur in earnest, with Schweitzer's great speech, only C-SPAN and CNN viewers got to see it...that is a shame. :(

I watched the MSNBC coverage on my laptop using desktop speakers. It was wall to wall coverage with no talking heads.
After Warner, Schweitzer was Obama's Plan B. But Clinton clung on and laid out her markers for the future. The quid pro quo was Biden.

I thought he was great. Finally someone went on the attack full-throated! Deval Patrick, governor of Massachusetts, got in some good jabs just before Schweitzer as well.
If MSNBC really wants to be the cable news network of choice for Democrats, the anti-Fox News, and it seems it might now that it has finally given Rachel Maddow a show, it should be showing the actual speeches instead of letting Pat Buchanan bloviate and give the Dems terrible advice.
CSPAN showed all of the speakers, but it didn't seem to have the Clinton video, which was annoying because the Kennedy video I thought was one of the highlights of last night.

On the other hand, I thought Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas was a little disappointing. She stepped on one of her attack lines and didn't seem to have a lot of energy in her delivery.
I don't see how she could have pulled off VP. I can see why the Hillary people would have been upset if they had picked her.
August 27, 2008 9:35 AM | Reply | Permalink
He did, and the funny thing is that MSNBC was over there complaining they haven't heard enough attacks at the same time Schweitzer was whipping up the crowd and beating on McCain.

Biden's probably the better choice for the times - but I really liked Schweitzer for VP too. He's very highly regarded here in the NW - and his state is romping circles around it's GOPtarded neighbors(sigh).

Incorrect - CNN actually cut away from their windbags long enough to televise Schweitzer's speech in its entirety.

LOL! That was great. He reminds me of an uncle of mine who always manages to work the crowd when he gets a few beers in him. it was definitely a travesty that he cable news networks skipped over this speech because he really worked up the audience in preparation for Hillary, and he got no glory whatsoever.

Actually, I think there was a moment when the camera cut away to Bill Clinton, and you could see (but not hear) him saying, "He's good!"
August 27, 2008 12:42 AM | Reply | Permalink
There was indeed that moment, and Biden was beaming too.
August 27, 2008 1:12 AM | Reply | Permalink
As was Michelle Obama. At the very end, both of them turned to someone next to them and mouthed something that looked like "He's good."

Wow. I mean, wow. I know many of you had been talking Schweitzer up, and he seemed like he was good. But after watching that speech...
Folksy, animated, as much an energy wonk as Bill C. was an economics one. And he clearly loves being up there talking to people. Maybe Biden is the right choice. But man, Obama/Schweitzer would have been one hell of a campaign to watch and work for.

We're going to be hearing more about this guy. At least, that's what I hope. He's awesome.

CNN camera cut to Bill Clinton repeatedly during Schweitzer's speech, because he was so clearly enjoying it throughout. He really came to life during that speech, in contrast with camera time up to that point.

That guy knows how to work a huge room and make it feel like a small one which is not an easy task by any means! I hope we get to see more of him in the future as well.

Columnist David Sirota has been beating the drum for Schweitzer for months. That might have been discounted since Sirota used to work for Schweitzer but the speech really put the Montana Gov. on the radar.
Schweitzer has a larger than life presence in the spotlight and, obviously, loves connecting with audiences. Lookout for Schweitzer.
I'd hoped that the Obama campaign would have developed a single McCain catchphrase that would be repeated throughout the convention. Something like Hillary's "No way. No how. No McCain." So far it looks like every speechwriter wanted to try something different.

Schweitzer for POTUS in 2016!!

That would be amazing. I'm down all the way.

I am a very odd duck. Schweitzer's performance was a bit clownish for my taste. I connected much more with the cerebral style of Mark Warner.
August 27, 2008 12:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
He could have canned the "crucifix" comment. What was THAT about? I thought he was very entertaining and gave a rousing speech. He did not seem very deep to me, but was a good cheerleader.
He's definitely someone it would be fun to have a beer with, but that is not my criterion for the 2012 POTUS, like someone suggested upthread.

Schweitzer was weird-- in a good way. With all the over-the-top hand gestures and voice inflections, at first glance he seemed like the parody of a bad politician in a Frank Capra film, or Sideshow Bob in that "Simpsons" episode. But Schweitzer had never run for office before running for governor of Montana. So it was just refreshingly different. Clearly, he was being tongue-in-cheek about it all and having a good time. I found myself getting caught up in his animated style-- and the crowd was loving it too. He fired them up for Hillary's speech. Not that she needed it.

He receives, "Best in Convention speeches" so far. It was a wonderful introduction to the country and the nation. I bet his speech will be one of the most memorable in years to come.

Hey, wait, did you miss Kucinich's speech? It was awesome. I'd love to have him reprise that in prime time so more people would get a chance to see him fire up a crowd.
August 27, 2008 5:46 PM | Reply | Permalink
Agree. Kucinich's speech was the best so far and will probably stay that way until the Big Dog and Biden and Barack get up there.

Thanks for the link - I was watching MSNBC cause that was the closest broadcast to where the TV was when I turned it on. ( Why do I need 42 Spanish language channels and 164 religious channels just cause I wanted HBO?) They didn't let us see and hear Schweitzer's speech. I'm glad I didn't miss it. That was one of the best political rousers I've heard since I heard Jim Mattox burn the house down at a district convention in 1984.

Should have been the keynote speaker, he crapped all over Warner's speech.
August 27, 2008 6:24 PM | Reply | Permalink
Except that Warner delivered one of my favorite lines from the convention so far: Imagine having a government that believes in science.
That one went straight to my heart.
August 27, 2008 7:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
Warner lost me with his "I invented the cell phone" story. Imagine a government that believes in science? Yeah, I'm imagining Finland right now.

What's so bad about Finland? Yeah, it gets pretty cold there in the winter, but otherwise, they seem to be OK.

Greetings from Big Sky Country!
Don't let his "folksy ways" fool you. He's a very savvy politician. The Republican party in Montana is in shambles, in large part because of him, and his refusal to run a campaign tied to the conventional dem playbook, showing dems here how to really get it done.
(For an example of the MT Republicans see- http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2008/06/05/election/state/mt84.txt)
Schweitzer kicked the door in after Judy Martz, and Democrats are back on the march here. State legislators are coming in with D's after their name, and THAT'S where the 50 state strategy is paying off, leaders for tomorrow. Without Schweitzers lead, I doubt John Tester would have had his opening to run and win against Conrad Burns. Montana national office Dems are providing an umbrella for the state Dems to run and win.
Keep an eye on Schweitzer and Tester. A west wind is blowing.
