Branding McCain a "Big Oil Cowboy"

Branding McCain a "Big Oil Cowboy"

In the news today was John McCain's attack on Obama, charging him with wanting to lose in Iraq because of his "ambition".

There have been many commenters who responded by urging Obama to hit back.  I think he does need to hit McCain, but not necessarily hit back.

Obama should not let McCain dictate his message by responding to McCain's accusations du jour.  He needs to hit McCain where he's vulnerable, over and over again from the same angle.

Josh Marshall seems to agree.  In one of his posts today he said, "The lack of any consistent lines of attack against McCain is becoming palpable."

So let me be constructive and suggest the branding of John McCain as a Big Oil Cowboy.

Big Oil is a lever that can open several cans of worms:
    -- Domestic economy (gas prices)
-- National security (foreign oil dependence)
    -- Lobbyist puppet
-- Same as Bush and Cheney

Cowboy, of course, reminds people of his unstable personality:
    -- Gaffe-o-rama
-- Same as Bush and Cheney
    -- Iresponsible spending
    -- Deteriorating memory
    -- Loose-cannon temper

I think Big Oil Cowboy is a punch that can be thrown over and over again.  It's a brand that can stick.

Let's see how this can work.

Greg Sargent on TPM EC posted Obama spokesman Bill Burton's response to McCain's attack:

All his bluster, distortions and negative attacks notwithstanding, it is hard to understand how Senator McCain can at once proclaim his support for the sovereign government of Iraq, and then stubbornly defy their expressed support for a timeline to remove our combat brigades from their country.  The difference in this race is that John McCain is intent on spending $10 billion a month on an open-ended war, while Barack Obama thinks we should bring this war to a responsible end and invest in our pressing needs here at home.

Wow.  Two complex sentences totalling six clauses and 89 words, all jammed into a single paragraph.  Let's rewrite that keeping our branding in mind:

John McCain is singing his same old song.  Stay in Iraq and spend, spend, spend.  Spend the lives of our precious children.  Spend your hard-earned dollars on Big Oil and Blackwater.

Now their government wants a timeline for withdrawal.  John McCain disagrees.  He says they're just confused.

But McCain can't remember the difference between Sunnis and Shiites.  He confuses Iraqi extremists with Al Qaeda.  He can't tell you who the enemy is.

We think it's John McCain who's confused.  We can't afford another cowboy in the White House.

I'm not Barack Obama, but I approve this message anyway.

Not counting the tag line, that's 12 simple sentences totalling four paragraphs and 88 words.

KISS!  Keep It Simple, Stupid!

I prefer Big Oil Whore. But Cowboy is good too.

Heh.  That more accurately describes how I feel, too.  If I got even more accurate, they'd kick me off the site :-)

Cowboy is printable. And it really does have connotations of our Current Occupant.

I prefer Cheater or Little Sneak.

McCheat.

McSneak.

Something like that. Like?

It would be beyond stupid to brandish "Cowboy" as an anti-McCain insult. "Cowboy diplomacy" is a fair attack of Bush and McCain, because "cowboy" describes a style, an attitude. Branding McCain as a Cowboy is very different. Americans bought 36 million country music CDs in 2006, and 77 million adults listen to country radio every week. Cowboys are popular American icons, and very popular in Colorado, New Mexico, Florida...

Not to mention the fact that McCain really ISN'T, you know, a "Big Oil Cowboy" Bush is. Cheney is. McCain just isn't, and Obama isn't the sorta politician to push lies.

But I agree Obama should pick a portrait of McCain and stick with it, hammer it home until everyone's sick of hearing it. What's wrong with hot-headed, flip-flopper who (despite his POW experience) has no principles and will say or do anything to satisfy his lust for power?

Good point about Cowboy.  But you do understand the phrase cowboy dipolmacy  The cowboy element certainly gets its traction from somewhere.  It does imply a kind of shoot-from-the-hip cavalier attitude.

Still, if it's gonna piss off too much of the electorate in swing states, I'd agree a different term might be a better choice.

Not to mention the fact that McCain really ISN'T, you know, a "Big Oil Cowboy"

I think you can make an easy case that he is Big Oil.  True, not to the degree that Dubya and Cheney are.  But his flip-floppery on off-shore drilling coincidental with big contributions from Big Oil is good supporting evidence.  And his defense of Big Oil tax breaks.

(It will be interesting to see what comes of the Gang of Ten oil-drilling compromise percolating through the House.  I've heard that Nancy Pelosi wants to exclude California and Florida from drilling.  I don't like that.  It gives McCain an excuse to vote against it.  And it's not like FL or CA is in danger.  The bill gives states veto power over their own coasts, and the legislatures in those states will not knuckle under.)

What's wrong with hot-headed, flip-flopper who... has no principles and will say or do anything to satisfy his lust for power?

Sounds great.  Now if you could distill that into a catchy phrase...

Hmmm... Hip Shooter McCain?

Excellent TPM Cafe post by Gary Paul Corcoran about last Saturday's Saddleback Church debate.

Here's an excerpt from the first sentence of the second paragraph.  Gary is commenting on John McCain's performance:

... we've been listening to this same cocksure cowboy bluster about Iraq and foreign policy for the past eight years...

I'm sure we all know what he means, even the cowboys among us.

I would go for a more Obama style response that makes what John McCain said look flat out idiotic.

I still like:

Hothead Mccain

Cheater MCcain

Hothead is good.  Similar connotations to Cowboy.

Cheater is accurate, but without much traction.  As outraged as that aspect may make some of us, it's a ways down there when you list attributes that affect performance in office.

How about "Uncle Sidney"?

Sidney is McCain's middle name, after all. It sounds weaker than the hard "A" sound in McCain.

And who's uncle would he be? Why, uncle to the children of Cindy Lou's forgotten half-sister, of course. The sister who was denied any inheritance or even acknowledgment of her existence.

Uncle Sidney. Make Uncle Same-style posters, with McCain pointing at you. "Uncle Sidney Wants You! (to fight more wars while your family goes broke)"

Happy to provide an opportuinty for you to vent, Mr. Ripper.  A lot of us share your sentiments and are glad to hear you articulate them.

Of course, any label that requires that much explaining ain't gonna do it.

BTW, I just read that MoveOn.org is running an ad in NC branding both McSame and senatorial candidate Elizabeth Dole as being in the pocket of Big Oil.  So while cowboy may be problematic, at least others also think that Big Oil is a useful stick.

How about Big Oil Buckle Bunny?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckle_bunny

Father Guido Sarducci writes:

How about Big Oil Buckle Bunny?

Nah.  It's a put-down of cowboys without the trigger-happy connotations.  It keeps the problematic part while losing the sharp needle.

And, of course, if you need a Wikipedia citation to explain it, it's not gonna fly.
